I remember back in the "Good ole days" sitting around the computer laughing as my brother's nuke bounced off my Deflector shield and blasted my older sister and mother into oblivion, then cringe as my stepfather took me and my lil sis out with a Funkybomb.

Oh the times...

I used to play a version of this game called Tank Wars. It had a bit better graphics since it wasn't the original but it was one of my first games that I had found on my grandmother's old computer.

Well, I got ahold of the author. He gives out the game now. BTW I have a copy of it somewhere in my old floppy disc collection. I seem so old:(

If anyone doubts that this is best game on PC, invite 5-6 friends and play all at the same time (I would tell you to do that in the evening with some snack and drinks, but I don't wanna give bad example) :sneaky:

I used to invite my friends over, then I'd purchase nothing but the Funky Bomb. Everyone got blown up at once, including me.

Massive fun.

I second that... nothing beats the original Scorch.

And a hint for the addicts (though I bet they'll know it already): when your opponent uses force shields (the pink ones), shoot under such angle that your projectile bounces onto the shield 3 times.
A personal favourite of mine is the laser, if you can get close enough :D

Just a guess: maybe it's a folder name older DOS programs can't handle (too long, containing spaces,...)?

If the game does not run on your computer, you maybe should use a DOS-Emu.

I use this one: DosBox 0.63 (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net)
And it works quite well with all DosGames ;)

I looked in the folder and there is no PIf files at all. What goes on there?

I will try moving it, maybe that will work, i'm soo frustrated!

About the PIF-thing... Have you tried running a cmd window, and then tried to start the game?
This method works for me.

Of course, it might run quite as well using Dosbox, but why bother if it isn't necessary in the first place?

I got the same problem but sussed it out. It works beautifully on XP:

Create a folder on your C: drive called Scorch

Open and extract ALL files to C:\Scorch

Go to command prompt from

If you put all the files into a folder called Scorch on C: drive then go to command prompt (ie Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt)

Get onto C: drive (ie cd.. cd.. etc)

Get into Scorch directory (ie cd Scorch)

Then type scorch

Worked for me!!!

Your file system is now NTFS... thats why your autoexec file is.NT. Older systems used FAT32 file structure. If you have a FAT32 partition on your HD, install it there and trying executing the file through your command prompt.

Cyborg is the hardest.
They are listed in order from easy to hard, except for 1 type that stands for a random pick. I think that's tosser. In that case the computer randomly chooses a type.

Happy to see Scorch.exe back again! I bought a shareware disk from the computer store in the early 1990's and used to spend hours in front of my computer playing the game. I ran MS-DOS with Windows 3.1 added at some point in time.

When I found this forum and a chance to download Scorched Earth, I jumped at the chance! I spent the whole night and half the next day tinkering and tweaking both the game settings and the Windows Me shortcut. This game requires standard MS-DOS, and that is not supported by this version of Windows, it kept telling me, but I got it figured out and working on this "painfully slow" 1 GHz computer! I had to adjust settings in the game as if the computer was only a 10 MHz 386 or so it seems.

I like the big explosions. A Plasma blast with ten batteries being discharged will grow to 2/3 the size of the screen, a big red ball that turns black and then red again for maybe 5 minutes, as it grows and grows. You can just imagine the radiation and the damage it is causing surrounding tanks.

Don't be surprised if a tank blows up and takes you with it.

I plan to try to install the game on my friend's XP computer. Not sure what I will come up with there, but I have seen some posts that give a glimpse of the possible problems.

Cheers!

DOSBox has really made the game run like a champ for the most part on both my Windows ME and my friend's Windows XP Home edition.

Thanks for the tip!

Without any modifications to the DOSBox configuration, I had a broken sound problem on both computers, but I have that figured out. I set frameskip=3 in the [render] section of the configfile. That solved the entire sound issue for me.

Neat thing about DOSBox, I can run Scorched Earth in the 320x200 or 320x240 resolution and really get a good large view of the graphics and print.

I don't get those big round explosions with a bright center and darker outsides as with the higher resolutions, but instead I get the much more colorful explosions!

I have an icon on my desktop that runs Scorched Earth in DOSBox and when I exit the program I close DOSBox along with it. Had to add commands to the autoexec portion of the configfile to achieve this goal because I can't thus far get it to accept commands from the Windows command line to load with a selected configfile.

Neat, too: I can play music in Winamp while listening to bombs bursting in air in Scorched Earth! Ever try that on a dos box before?? :)

Have you got enough numbers of players?

All you need in this game is some big missiles - You can take out any amount of opponents with just this. The rest is just for fun and trying to take out more than one guy at a time...Well thats what I think. :tomato:

Instant BBQ:

When an opponent is using a force-shield (the thin pink/magenta one), switch to Napalm or Hot Napalm, crank your power up to the max, then engage Verical Guidance and disengage contact triggers (important)... Aim over the opponent, then shoot. When it asks to choose your target, click the center of the opponent's tank. Your Napalm charge will penetrate right through the shield of your opponent and fill his shield up with some nice hot napalm death. This might work on regular shields and mag deflectors too, but doesn't work on heavy shields or heavy force shields.

This is a very effective tactic, and always works if done as described.

Jake is right...I played this game in college and I graduated in 1994, so I would say 91 or 92 maybe.

I don't understand why you all are having trouble running these games. I just extract the ZIP file and make a shortcut to the executable. I keep all the shortcuts in another folder (Abandonware). All these old games work fine on my computer (AMD Sempron 3500 2GHz, Win XP).

The only game I can't get to work is Duke Nukem 3D. It is designed for use with a SoundBlaster or other card. YOu have to manuallly configure the sound settings and I can't figure out which settings to select for my onboard Compaq sound.

But getting back to Scorch, it rules.

Read the interview (link in previous post).
It says: version 1.1 was 1991, 1.2 - 1992 and this version 1.5 - 1995.

I don't like to think of how many hours I spent playing the Amiga version of this!

For all the ones who want the full version I must tell you that it is exectly the same as the shareware version, since you can still get the 7th tank that shoots three shells at once.
It's a bug in the game and it is quite easy to discover. Since the computer can still use the 7th tank in the shareware you can give a computer controled player that tank. If you change it to player controled than you will then be able to use the 7th tank. Hope this post helps. ^_^

Hello everybody!

Been searching for some old games and found this site. Funkin Awesome I must say!! (just downloaded Castles II...sweet).

Well for the info of any Scorched Earth fans I am the very proud owner of an orginal copy. Original packaging and all. I think I only bought it at the time because I liked it soooo much. $20 back then as well. It came with a 3.5 inch disk as well as a 5.25 inch disk.

Last time I tried to play it (5 or more years ago) it was unplayable because the processor ran too fast for the gameplay (I think...). When it was your go and you moved the cannon turrett left or right it would wizz around really fast like a wheel of fortune spin in fast forward. Also; the computer's turn would pass in the blink of an eye. Oh well...

But if anyone wants a copy for any reason email me - *MAIL REMOVED*

Party on...

Great old school game...

And if you didn't know: you can make it even better by editing or writing your own :max: comments. Open TALK1.CFG and TALK2.CFG with Notepad and edit them. And don't forget to turn them on in the game.

I noticed that with this game if you are browsing the site in German there is an ESA no go logo, however when browsing in English it is downloadable. I dont know if this is the case for a lot of the games, but if it is the case it might keep a lot of first time visitors from the German speaking realm from coming back to the site.

Very good game!!! very addictive too

A weak point i found are the computer players, after looking at them for a while it's easy to figure out their shots, and even some of them always shots off the screen, and never change their aim . Against the computer, using the super mag shield (the orange one, the most expensive) you are almost invencible, i have played 50 or so round with that and never lost, the computer is too stupid to use a napalm instead of a baby missile.

But very good game, many options to try out, weapons and tactics. One of my favorite downloads.

And one last "strange" point: when i run it on DOSBOX, it beaves badly and even crashes sometimes, not good to play. But if i run on plain windows 98 SE, it runs perfectly :omg:
Quite unusual.

never happened to me o_O, increased your cycles?

I have not checked that. Simply leave it at 5000, my default that works well for most games. But the problem don't seem to be the speed, as it does not respond sometimes and simply crashes, grable the screen or somewhat similar.

Anyway, I don't care by this by now, win98se runs it with no problems at all. Maybe in the future when i decide to degrade to winXP i will worry on this.

My friend and I had long sessions playing this game over and over. We were about the same skill, so it was really a toss up who'd win the next round. Good times!

Some people prefer Worms, or Scorched Earth 3D. Good for them. They can play those games, and I'll stick with this good 'ol version. For its day, Scorched Earth really did shine, and upped the ante by which other cannon style games would work. So, games like Worms owe their life to Scorched Earth, much like the son does his father.

For me Scorched Earth donīt needs Save/Load Options, but maybe it have some kind of bug.

I have an early version, maybe the first one from 1991, played it in 1993-4, and didnīt remember Save/Load options, but I never need it, itīs for funny and relative fast plays, like 3 or 4 plays in a seat at least in that time playing alone. For maybe 10-15 minutes that last a game, I donīt mind the save option.

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j45/Troll69/ScorchedEarth1991.jpg

But also greatest game with friends around back in time, then the game shone!:partytime:

Edit:

I was thinking about the Save greyed button after look at my own screenshot, and I think that the button called "Save Changes" means that if you change the options; like number of players, gravity, landscape, with thunders or not, money for each player, etc...then you can actually save that changes, then when you restart Scorched Earth the changes are loaded and thatīs the reason because the button is grey. Itīs not to save games, is for save the options!.
