I am an Ultima lover... Though Ultima V is not my fav (I prefer U7, U7 Part 2 and U4), it is a really great game!!

There is a free (as in beer) remake of Ultima V, using the Dungeon Siege engine, which is called Ultima Lazarus. One can feel the huge involvement and passion from the developers in this game, one of the best RPGs I've played in years... It requires a legal copy of Dungeon Siege (Mac or Windows) to be used.

Wasn't this game released as freeware a while back?
Shouldn't it be on Abandonia Reloaded?

I believe that was Ultim IV, Quest of the Avatar. If someone at Reloaded is reviewing it, I'm sure it will end up there eventually.

Heh, I remember playing this a kid on my Amiga. I had absolutely no idea what was going on then, I might have to try it again to see if I can understand it now ;)

Seems the reviewer was unaware of Voyager Dragon's MIDI patch for Ultima V (http://reconstruction.voyd.net/index.php?event=project&typeKeyword=upgrades) that was released back in 2001. The PC version of Ultima V, despite having better graphics than the Commodore 64/128 and Apple II releases, always suffered compared to the others due to its lack of nice music. Voyager Dragon's patch makes a huge difference in enjoying the game as it was meant to be.

At the same link, patches for many of the other games in the series can be found, including the amazing 256-color enhanced graphics and music upgrade for Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar.

Not really... Only UDIC (Ultima Dragons Internet Chapter) members are officially allowed to distribute the game freely, and only the MS DOS version... AFAIK, no Ultima is freeware..

Except Ultima IV, V and VI. Or at least I finished the fifth with the character from the fourth, and the sixth with the character of the fifth in the PC versión. You have to put the save data archive on the game folder and use the "Transfer data" option.

You can transfer characters from Ultima IV to V using the transfer character patch at http://aiera.timeimmortal.net/ultima5.php

The hard way probably haves its merits, but if you play the PC version, as I said, you can just copy the party.sav from Ultima IV to Ultima V, run the game and in the menu choose the third option "Transfer from Ultima IV". In the sixth it is also the third one, but it asks you to put it in another folder.

Hello everyone...

I am creating a remake of Ultima V for the TI-89 and TI-92+ calculators. It is about 80% complete. You can find more information at TI Freakware (http://z4.invisionfree.com/TIFreakware/index.php?showforum=71).

I hope a new generation of folks will get to enjoy this game as much as I did on my old Commodore SX-64.

hey, i've been wanting to get into the ultima series a lot lately. I downloaded Ultima 4 and was playing it today, but I don't think I can finish it, I'd need the game manual I think. I was reading through a guide and it said I have to pray at shrines, say certain things to people, help people, I have no clue how to do any of that stuff. I'd like to play and beat Ultima 4, but I would need a very throughall walkthrough I think, it's too damn hard. So I was thinking of skipping it and starting with Ultima 5 as my first game, do you think it's worth buying dungeon seige and starting with the fifth version using lazarus? Or do you think I should try to do the fourth version still? Anyone know any really good walkthroughs that explain everything on Ultima 4?
Thanks in advance.

I would suggest playing the original Ultima 5 game, if you can get it (though I haven't played the Lazarus remake).

Ultima 4 has a very different plot and playing style than many other RPGs... Ultima 5 is more of your typical "kill monsters, solve puzzles, and save the king" plot, but the gameplay in both is very similar. The games have been out forever, a quick web search yields a number of walkthroughs.

The top down, tile based style can't really compete with today's 3D games... but it's still pretty easy to get caught up in the story. U4 and U5 have some of the best plot lines for all time. U5 is about my favorite game ever, in fact. (Certainly the one I've spent the most hours on.)

I remember playing this game back in the day. It was incredibly frustrating though because the game didn't like something in my computer (I can't even remember what platform it was, there were four 5 1/4" disks you had to keep swapping out) and never got very far. I'd run into a room and be trapped by furniture and random crap, or I would somehow end up in the middle of the ocean instead of forest. I loved the concept but couldn't get it to run properly on my system.

:sos: I just aquired this game and started playing again, and I'm having trouble, I don't know if it's a bug or what. I just defeated some squid while in my ship, and now I can't get out of the combat screen. I have the ship, surrounded by water, and it won't let me end the combat without running off the screen. Which I can't do since I can't walk on water. I thought about saving and quitting and re-opening the dosbox again, but it won't let me save while in combat. :wallbash:

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Go here (http://www.abandonia.com/main.php?nav=awlist), type "Ultima VII" as the title and see what it shows. If a game is on Abandonia, the title will link to it. Otherwise, the link will go to Mobygames or Underdogs.

There's one expansion for Ultima VII: The Black Gate called "The Forge of Virtue", and one expansion for Ultima VII Part 2: Serpent Isle called "The Silver Seed".

Ultima VII Part 2:Serpent Isle is a standalone game, though the title may confuse some people...

This is my 2nd favorite (Baldur's Gate II being the first) RPG of all time.

I couldn't belive all the real word touches this game had, I felt like I was actually there. In many ways, no other RPG matches this games world "sim" elements so successfully.

All the in-game people have a schedule that they keep to and can be found where they should be when they should be. Hell, I even remeber a critical plot moment where you had to ease drop on a secret meeting and a specific time.

The combat system was a great balance of tactics and simplicity. And you gotta love the magic throwing axes. :)

I still haven't found decided what version of this game is the best... any suggestions?

Does anyone happen to know of any old school character editors for the game?
I have the Ultima Saved Game Editor 1.3 done by Xenerkes Dragon but the one thing I need to edit is my Karma and it doesnt do it.

I stumbled upon that lovely cheat room in LB's castle that keeps respawing chests and kept getting them until my party was loaded with armor and magic axes.
I accidentally hit Ctrl-K on the way out and noticed my karma went from 99 to 27!!!! I guess that counts as stealing?? The one spot in the game that actually does?? I can go steal the guards armor upstairs from their dressers but not that..

So yeah if anybodies got anything post it up! Im already done with all 8 shrines too now I guess I gotta keep doing em over again to bring it back up.

to Slavestate: you can't do the shrines over again - it's a one time deal. But what you can do is leave all your party members at various inns, go to blackthorne's castle ALONE and get caught. You'll be tortured, and if you give him the mantra of the shrine he asks for, he'll destroy the shrine. Then, after you've escaped, you can go to the shrine, and Yell the word of power for the dungeon that corresponds w/ the shrine that's been destroyed. This will fix the shrine, and you'll get tons of karma for it. This can only be done once for each shrine as well though.

Want an easier way to raise karma? Go to the beggar in Minoc and talk to him, give him coins, and leave town. Repeat that, and you'll get 1 karma every time you do it.

And yes, the cheat room on the bottom of the castle is considered stealing.
One last thing, if you don't leave all your party members at the inn before going to Blackthorn's castle, he'll permanently kill one of them. So make sure you don't forget that step! (unless you just have Sadj in your party - then it's perfectly ok to head out there! >:) )

Ahh I remember the absolute shock first time I ever went to Blackthorns castle (oh 1988 or so) and Shamino got wiped from my party. I didnt think of that trick though.. What I ended up doing, first shrine I went to just asked for money.. Gave it 100g, got 1 karma. So after selling all the crap I got from that room in British's castle I was just at about 9999g. So I just kept going and meditating at the Shrine of Compassion giving it 900 gold each time and getting 9 karma points a shot until I got back up to 99.
I was left with 1600gp when I was done heh.

I think Ill go see what happens if I destroy the shrine myself and then fix it! :D

Actually can you destroy em yourself? Here goes!

I spent so long playing I could read the runes without translating  all on an Amstrad 1640 (at least it had EGA)

Some additional spells:
IN XEN MANI (creates food from ginseng garlic and mandrake)
REL XEN BET (needs silk, ash, mandrake and nightshade)

Never owned Ultima 8 (never had a 486 that would play it back then) but 5 did indeed come with a coin. Its the coin with the symbol of the Codex that was used to call you back to Britannia at the beginning of the game.. 4 came with an Ankh, 5 came with the Codex coin, 6 came with the orb of the moons, 7 came with the Fellowship coin, cant remember if 7 pt 2 came with anything that was where I stopped playing Ultima around 94 or so (when my 386 died)..

As for scans, this stuffs all over the internet.. You can even get good pics off of ebay bids sometimes.
Just a few weeks ago someone sold a collection of original MINT COMPLETE IN BOX Ultima 1-5.. I was soooo sad I was broke and it went for almost $300, but the guy still had everything in each box down to all the trinkets, cloth maps, everything..

It's one of those games I've always wanted to play and win, but just never got around to it. I think our copy of the game broke. Ah, was referring to the cloth map - I don't see why they'd have a different version of the cloth map for the same game. The map I see here looks like its for a different version, with the cities not as single points, but scaled to the map.

The hint book I have is the official one from Origin Systems. It has the map of the Underworld, every dungeon, city and location for every magic item in the game. Its system-neutral. http://ultima.wikia.com/wiki/Ultima_V_Cluebook

This is probably my favorite classic RPG next to Wasteland.

Personally I think this is the best sequel, that actually made you feel like you were going back to something you left behind. I had played so much of Ultima 4, half the fun of Ultima 5 was seeing how the world had changed, and how the towns were different. Seeing old characters, and seeing things like the cemetery in Moonglow with the graves of the spirits from U4.

Total classic.

Ah, reliving the days when Num Lock broke games. I'm using the patch to hear Sir Kenneth's music for the first time! (Had to go grab CWSDPMI to get this going in DOSBOX, if anyone's interested.)

Any idea if it's possible to talk to party members? Is it necessary?

But what you can do is leave all your party members at various inns

If you can't talk to them, how do you ask them to leave? (EDIT: Ah, got it... talk to the innkeeper.)

Thanks!

Out of curiosity, can you transfer data from Ultima IV to Ultima V?

yes you can but you may need the "Data.ovl" patch and in DOSBOX
a a:\ -t floppy for a floppy or a c:\ if you have no floppy drive

I once saw a document on this site that had the locations of all the different characters you could get to join your team for Ultima 5. Where is that document? Where are all the mages in Ultima 5?
