Sorry, but I'm sure AitD 3 isn't abandonware, and I have some doubts even on AitD 2....

Alone in the dark 3 was released in 1995 and I couldn't find any buy-links for new CDs only used CDs so maybe it could be categorized as abandonware since it way passed the 5-year border...

Anyway buy link for used Alone in the Dark 3 can be found here: http://www.retrosoftware.com/10633.html

(Retrosoftware looks to be a nice site btw cheap and has good reviews...)

I'm fairly sure I have seen Alone 2&3 for download, so they are out there somewhere. But I can't remember where.

Ok.....how do I get this to run on DOSBox?

Tom Henrik
09-10-2004, 04:43 PM
The simplest way would be to open DOSBox and then drag the game file into the black screen.

InNeedOfDireHelp

Ok.......it doesn't work.....whenever I try to drag the file on the DOSBox black screen.....it comes up with the "restricted" sign.

FreeFreddy

Not into the screen, select the starting .exe of the game and drag it into the icon that starts DosBox. Then it should work.

Tom Henrik
10-10-2004, 08:05 AM
Ok... then you have to do this the hard way ;)

I have opened the archive in c:\alone and I used DOSBox 0.62

After you have followed this picture to the letter, you just have to choose the first option (F1). Enjoy B)

Can anyone help me get the sound working in XP?

It runs fine without sound, but if I enable sound in the game config, it starts running extremely slow.

What settins should I use for the sound card config? I am using onboard ac97.

I would rather not have to install VDMsound or DOSbox. I have enough crap in my registry already.

I love this game......

O.o

If you are a fan of DOS games, then I don't understand why you haven't got DOSBox. It is most certainly not crap. It is actually the best way of playing these games :OK:

:sos: First and foremost, the setup you get to after starting ALONE.EXE is in FRENCH!
Allthough i understand parts of it, enough to get through it, i can't start the game.
When i press Jeur (New Game i suppose) the DOSBox screen goes black and there is a little line blinking in the top left corner.

Guest
20-12-2004, 06:45 PM
Ops, sorry for the extra post, but i didn't get the whole issue into the first one (i happened to send it before i was done..).

This stupid blinking thing goes on for a while and nothing happens, nothing at all!.
And i can't just start the file (and yes i'm using XP), if i do i get an error message:

16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem
C:\ALONE\ALONE.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

And i then get to choose either 'Close' or 'Ignore', both exits me back to the desktop.

Guest
21-12-2004, 05:43 PM
Thanks! :w00t: But even if THAT worked, i can't get any sound!
I noticed that the sound was turned off in the options menu so i turned on Sound FX (Music couldn't be turned on) but then the game ran so slow it almost stopped!
What can i do to fix this?
I can only run the game by simply starting ALONE.EXE, neither DOSBox nor VDMSound works.

this game is the best in the series in my opinion... the atmosphere is one of the best in any game i've played... who cares if your guy is a bunch of chunky triangles being attacked by something that looks like a marionette... the marionette jumps at you through the window and you'll jump... it's really scary!

one thing this game introduced that got picked up by alot of other games like resident evil is the camera angle changing throughout the game... this gives it a much more cinematic feel but also makes it stressfull when your being attacked and suddenly your perspective changes... i dunno but it seems like this is still something that 3d game makers wrestle with.

super great! super creepy! try it now! :OK:

This game is great. I played this game 5 years ago and I finally beat it within a week. Though U have to admit the game is really, really, really, hard without the walkthrough. Make one mistake, U cant go back and fix it (unlesss u loas a saved game waaayyyyy far back) what really got me going was when the rats in the celler started attacking me. Even though there is only two rats, they seem to be doing like 5 damage....... Oh and by teh way. How the hell do u run? I beat the gmae always walking LOL.

Wael

I believe it is done by doubleclicking the direction where in theory the believed character is wanted to run /-

Alone in the Dark 1 (SPOILER)

Does anyone know what's wrong in AITD 1 if I cant throw the lantern on the tree at the end? The tree doesn't set on fie and the lamp goes off whatever I do.

Thanx

Killermyth
05-01-2005, 11:14 PM
First of all, U DONT throw the latern at the tree, it is an invicible magical tree. It is a cursed tree that has teh power to destroy. U must find the magical talisman from the secret passage in the library (where the invicible monster is, u have to kill it with a special knife.) place the talisman on the tree, and WALA! The curse is gone, and YOU WIN!!! LOL and by the way...... Have any of you haev beaten the game? The ending was REALLY distrubing but funny LOL.

More people should use the D-Fend frontend, linked to on the DOSBox site.

Did you know that they've made a horrible movie out of this? Unsuprisingly it has nothing to do with the game except that there's a mansion and the protagonist is named Ed Carnby.

Uwe Boll directed it, (House of the Dead) what a hack.

It used to happen to me a lot but it isn't a copy protection or a bug.
Everything you got to do is when you're about to go down the stairs just press the key to move forward just once, and when it's done and you're down try to stay away from the stairs and move to the sides.

hope it helps :D

I have onboard AC97/ct5880/PCI128 audio as well, and it was a PAIN to get working in pure DOS. Then I found these links: link 1 (http://easymamecab.mameworld.net/html/snddosdr.htm) link 2 (http://www.spmicro.com/mp3sidekick/ensoniq.html)
Works like a charm now.

As for the game itself... I remember reading a review in GamePro for the 3DO version and thinking it looked amazing. I've always wanted to play it since then, and now I have my chance. On first play, the graphics are a bit dated, if not just downright silly. But the gameplay is there. I can see where Resident Evil got its ideas from.

I really hope none of you AITD fans have been subjected to the movie supposedly based on this game.... As stated in a previous post it has NOTHING to do with the game.

It's sad, really, because this game could have been a great movie, very much in line with the dark, creepy, but not buckets of blood trend in horror movies lately, (i.e. The Ring). This Uwe Boll character tried to turn it into some weird kind of Alien vs. Predator thing with gun battles and explosions and junk.

Actually, there's an interesting article (http://www.somethingawful.com/articles.php?a=2649) on www.somethingawful.com today written by a screenwriter who wrote the first incarnation of the script for this movie, but left the project when it became clear that Uwe Boll was not interesting in making a good movie faithful to the atmosphere of the game. From what the writer says, it seems like his ideas for the movie would have been GREAT and would have captured what we all love about this game. It's a good read, if only to get a taste of a movie adaptation of AITD that all of us fans of the game could have actually enjoyed...

Using my pc at work - forgot my password, but i'll still post using my forum name...

Saw the movie last weekened. HORRIBLE !! I should have read the post above before spending my $ on this movie. The only good thing in the movie was Christan Slater. The movie has nothing to do with this game at all. The movie just used the name. Its funny how the ignorant media reporters keep saying "The movie based on the video game 'Alone in the Dark' is in theaters now... " Reporters are just plain dumb.

This is a great game, very creepy. If you are going to play it, try to do it in the dark at night. Even while its raining if you can. It will add to the enjoyment of the game big time. (Thats how i played phantasmagoria the first time - very freeky.)

Dont see the movie - if you think about seeing the movie, i have a suggestion first. 1) Run really fast, head first, into a concrete wall, then when you wake up if you STILL want to see the movie, 2) repeat step 1 again.

Dreadlord

It works this way, when you push use/whatever you need to press space to use or open near a item, you don't use the mouse, to fight, you press the forward button to kick, backwards kicks, left punches with the left hand, right punches with the right hand, to do that you need to select fight in the menu first, see the manual, it's much clearer.

if you mean the "VERY FIRST" room, you have to go over to the stairs in the upper right corner of the room (if you have a realy fast comp. like me your guy will instantly go back up, I figured out a way to get it to stay though) when you get to the bottom of the stairs INSTANTLY press ESC. then press ESC. again it should let you stay there now :[img]http://www.abandonia.com/forum/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /> good luck :guns:

Wow ! I never thought an old game like this is scary. Great game ! :OK:

The only thing I hate in AITD is when a monster hits you and push you in a corner. It's very hard to hit back while the monster continues to hit you like crazy.

I noticed that sometimes when I start the game, the music doesn't work. I simply restart DosBox and continue until the music works.

If the game runs slow on your PC, increase CPU cycles (CTRL-F12) until it runs fine in DosBox.

As for saving games, press ESC (It brings you to the main menu) then choose Save.

I think that the most scary game I have ever played is System Shock 2. I still can't play that game for more than about 30 minutes without turning it off due to my nerves. Man... that game gives me the creeps.

Shame that this doesn't have that level of scariness.

Haradrim

Im not sure about the rats, but for the pirate you have to kill him using a certain sword.

The sword you have to use is the one you get when you kill the suit of armor down the stairs. You throw a heavy statue at the suit of armor and it dies and you pick up its sword which you have to use for the pirate.

Err why not just download this one? But I'm sure if you call that number it will:

1- not work because game is so old and lo longer sold
2- they give "rest of code" to you for free because game is no longer sold

I loved the atmosphere of the game, but it also frustrates me big time!

How the f..k was I supposed to realise that I have have to throw statuette on that living armor to kill it?!!!  :spam: :wall:

And all those f..kin' books that I've thought were some kind of help seem to be worth muck!!! I spend hours analizing them for nothing!!!

Why I can't kill a 99,99% of the monsters?! Special weapons you say? Where?!
How am I supposed to know that I need one in the first place?

Why I can't even kill a f..kin' mouse even after 125 hits?!!!! :ranting:

And why those godamn ghosts don't like any record on the planet. They just don't want to dance no matter what I play!

Why so many adventure game elements with such a crappy interface?! :spam:

Please don't lie to me telling me that you passed this without a walkthrough. I managed to complete every adventure game so far in a blink of an eye, but this puzzles are......a wreck! :ranting:

Timegate is a game with the same interface and much better puzzles... It should be posted here.

Alright I'm in this game and I have one really funny question. When I first went into the dance hall I put the gramaphone on the table. Then I died from the dancers. So I did it again. Now it will not let put the grammaphone onto the table it says there is no room????????????????

Never mind I don't need to put the gramaphone down. I just need to use the certain record. It's all good after much research and doing the WHOLE game again.

Were there many differences in the CD-ROM version? I guessing the one here is the original floppy disk version.

In The CD version the texts are narrated.

Does anyone had problems with the graphics? I'm using the DosBox, what solved my sound problems, but I can't get the game to run in the high details level. Both low an high details options had the same result, and, for what i remember from when i played this game many years ago, i'm now getting the only the low definition.

I could fix it with the "Free in the Dark" patch (http://sourceforge.net/projects/fitd/), but then the sound doesn't work, and the game is in french. i'm using a GeForce FX5200, in Windows XP.

have anyone played alone in the dark 4 - the new nightmare?
I finished playing it a year ago.
the story isnt all that, but the resident evil style graphics were great..

Try repeating the process. Keep on pressing up and the character will run. Yeah, I know it sounds hard, especially on dangerous situations...

OK, I just finished the game...could someone explain it to me? SPOILERS...obviously :)

-What does the article about deformities, hand signals, halleys comet and probably others have to do with anything?

-Jeremy commited suicide because Pickford wanted to posses him? Pickford is the dark man in the fireplace?

Please explain!

You've just answered your own question, in fact: warez sites are sites where you would find games like this one, which is ESA-protected. And it's illegal (offering ESA-protected games for download, I mean, not Alone in the Dark 1), so don't ask for it here.

Does anybody actually read the site?
DOSBox is a program that will let you play DOS games on a newer computer. Here's the link for a short description: http://www.abandonia.com/main.php?nav=programs. The actual download is here (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/download.php?main=1). And there's also a nice tutorial on this site that will help you to set it up properly: http://www.abandonia.com/main.php?nav=index&FAQ=1. Make sure you read that one, it's very helpful.

well, every guest is saying for the same thing, that game doesn't works. Although DosBox is there, but it would be good to make it more noticeable, like on the Game Download page, adding a line "Please Use DosBox to avoid problems". this game discussion has already went 11 pages long and I don't think that someone has really discussed the game as such. :whistling:

Hello to all !!
Sorry for my English :-(

I've got two problems with my original AitD - CD.

First problem is, the game will not start with CD, because it cant recognize it.
I can browse and open every single file on the cd manually, but the game wount start. My cdplayer is ok, other cd's spinning really fast. But the AitD-CD spins slowly. I tried to play with an cd-image and it works, but the game/my harddisk is too slow for a good game.
Can anybody help and explain why this original-cd wount work the right way?
Maybe its a problem with windows but i dont think so. I installed the game with winstall.exe and dos-environment starts automatically.

Second problem: in 99% of all attempts the person will not run after a release and re-click of the up-arrow. Is there a possibility to change the keyboard settings, maybe in windows?

I thank you all for your answers.

Alone in the dark. Great game! I have walkthrough for all of you stuck somewhere...

Alone In the Dark 1

Solution:
---------
Attic
Push the wardrobe closet in front of the window.
Push the chest on top of the trapdoor in the floor
near the piano. Open the chest to get the rifle.

Open the wardrobe closet to get the old Indian cover.

Walk over to the table and get the oil lamp.

Storeroom
Take the bow from the corner near the door.
Search the shelves on the right side to get the oil
can. Use the oil can to refill the oil lamp. Exit the room.

Upstairs Hallway
Walk to the first door on the right and enter. Do not walk
down the hall as it will collapse and kill your character.

Room
Search the rolltop desk in the corner to get the key to the
chest. Use the key to open the chest in the corner next to
the door to get the old cavalry saber.
Open the door and fight the Zombie that will walk inside the
room. The old cavalry saber will break after a short amount
of use. Exit the room and open the door directly across the hall.

Dressing Room
Walk into the room, turn around and fight or shoot the Zombie
that will walk in the room from the hallway. Exit the room
through the door near the window.

Bedroom
Go to the night stand on the left side of the bed (the side
opposite the window), and get the vase.
Fight or shoot the monster that will jump into the room through
the window.

Throw the vase and get the key to the dresser that was hidden
inside. Use the key to open the dresser with the teddy bear
on top of it. Take the two small mirrors.

Exit the room through the door near the bed. Walk to and
enter the door directly across the hall.

Bathroom
Open the cabinet and take the first aid kit. Open the first
aid kit and take the flask. Drink the contents of the flask
to gain more health points.
Throw or drop unnecessary items: first aid kit, empty flask,
chest's key, dresser's key, and empty oil can. Exit the room
and open the door at the end of the hall.

Upper Lobby
Put one small mirror on each small statue at both ends of
the room. Avoid any contact with the winged monsters by
staying close to the wall. Walk downstairs.

Lower Lobby
Do not touch the suit of armor.
If the very heavy statuette (found in the Dark Bedroom)
is in the inventory, stand directly in front of the armor
and throw the statuette to destroy the armor. Take the sword.

If the statuette is not in the inventory, walk to the door
on the right side of the stairs and enter.

Sitting Room
Do not touch the ghost figure in the chair.
Get the gramophone on the table.

Search the cabinet to get the cartridges. Use the cartridges
to reload the rifle.

Get the matchbox from the fireplace mantle. Exit the room
and go to the door straight ahead on the other side of the
stairs.

Hallway
Follow the hall around and enter the second door that your
character sees. The first door is directly across from the
door from which your character entered the hall.

Bathroom
Run into the room and get the jug next to the cabinet.
Ignore the monster in the bathtub as it cannot be killed;
it will harm your character.

Open the cabinet and get the first aid kit. Open the kit
and get the flask. Drink the contents of the flask to gain
more health points. Exit the room and continue down the hall
to the next door.

Dark Bedroom
Use the matchbox to light the oil lamp.
Get the very heavy statuette from the table.

Exit the room and use the open/search command to put the
lamp away.

Go back to the Lower Lobby and destroy the suit of armor.
Leave the very heavy statuette there. Walk to either side
of the stairs and enter the dark opening.

Front Lobby
Drop the gramophone here. It will be used later in the game.
Turn left and enter the right door of two in the corner
next to the stairs. The left door will be locked.

Enclosed Porch
Search the back side of the statue to get three arrows.
Leave the room quickly to avoid the falling spiders.
They will not leave the room. Walk to the door on the
other side of the stairs next to a narrow hallway.

Kitchen
Enter the smaller dark brown door nearest to the door
that was just entered.
Get the key to the cellar hanging on the wall.

Search the shelf to and take the box of biscuits.
Eat the biscuits to gain more health points.

Drop or throw unneeded items: empty box, first aid kit,
and the empty flask.

Search the large cabinet near the table to get the knife.

Enter the second smaller dark brown door next to a normal
sized door. After entering the small closet, quickly back
out. Use the knife to kill the zombie that entered the
room when your character entered the closet.

Re-enter the closet and search the pile of coal in the
corner to get a shoe box. Open the box and get the revolver.

Get the oil can in the other corner. Use the oil can to
refill the lamp.

Use the jug next to the barrel of water to fill the jug.

Drop or throw unneeded items: empty oil can, empty box,
and knife.

Exit the closet and return to the kitchen. Get the pot
of soup from the fireplace.

Exit the kitchen through the normal door that is next
to the closet. Open the door across the small hall.

Dining Room
Walk to the right side of the table and put the pot of
soup on the table.
Avoid the walking zombie and wait until it sits. Exit
the room through the door next to the large cabinet.

Smoking Room
Run to the other side of the table and stand next to the
chair. Get the lighter from the table.
Use the water jug to douse the smoking ashtray on the
table. Your character will take some damage from the smoke.

Open the double doors that are not locked and go in to
the hall. Walk back to the white stairs in the front
lobby and climb them. Go back to the hallway that led
to the Dark Bedroom. Continue down the hall to the end
and open the door.

Hallway With Paintings
Walk up to the first painting (a man with an axe) and
put the old Indian cover over it.
Walk halfway down the middle of the hall and use the bow
to fire an arrow at the painting at the far end. Once the
arrow has hit the painting, purple smoke will appear.
Enter the door at the far end of the hall.

Jeremy's Bedroom
Get the false book from the table.
Push the grandfather clock aside and search the hole behind
it to get the key to Jeremy's Study. Exit the room and enter
the double doors located halfway down the hall.

Library
Use the oil lamp. Put the lamp down in the middle of the floor.
Quickly run down the corridor at the upper left of the
screen. Follow it around to the right until an indentation
is seen in the wall of books. Go slightly past this and
search the books next to the indentation to find a
mechanism. Use the false book to open the Secret Room
behind the indentation and quickly enter it. The monster
chasing your character can only be killed by a certain
dagger that is found inside the Secret Room

Secret Room
Get the talisman from the shelf.
Search the bookshelves to get the dagger with the curved
blade. Use the dagger to kill the monster in the Library.

Get the oil lamp from the floor and open the closed double
doors. Your character is now in the lower lobby.

Go through the dark opening, go down the stairs, and
get the gramophone.

Use the silver key to open the locked door next to the
door to the enclosed porch.

Continue down the big hall and re-enter the Smoking Room.
Use the key to open the locked double doors.

Jeremy's Study
Put the old cavalry saber in the coat of arms on the wall.
If the saber was broken, put both halves in the coat of arms.
Search the bookcase in the corner to get the record.

Exit the room and go back through the Smoking Room, into
the hall. Enter the doors to the side of the hall (not
the ones at the end of the hall).

Pirate's Room
Use the sword to kill the pirate. The pirate can not be shot.
Get the key to the Dance Hall from the dead pirate.
Use the key to open the double doors.

Dance Hall
Walk to a corner and use the dance of death record on the
gramophone. The ghosts will dance. Do not let them touch
your character.
Get the key to the pirate's chest from the fireplace mantle.

Exit the room and go back to Jeremy's Study.
Walk down the stairs in the floor.

Bottomless Chasm
Run across the collapsing bridge.
Follow the tunnels until a giant worm is seen behind
your character.

Run away from the worm until your character can turn
right into another tunnel.

Cave
Fight or shoot the monster that waits for your character
to enter.
Continue down this tunnel until the worm is seen again.
Run back to the place in the tunnel where your character
turned right and fought the monster.

Turn right down the tunnel created by the worm. If
the worm is still there, repeat the previous step
until the worm moves out of the tunnel.

Underground
Step down onto the wooden dock and walk around to
the right until your character comes to a lighter
shaded brown section of the wood. Jump
over this section as it will collapse if stepped on.
Avoid the monster in the water or kill it. If it is
killed, more monsters will appear.

Climb up the ledge to the opening.

Tunnel
Fight or shoot the spider monster. Continue down the tunnel.

Rock Pillar Cavern
Stand in the opening and shoot the flying monster.
Jump from rock pillar to rock pillar. Use the pillars
to the left.

When the screen view changes, go to the opening on the
right. Follow the tunnel until it forks. Go right at the fork.

Large Cavern With Planks
Walk to the right side of the rock plateau.
Jump over the light colored wooden planks onto the
darker ones.

Jump and climb up rock pillars until your character
reaches the far side of the room.

Shoot or avoid the flying creature in the middle of the cavern.

Go to the chest.

Pirate's Chest
Use the key to open the chest and get the gem.
Push the rock behind the chest to one side.

Enter the dark opening and follow the rock corridor.

Step down the ledge and continue forward until it goes black.

Dark Maze
Use the oil lamp.
Walk to the left. Try to wind around to the left until
your character cannot go that direction any further.

Turn downwards and go down until it is no longer possible
to go further.

Turn to the right of the screen and walk until your character
comes to a stone door with a hole in it. Use the gem to open
the door.

Enter the room and use the open/search command to put the
oil lamp away.

End Cavern
Run and jump off the rock steps.
Run to the stone altar in front of the tree while dodging
the fireballs and the monster in the water. Get the hook.
While in front of the altar, put the talisman on the altar.
The fireballs will stop.

Use the lighter to re-light the oil lamp. Throw the oil lamp
at the tree.

Run to the right of the cavern and climb onto a different
rock plateau.

Climb up to the rock door and use the hook to open the door.

Turn left and go back into the maze. It will now be visible.
Turn right and use the hook to open the door.

Turn left. Your character is now back in the Underground area.
Walk along the wooden docks and climb to the opening on the
other side. Turn right and follow the tunnel straight ahead
until your character comes to a small black opening.
Enter the opening.

Basement
Walk around the wine racks to the other side of the room
and climb the stairs. Your character is now back in the
Front Lobby. Walk down the large hall and open the double
doors at the end.

Maybe because in 1992 a double-speed CD drive was considered fast.:D
I dont think so. THe Speed of CD-reading is defined by the Drive only. And I got many old CD's. Only this one wount work.

I've gone through the game and everything, and there's an item missing from how I remember it as a kid. There was this red book in the library that killed you even if you were on the pentagram. I can't seem to find it. Which stack is it in?

Hello, can anybody tell me what is written in the yellow Book?. I think it was called "de vermis miteris" and if you try to read it, you are punished with a horrible death. Does it ring?

Thanks for your help

I think it's what kids these days use as slang for 'Does it ring a bell?' or 'Sound familiar?'. Not entirely sure though.

Man I suck at this game. I got up to that monster in the library.

Yes, it's that book which contains a deadly spell. There's just one problem: as i remember it was written in Latin O.o ... I hoped, that anyone here could translate it for me. That would be nice!!

Another strange thing i noticed is about: Alone in the Dark II
Remember the part, when the whitch catches you in the house?(a few moments before you take the part of the little girl).

I've downloaded the game from another Abandonia Page, and in this version(after being catched) you still play the girl, but not on the ship!! You are in the Garden outside the house...there is a car you can drive with, and some of the evil guys in yellow jackets playing with instruments. Does anybody know had the same version?!? Because i don't know what to do there O.o

Thanks for any kind of help

Have a nice weekend

hey guys, just found my old CD version of AITD 1. Works fine on WinXP, but without any sound! It lets me select the soundblaster correctly in the setup, as well as having sound in the game disabled and music enabled (although actually there is NO sound at all playing).

I tried dosbox as well - using a vitual D: drive for the cd image and the regular c to c mount. When i try running the game then, it just stays at a black screen without anything happening. Increasing CPU cycles does not lead to an advancement as well.

Anyone know how to set up this game properly in xp with or without dosbox?

You shouldn't need to use Daemon for this! If your computer is DOS compatable (like my old laptop). You can double click and play no CD or crack needed.
If isn't than you need Dosbox to get it run under XP etc.
Dosbox is easy to get the hang of and there are great threads in the troubleshoot forum, like this one (http://www.abandonia.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=5684).

Sure.

1) - go to the main site and look for the game.
2) - find the big red NO-GO button.
3) Click on it and read the text carefully.
4) Find out, you are not allowed to download the game and why!

There's no step 5, because you can't get the game, so you can finally go for that walk in the park with a book under your arm and read it on a bench with the Sun warming your face. :ok:

I'm as far as the part where you need to play the 'dance of death' record to make the ballroom dancers move. However whenever I try to play it dosbox freezes up and gives me this error:

The instruction at "0x6ac89190" referenced memory at "0x0285c4f8". The memory could not be "read".

I'm running XP and the newest version of dosbox, and the rest of the game has worked fine till now. Any suggestions?

I just start the game in the DOSBOX.
I opened the start-file (here TATOU.COM) and after that it appeared a window where I could choose between START GAME, CONFGURATIONS and END.
I chose START GAME and after that I just saw a black screen with the blinking cursor.
I tried other DOS-games with the DOSBOX and there werenīt any problems.
Itīs just that one game I want to play which I canīt play. Thatīs very angrily

With my vacations coming up I wanted to download it again. Managed to find a French version but I just quit because I couldn't understand the story, which was the only part of the game I was interested in. Maybe I'll find a english version around the net.

I also came here trying to find out how to beat the game. I fooled around for about an hour trying to figure out what to do before I checked a walkthrough that said you have to throw the lit lamp at the tree. That doesn't work for me. You say you're only supposed to put the talisman there, but about three walkthroughs say you're supposed to burn down the tree. Just putting the talisman there doesn't end the game...

I played this game with a friend about ten years ago, when I was an adventure games freak-boy (that is, before turning into an adventure games freak-youngster) and it REALLY scared me. It's great.
For all I remember, you have to place the talisman in front of the tree quickly before the monster grabs you, (there you will see some picture; the curse is gone) AND THEN throw the oil lamp towards it. Don't forget to light up the lamp with the lighter BEFORE throwing it, it won't work if it is not lit.

Hi there, So glad i can finaly solve the game's puzzle like 13 years later:D
I'm trying to make the game work with sound..had to0 install it in dos version, with the wicked off graphics with no correct text wrote anywere in the installer....Koz if i install it with windows the game will say no cd and stuff....But here my problem, i cant get no sound at all, the game runs perfectly but when i activate sound it freeze the character after half a step forward...and make no sound anyway...
I tried to make the sound be activated with the dos installer but it makes no changes...
I've got a soundblaster X-fi e-pro.
I tried using dosbox too, but i canot set a mounted drive as when i press the backslash it makes like if i pressed enter on a texter...goes to the other line....frickin wicked....And i cannot get it to run the game by drag-and-drop like told earlier in the whole tchat here in the forum........it makes a (/) cursor..LOL..by the way dos is so frickin complicatred...even more when its emulated :tai:
im under Xp....Soon under vista if i can get some 512mb 266mhz ddr ram at a so cheap price that ill just stay silant....(wicked, the board canot use 400mhz ddr ram)
i just whish i could hear teh vinyl with the gramophone...and feel the ambiance a bit more...:P
Thats all...just whish someone has the Right answer:)
(too great...im almost not scared anymore of that game..all these years after its release):D

-----------edit----------
Oh noooooo:( there comes the worst thing that could ever happens with the game; a bug.
It happened at the whole beginning when going down the first stairs and it happens again so near to the end:(
The character goes in the tunel behind the barrels in the whine cellar and when it shows the worm hole scene, the character turns back and goes back uin the hole...Whatever how many times i try to pass throught again, whatever if i quickly press the up arrow so it doesnt interferes...or change action..equip any objects...the character just goes through, stand, turn and return in the cellar room.....What can i do then.....Atari/Infogram should realy make a redesing of that game...with new graphics made out of the old drawings with a little enhencement...new characters...a bit more text in the books...mayby more books....and a bug correction..hahaha...seriously, this game is fameous.....but so dissapointing falling on such a bug so near to teh finale:P

As for DosBox: You can set drive mounting in dosbox.conf, so you won't have to type it in manually. (for exact how to, read your readme)

As to the backslash/enter issue, are you using a non-english keyboard layout? Try switching to UK or US layout and see if that helps.

Juntread
10-01-2007, 09:00 PM
An english kn layout huh......oooh well:P
Finaly beaten the game...The trick with the dead men's tree is realy easy, kill the green slug as many times it comes to disturb you, (after putting the talisman in place of course)
when you're quiet, light the lantern, save, throw it...you need to be the most near to the tree to be able to reach it....then it turns red, you die....try again, fire, tripple the up arrow like a drum and escape.....as teh run key is way hard to make work...you might have to do it many times..also if your health is low .. dont even think about makin it in one piece...:):P
the bone-head car driver scared me for a second haha:P

Okay, maybe I'm stupid or something, and I probably am, but I can't even get the into the game. Sort of.
Okay, so Dos works on this computer. I've unzipped and all that. I open the game. I go, new game and it asks me for two items on page X of the manual. I downloaded the manual but there is no page that high and no item pictures in there.
Am I stupid or is this a trick?

The game should be already cracked. Try:
a) confirming without entering anything
b) confirming with entering a random sequence

Guest
23-01-2007, 11:05 PM
Okay so what happens is I choose any random ones and it goes to the choose character screen. After I choose my character it goes into another screen (presumably the introduction) and nothing happens. I can see something at the end of the road which looks like it should be doing something.
No writing pops up, I can't use my mouse or type.

Do you just have to be patient?

Everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!

I had a H.P. Lovecraft game called "Call of Cthulhu". it's modern game (better graphics than half-life 2), BUT IT WAS MADE BY "H.P. Lovecraft". CAN YOU BELIEVE IT. After this game, i don't think any kind of another modern game, or dos H.P. Lovecraft games. it's the game that gave my the creeps, but not effects (Call of Cthulhu feels like the enemies would be right outside your door, and you are getting away from them). bad thing i deleted it :( .
Then i started Call of Cthulhu, i think i was playing at living room, lights on. however, it still gave me creeps, as you can think every shot would kill you (i was on easiest setting) but it never did. also, you can think enemies would be right outside your window, and would kill you anytime you play.
sorry i was :offtopic: . to say truth, Alone in the dark is nothing compared to Call of Cthulhu (bad grafiks, and no need to get spooked) but look at the time! Alone in dark was made at 1992, and Call of Cthulhu, i don't know, maybe 2005. but, for it's time (not so sure  ) great.
I don't get it why should you get scared?.. ups!, sorry i never checked Alone in the dark so i don't know about sounds.

sorry i was :offtopic:

First off wanted to say great site.

As for Alone in the Dark 1 I downloaded it and it plays great! The bad thing is that I noticed that this is the floppy disk version thus no narration :( . I have the original CD version (the one with AitD1 and Jack in the dark) and remember playing it when I was a kid.

My question is is it possible for you guys to offer the CD version for download OR any tips on how I would get my CD version working with DosBOX. (Note: I'm running Ubuntu Linux so any tips involving Wine would be helpful)

Thanks :OK:

Now, the copy I got didn't have any manuals or documentation, but when I downloaded Abandonia's manual, it didn't have that either.

...

Does anyone have a copy of what I need, or at least a clue as to what I'm supposed to select?

Thanks in advance, Anon.

FYI: If it'd be quicker, I can be reached at [BEEEP]@gmail.com.

Any help is appreciated.

Your problem description is insufficient for us to provide a proper answer.

Please answer the following questions:
1. What operating system do you have?
2. Did you try using VDMSound or DosBox to run the game?
3. What exact steps did you follow when trying to run the game?

I have an old 386 with 4 megs memory and when i try to start the game, like i said before ,the red screen appears with the message:Virus found in tatou.com .Please reboot. The sistem blocks and i have to reboot.I downloaded the game also from another site and it was the same problem.Someone wrote that the game runs also on 386 computers but i am not so sure.

Do you have a "Virus check" option enabled in your BIOS? See if the game works with that disabled.

Try hitting Delete during the memory check, that's the one used for most old machines.

I have read through everything on here dealing with sound, so I am sorry this question has repeated itself again! I have windows XP and dowloaded Dosbox. I went through the tutorial and did what it asked as far as changing to

mount C C:/DOS/CDrive
mount D D:/ -t cdrom
C:
CLS

Then everything was downloaded and saved under cdrive/flash. When I type install it said that it was and illegal command. Config says

use -writeconfig filename to write the current config
use -writelang gilename to write the current language strings.

Then the setup command is also illegal. So I went ahead and started the game. It works! But no sound. I went through the forum and seen that I should dowload SBPCI I copied everything into cdrive under flash and copied and pasted config and autoexec from SBCI to yhe cdrive folder under flash. I also went to microsoft with a link available under one of the forums and then I went back into wordpad and wrote config.nt and autoexec.nt for the game itself. I never deleted the others. Also why is it at the beginning in french. All my options to start the game and check out the sound are in french. After messing with those for a while I turned the music on (what it says when you press escape during game play) But it says the sound effects were off. Maybe if I messed with those a little longer it would work? All files were extracted after I added the others for sound and I restarted my computer. I have been at this for 4 hours, so please help!

How the f..k was I supposed to realise that I have have to throw statuette on that living armor to kill it?!!! :flame: :flame: :SPAM: :wall:  :flame:

And all those f..kin' books that I've thought were some kind of help seem to be worth muck!!! I spend hours analizing them for nothing!!!

Why I can't kill a 99,99% of the monsters?! Special weapons you say? Where?!
How am I supposed to know that I need one in the first place?

Why I can't even kill a f..kin' mouse even after 125 hits?!!!! :flame:

And why those godamn ghosts don't like any record on the planet. They just don't want to dance no matter what I play!

Why so many adventure game elements with such a crappy interface?! :SPAM:

Please don't lie to me telling me that you passed this without a walkthrough. I managed to complete every adventure game so far in a blink of an eye, but this puzzles are......a wreck! :flame:

Timegate is a game with the same interface and much better puzzles... It should be posted here.

I'll go and cool off now...

LOL. Don't use a walkthrough that is going to tell you more than you want to know. I strongly recommend the following site for those game playing times when you feel like inventing new words.

So how exactly do you run again?

I am quite far into the game and only managed to get across the bridge by jumping (JUST MADE IT!) but now i cannot figure out how to run.

Ive tryed tapping the up arrow key then holding it, tapping it continuously, everything! I cant seem to find a way to get this damn Carnby guy to run!

I managed to jump my way past the worm thing at first and kill the little monster, but as soon as i see the worm face to face at the other end of the tunnel it kills me. Am i not supposed to do this and go to where the worm originally was when i entered the cave?

Thanks in advance! I remember having nightmares as a kid when my cousin would bring his old 3DO over and make us play the game.

Tapping twice and then holding the arrow key worked for me. I had to slow the game down to get it to work, though. Try reducing the cycles in DOSBox. It would often take more than one try. I feel your pain. :tai:

SPOILER ALERT

I remember the giant worm scene well.
After you kill the furball backtrack and go into the cave opening where the worm was the first encounter.

Unfortunately the tunnel the worm is originally occupying leads to a cellar with an invincible rat! According to most guides i am supposed to end up on a wooden dock of some sort? I tried going through the rat wine cellar and up the stairs and they appear to collapse or something. This part is perticularily tough because i still am not able to run!

Did you make a wrong turn in the cave at the Y intersection? Unfortunately you will need to run to finish the game. There is a collapsing bridge at some point that you need to run across. Have you tried reducing the cycles in DOSBox? Running is tricky ... press and hold the up arrow and then very quickly release and press the up arrow again.

Belive it or not i got across the bridge simply by using the "jump" feature. But runnign seems to be getting the better of me. After i kill the little monster i continue foreward and come face to face with the ugly worm. Am i supposed to run backwards and go where its rear was sticking out after it moved the first time? Thanks.

Sorry for the double post but;

I did the undoable! I managed to beat the game (well...sort of) without running at all.

I used the jump option to get across the breaking bridge, to avoid the worm and to beat the tree schene.

Theres only one glitch; at the end where i am supposed to walk through the large hall and open the double doors at the end; i cant! Well; im in the main hall but i can walk through walls, stairs, doors, etc. Its as if the background texture is screwed up so that it doesnt change camera views when i go to a new area....

That was the biggest kick in the pants after spending a few hours beating a game ive waited at least 6-8 years to figure out how the story ends! All i wanted was that glorious "The End" screen! (NOT THE ONE WITH ME LIEING DEAD BY THE TREE! :bleh: )

Hey all.

Just a quick question.

Whenever I try to go downstairs from the attic, Carnby stops, pivettes and moves back up.

I searched several walkthroughs, but it doesn't look like i've missed anything.

Can anyone help?

Did you find lamp, rifle, rug and two books? If I remember correctly one of the books is difficult to find.

One of the books is at the bookshelf and the other one is in the closet.

What should I do after I got the hook? I can only use it to open up couple of doors with weird mechanism.

You know when you load the game up and it asks you to "select the items represented on page..XXX" does this mean anything?

well i searched around the internet for the game manual, and it only has 15 pages.. and none of them have items represented on them.

I can play the game of course, because it lets you select any old items and then carrys on.. but i just wanted to know what book this page XXX is supposed to be in and if i can get a copy from anywhere and if it would actually do anything good if i chose the right items>?>?

anybody know?

Wow! This one deserves to be a classic up there with ZZT and Sonic!

The review was right on - for heaven's sake *don't* play this game in the dark (or worse, late at night like me!) unless you want to be in a cold sweat and have trouble sleeping. Heck, this game spooked me when I was playing with all the lights -on- at 3:00 PM!
Storyline progressed very well as you read the various notes and books left strewn about, and a lot of the ways to get around traps were very logical if you thought about it. Like in the one hallway - cover the angry trapper with an -indian- blanket, then shoot the picture of the indian with what? An arrow!

Scenery is great, animation is crude by today's standards but astonishing for stuff made back then. Not the programmers fault that their computers could only do so much.

Finally the ending itself is worthy of being in a good Goosebumps book. All in all a great brain teaser and spook-tacular game!

I tried running the game with the Dos-Box under XP and it worked pretty well. Well, I tried to run the game under DOS in a win98 and it was working properly, until the end of the introduction, when the game just stopped and returned to DOS.
If someone could tell me what's going on and how I fix it, I would be very happy.

could be a soundcard issue. Try setting up for no sound and give it a go. If it works, then try different sound settings.

Try increasing the cycles in DOSBox by pressing Ctrl f-12 (Ctrl f-11 to decrease) or set a higher cycles value in the DOSBox configuration file.

Generally speaking (since I haven't tried this particular game)
Could be a soundcard issue. Let's see if it is:

Make sure the game setup uses the same soundcard and parameters as in the DOSBox configuration.
Default is Soundblastr 16, addresse 220, irq 7, dma 1 hma 5

If you still have problems:
Set up the game for no sound whatsoever in the _games's_ setup, then try the game again.

If you get it to run now, try various settings for sound.

IMPORTANT: You will need to set up the soundcard according to your DOSBox configuration file. Change this first, then change the sound parameters in the game's setup.

Hello

This issue has been already mentioned, there seems to be no answer however. Upon leaving the bedroom with fake book and movable grandfather clock you should go through the door to the library. I assume it is done with the key taken from the secret opening behind the clock. But no matter what I try the door remains locked. Back from when I played it for the first time I have vague memory that THAT was some sort of copy protection in the game (when you entered wrong symbols at the beginning the doors remained shut), but the game is supposed to be already cracked, so that should not be a problem.

Am I doing something wrong?
