I uploaded the ISO (BIN/CUE) version of BioForge today to 4shared. Is it OK to publish
the link at ISO Cellar? What about Lion ISO? And where to send box shots now that FTP is down?

What do you mean it doesn't work??? I just tested it again, it does work, but it's true, that there's a bit longer waiting time before it starts to run (about half a minute) after the selection and the acctual game (with a wildlife picture - because there's no sound it looks like it is frozen, but just give it more time).

Guest
24-06-2007, 08:47 PM
oh ok I fixed it. You need the adjust the path in LIONS.CFG to your DOSBox-Path (in my case I had to change it to C:\)

Sorry for the double post but since I'm unregistered I can't edit my own posts :bleh:

Sebatianos

Ah, OK. I automatically assume that people don't change directories, so I haven't even tested it for that. Sorry if I seemed a bit rude, but I just get annoyed with people who think everything needs to happen within 3 seconds (even though it seems that this wasn't the case now).

Strange.

Try this:
Download and extract the archive. You'll have the LION folder there. Now put it directly on X: (usually C:, D: or E:) and run dosbox. Now mount C: X:\ (X being the drive you selected). and then cd lion and lion. Should work.

So which opening scene do you mean? If it's after the menu when the gameplay should start, just give it a bit more time (and you might try increasing the DOSBox cycles before running the game). If you can't even get to the selection menu then there really might be a problem.

Sounds a lot. How high are your cycles in DOSBox? (if they're too high the result is slowing things down again). They should be between 12000 and 16000 (with DOSBox 7) and the waiting time will be around 15 seconds (don't try changing the cycles while waiting at that screen).

I tried to run the game both in dosbox and in windows (win 2k professional). In dosbox it gives me the same stuff other people said "hr_hires.c #1,-1". In win it seems to work, but when I choose the mission and the lion and I start the game, it crashes. Any hint? I didn't understand how should I change the lion.cfg. Currently it is: CDPATH=C:\LION . How should i modify it?

How do you mount it in DOSBox? Remember that mounting changes the paths.

Try putting Lion in a directory on your drive C: called Oldgames.
Then in DOSBox:
mount C C:\oldgames

That should work.

:\ When I try to start up lion (yes I have read the posts before), it shows the error message: hr_hires.c #1.-1

Then I click on the screen after 30 minues of waiting and it didn't change then i looked on the DOS Box Status screen and it said it has to close due to an error? I tried everything like changing the path to C:/ (witch it already was) I'm still really confused. :\ I really do need help, can someone walk me through this?

Hello, thanks to all who replied to the help needed posts! Although I didn't post for help, merely reading the forums solved my problem of being unable to run "lion" the game. <_<

However since it was a bit confusing to get it running, I want to say the solution is to use DOSBOX but key in "mount c c:\". Then "c:". Then "cd lion". Lastly "lion".

The idea is to get DOSBOX to read something like "C:\LION>lion"

If it reads "C:\>lion", then you'll get the error message "hr_hires.c #1.-1"
In other words, mounting the LION folder directly on C: doesn't work!

I find this extremely odd because the same is not true for WOLF. If anybody who understands the programming of these games better can provide an explanation for this, I'm all ears.

I found the problem, i'm retarded. I thought the area were you enter your name was a loading bar.

Guest_Joe_*
03-11-2007, 09:11 AM
For those that are still having problems, here's basically what you do:
Download the game
Unzip the files
Extract into the file (Cdriver-which if you followed the directions for Dosbox you'll know where that is.)
Open up Dosbox
If you're still having problems changing it to your C drive simply type: c c:\
After that change to the location- MY EXAMPLE where I placed mine was in my program files
which the command (cd progra~1) then (cd dosbox) then (cd cdrive) then (cd lion) then (lion again)
I too was getting that retarded message so what I did next was go to my lion folder and within it is a
Configuration file which is abbreviated. If it says you do not have a program to launch- just browse your system for notepad.
After you've done that a small, very small, configuration sentence will be there- Instead of the current path
change that to Dosbox-path, and then tell it where you have your file stored.
Once again MY EXAMPLE considering I put the folder in my programs would be
DOSBox-Path=C:\DOSbox\CDrive\LION
Your may vary depending on where you've put yours.

I hope this helps, just simplifying all the other posts on the thread!

~Joe

Yeah, I've gotten to play as far as picking an lion/lioness and well then it goes blank. I am fond of the simulation and not missions, so ever time I make an scenario, picking the time, season etc. I continue to lions and once I've picked them all, POP! I go back to my background, it doesn't freeze or anything. It's weird. P.S I don't use the dosbox, I still get the hr_hires.c #1.-1 Though I can get wolf to work, I have wolf and lion in the same place and use the same method of loading it. Any suggestions?

So, getting the ISO file through the forum here, is that the only way to get the sound files? I mean, I don't particularly mind signing up and whatnot, but it'd be nice if there was an easier way...
Also, I have figured out mating, but has anyone actually gotten cubs? How long does it take?

I dont know if anyone still looks on here or has tryed it but if you press space and then press on the moon in the bottom right (having full water and food helps) but it passes a lot of time then just eat, drink and do it again. Still takes a while to get cubs but its helps :)

Kitsuneko

Yeah, the problem with that is it doesn't actually make the months or seasons go any faster. You could have played through 1000 days and still not be through the dry season (as has happened to me). It can be useful to pass the time, but then I suppose you run the risk of running out of prey if you do it too much...

Kitsuneko
21-03-2008, 01:10 AM
One good thing about this game is there's no set breeding season; lions breed year-round. ;) Make sure all of the lions' bars are full or nearly full, and then start clicking on the other lion like mad. It should happen sooner or later.
*note* I have not been able to tell yet if mating is always successful. You may want to try it several times to get pregnant.

Yeah, I think found the answer to that because I mated three times with a lion and went all the way to 110 days (by clicking the moon) and nothing happened. :( So I mated again, I tried to mate a second time but it would not let me so, I went to the 110 days and CUBS! So I think you have to mate until it won't let you anymore! My cubs are so cute! :)
*note* Don't you think they should of mentioned that this game shows mating? For the little kids that play this game? lol! :amused:

Ok this is really odd! Has this happened to anyone else before? Ok I started a simulation game and there were two lions. Both girls. Well My pridemate went bizerk and killed a poacher and she went to kill another but the poacher killed her I know this because I was following her wondering what the frigg she's doing! Anyway suddenly 4 cubs appearded out of nowhere and started following me. :oh: I just started the game so they weren't from me or my pridemate. Oh yea I did attack A female lion that was trying to eat my food! She was limping, mabey the cubs were hers and she died I don't know please reply! Well I take care of them for now! :amused:

Ooh, wait. So the second time, you used the fast-time with the moon to pass time and you got cubs? I didn't know it could actually speed up gestation time, since it doesn't seem to affect seasons.
Also, yeah, the thing with the lionnesses is really odd, and nothing I've ever seen. Would be interesting, though. ;)

Yep, like I said up there I mated three times then fast forwarded all the way to 110 days (That's how long it takes.) and nothing happened so I mated again and it would not let me mate a second time (I tried and tried) Eventually I gave up and fast forwarded time to 110 days again and cubs appeared! Oh and when I fast forward time my seasons change.

Has anyone been able to run Lion using DOSBox? I keep trying, but nothing I do works. I've read the entire thread and tried all the steps people have posted, but I'm still getting the 'hr_hires.c #1.-1' bug.

I tried changing the path in the LION.CFG , but I'm not even sure what I should change it to.

Any help?

I had success using it with VDMS actually, though as i recall you are unlikely to get any sound working with it.

The game is really only a little interesting for a short while though... sleeping, hunting, etc. can only keep you interested for so long :p.

I've noticed the "the 'hr_hires.c #1.-1' bug" myself sometimes when I'm trying to play in full screen in Dosbox and have figured a way around it.

1. Run MSDos Prompt
2. press Alt+Enter (to go to full screen)
3. At the prompt type "exit" to close MSDos window (still in full screen)
4. Now run Dosbox
5. Press Alt+Enter again to go to full screen for Dosbox
6. Type in the mount commands so you can play your game
7. Run game

So far I have had no problems for running Lion and Wolf in full screen modes following this method. *Also* if you wish to go back to desktop (temporarily) pause Lion or Wolf using 'Space Bar' then press Alt+Enter, remember after using this method always pause before you switch to full screen or back to windowed mode.

Hope this helps those who are having the error.. (still no sound with Lion but I'll be fixing that when I buy the game) :)

Like I said, I've tried everything, and Lion still won't run. I haven't even got it to start; I keep getting the hr_hires.c #1.-1 bug/thing.

Here's what I do:
I mount the drive I keep all my old games in (including Wolf, which runs fine) and then enter this (I use my D: drive for my old games):

D:\>CD Lion
D:\>Lion.exe

Then, I get this screen:

hr_hires.c #1.-1
D:\LION>

What am I doing wrong?

Just a quick question in relation to Lion (excuse my nubbinsry, since it has probably already been answered, and if so I apologise):

I have the CD version of Lion, and have been trying to get it to run on DOSBox, but it complains of the CD needing to be in the CD drive (which it is, I hasten to add). I was hoping to get Lion to run with sound as I've never managed it before... then I read that you could get the full, working version from here from the "ISO Cellar"...?

I was wondering if someone could explain to me what the ISO Cellar is, and also if the full version of Lion with sound is indeed located there?

Sorry for being wordy and possibly repeating stuff that has been answered previously in the thread :S

You must mount your cddrive as D in dosbox:

mount d x:\ -t cdrom

x:\ is your real cddrive letter under windows.

And read this:
A beginner's guide to DOSBox (http://www.abandonia.com/vbullet/showthread.php?t=14406)

I did this but it doesn't seem to be able to find the actual lion EXE on the CD itself - that bit is installed on C, and when that's mounted, of course, the no CD error happens...

All your problems come from a bad virtual C mount, a bad CD mount, a bad install.
That, or you don't have the original CD but a crummy downloaded one.

Straitjacket
12-04-2008, 10:15 PM
I have read the guide, but it more applies to stuff downloaded from Abandonia rather than something you have the CD for... running the setup.exe causes it to say that it cannot be installed to C; "The specified path (C:\Lion) cannot be created."

The ISO Cellar is a secret forum to which users gain access after they have been actively participating in discussions for a while.
Your account will first have to be fixed to work correctly, however, and it can't be done right now since the access to the admin controls is buggered to hell.
But yes, there is a full version of Lion in the ISO Cellar.

running the setup.exe causes it to say that it cannot be installed to C; "The specified path (C:\Lion) cannot be created."
Do you actually have a C mount configured? I'd guess not...

According to prior information in this topic, about 110 days and yes, you can skip time to reduce the wait.

Nevermind. I figured it out. X(

Oh yeah and if anyone still wants to know, to attack a lion/lioness in your pride, you have to double click on them over and over. You can't kill them though, and you can only attack lions of the same gender. (Ex: if your a lioness you can only attack other female lions. Same with males.)

I even calculate when there gonna give birth and skip days until its like 4 days prior to the birthing and then I skip by hours but still, nothing.

Its REALLY annoying. Also, if theres no males in the pride is it still possible to have cubs with a male in another pride?

Ok I've read the entire thread and I can't get lion to work. I downloaded it, extracted all the files, put it in a folder, and ran dosbox. Type in:
mount c c:/
c:
cd {folder name here}
lion

Doesn't work. So I try some other things, still doesn't work, read through this thread and move the extracted stuff from lion into my drive (c:) and try again except with:

mount c c:/oldgames
c:
cd lion

Now I get "Unable to change to lion", but anything else I tried would get me a black screen with weird numbers and stuff on the top (other people have complained about this, forget what it says) and c:/lion. :/ Help?

If you put "LION" folder in your system's "C:\" (not DosBOX's "C:\") then make sure that "LIONS.CFG" contains CDPATH=C:\ ,not a CDPATH=C:\LION\ or somthing else(edit with Notepad)."LIONS.CFG" shoud have a path of DIRECTORY THAT CONTAINS "LION" folder, not "LION" folder itself. And you gotta launch ms-dos link named "lion" through DosBOX,not lion.exe.Also in the game when theres lion photos on the screen -- its loading, have a patience(2-3 mins for my glitched PC)

Worked for me :)

Were there any other games like this besides Wolf?? I love both of them...very neat games.

I hope they wise up and make something fun like this for the Wii or something ...maybe with several different animals to play as. On that note, Sim Animal wasn't very fun at all -- they can do better.

I really want to get the sound for this one sometime in the future. 19 more posts to go maybe? I hope.

Thanks for adding this game (and Wolf) to the dl section!

Anyone know how exactly to take on masai and poachers?
A few of the scenarios require me to actively kill a masai warrior, its not a choice to just live for the par time, I gotta kill one, wich is suicide.

So how do you do it?

-If you get within sight of seeing what direction they are facing, they will attack you moments later.
-If you get behind them, sneak up and attack, they will spin around and also one hit kill you.
-If you try to run, you eventually run out of stamina, they overtake you, appearently not having such a limitation, and walk up along side you and stab you in the side.

I can't get the pride to help me either, they all run like a bunch of pussys the moment the warrior goes into attack mode.

Those Masai are really tricky.

My friend said you gotta be extra sneaky with them, but I still die every time I confront one.
-stab- and you die

one thing they should have given more thought on with this game... seriously, even one hyena can insta kill you if you arn't careful.

It says nothing in the manual so I'm at a loss as to how to deal with them as well...

I first played a Demo of this game from an issue of PC gamer when I was like 13.....thats it...all I played was the demo and I loved it...Im 26 now and have no idea how and or why I remembered to search for this game...any help and or tips for the game would be appreciated...

What a coincidence - I came looking for this game, too, for the very same reason. Somehow I remembered this game being more first person in view, rather than third, but that's a childhood memory does.

i got better information here: http://www.dosgames.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10437 but i will give full instructions here so it isn't spread out across this thread.

download DOSbox
download LION

go to computer > local disc c > users > (your name)

in there, create a folder called oldgames or whatever you desire, it doesn't matter.

unpack the lion download exactly to that folder

once done, open up DOSbox, and type in exactly as is typed in each line here

mount c c:\users\yourname\oldgames(or whatever you named the folder for it)

c:
cd lion
LION

it all should be typed in and entered in that order, LION should then start correctly.

hope this helps some people who weren't able to get it running.

Alright, I'll go chop some heads off soon if this won't start doing what it's supposed to do.

I've tried every trick from the first ten pages and the VISTA-howto page.
However, neither my original game CD, my full-installed original game NOR the downloaded game will work.

My DOSBox 0.73 refuses to believe such a thing as "LION" exists. The farthest I got was this:

Z:\>mount c: c:/users/ttx/oldgames
Drive C is mounted as local directory c:/users/ttx/oldgames\
(love my Finnish keyboard, it won't accept any \s there, just /, but they both work whatsoever.)

Z:\>c:/cd lion/LION
Unable to change to lion/LION

Tried to mount straight from the E, my CD-DVD rom, but it says it "doesn't exist".
On other accounts, it leads me to "please insert CD", which surprisingly is in comp already and has not been taken out for one moment after putting it in.

So.
I've tried this from drive D, drive C, C and Program Files, C and users and my name and oldgames, drive C without a folder, drive C with folder, same folder as DOSbox...
... practically yes, my everything.

Well, I copied the thing I put in there to the box above, so my mistake is in there (and I know I probably did one, just don't know where as it accepted my commands anyway). I thought about it too but I'm not familiar with DOSBox yet, so I just thought that ok, perhaps it wants to operate on Z anyway and kept going.

What I typed in was
mount c c:/eeeettttcccc.

So it said "mounted c" and etc, but it still showed the Z for some reason.

Will try again now fresh and caffeined up.

I didn't think about that, sensing that every enter starts a new command, and I kept thinking about it as a single line.

NOW on to try it ->

... I think I need to register just to get this one game going in order to stop flooding, but:

Now it says "Unable to change to: lion"
So it picks off the "cd" from the start and says it's unable to change to lion - only. (which I got by messing around with the Z driver too, though. So I managed to get from point A to point B to get to point C which I could [somehow] reach straight from point A, but at least I got SOMETHING right...)

Here I have a picture for you, judge if you see something wrong in there:
http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/2435/42851834.gif

I also tried just command "cd", it opened C:/ tag for me (I couldn't write anything there though) and continued straight to basic "lion", resulting in... tadah, "Please insert LION CD in CDROM drive and try again".)

Hmmmm...

Windows-> computer-> folder c:/users/ttx/oldgames
You should have a folder in there called lion.
If not, things got screwed up when unzipping the archive, start over I would say.

You need that folder.
You must have when you look in windows:
c:/users/ttx/oldgames/lion/ *all the files here*

When i launch it it say "you need 2.6mb expanded memory. you have 0 bytes." which is weird because in C: drive i got 12GB and D: drive i got 49.9 GB and i place LION folders in each and tried to run it. I also tried doing "mount d d:\LION\" or "mount c c:\user\shiranui\LION\" and it still not work. i have vista and i have changed the Vista's "Standart VGA Graphics Adapter" video driver Vista's "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" video driver and its still not working i could use some help plz

I know that when females are in estrus, they roll onto their backs when a male approaches. Does anyone know approximately how often females go into estrus in a simulation game?

Press U on your keyboard and you'll see if she is in estrus.
If she rolls on her back she is in estrus.
I don't know how frequent they get in estrus but if she isn't in estrus you can always click on the moon to advance with 7 days and try again.

Also here's a tip for people who are having trouble mating:

Press U to see if a female is in estrus (if she is in estrus she will roll on her back)
Get alone with the male and press U again (she will roll again)
While she is rolling click on the male (make sure you are no other lions around)
If you've done it right they should mate.
Continue this until they won't mate anymore and you should get cubs within weeks (i'm not sure how much weeks)
If you'll take good care of the cubs and keep them alive for about 2 years they should grow up, females will join the pack (Unless there are already five lions in the pack then they will leave also you can only have five lions in a pack so for example you have four lions in the pack and you've got four cubs only one female cub will join the pack when she grows up the rest will leave the pack.)

I hope this helps:3:

As it seems you're too lazy to scroll through some pages , I'll do it for you:
How do you mount it in DOSBox? Remember that mounting changes the paths.

Try putting Lion in a directory on your drive C: called Oldgames.
Then in DOSBox:
mount C C:\oldgames

That should work.

to be complete:
Also in dosbox your inputs will be:

c:
cd lion
lion

Nothing to click on.

[to be complete˛]
When we talk about dosbox here we don't talk about that sucker of a dos command window but the "real" dosbox 0.73.
Some more stuff for you to read:

The Lion exe is there alright.

Make sure the DOS prompt is telling you "lion" is the current directory.

If the directory is in the root directory C, it should look like this:

C:\LION>

Or, if the Lion directory is in a subdirectory named say, games, it'll look like

C:\GAMES\LION>

If the prompt is pointing at a different directory than the game directory, then DOS will not be able to find the Lion.exe.

If the prompt is pointing at the right directory AND you're being told that LION is an illegal command, please consider the possibility of a faulty download. Try downloading the game again.

i got better information here: http://www.dosgames.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10437 but i will give full instructions here so it isn't spread out across this thread.

download DOSbox
download LION

go to computer > local disc c > users > (your name)

in there, create a folder called oldgames or whatever you desire, it doesn't matter.

unpack the lion download exactly to that folder

once done, open up DOSbox, and type in exactly as is typed in each line here

mount c c:\users\yourname\oldgames(or whatever you named the folder for it)

c:
cd lion
LION

it all should be typed in and entered in that order, LION should then start correctly.

hope this helps some people who weren't able to get it running.

I can get to the title menu, but once I try to start a simulation game after selecting my options, the screen turns black and tells me that the program cannot find file PGNEW.WRL even though it is obviously there in my LION folder and prompts me to a command.

Something similar happens when I try to start a scenario game. The program tells me it cannot find the file USER.DAT. This time, however, I have no such file for real, and I'm still prompted to a command.

I'd be much obliged if someone could help me with my problem. If you think you can help, please, ask questions if I forgot a key point. I'm very eager to play this game, so I will be patient. Thanks so much!

I tried redownloading the game, but I got the same results.

Could you tell me where I can find the cycle setting?

PS: I see this in my DOSBox status window: "Warning: file c:\OLDGAMES\LION\PGNEW.WRL exists and fails to open in write mode. Please Remove write-protection"

That sounds like a problem that the program is actually giving feedback on.

DarthHelmet86

The cycles can be seen when Dosbox is in it's windowed mode. It normally only starts at 3000 cycles you will need to increase this for the game to work. (Ctrl F12 increases the cycles) Try running Dosbox as an administrator, and check if that file is write-protected.

Been discussed before - read this thread from the beginning.

Alright, so I'm trying to get this game working, & like everyone else out there, I'm getting the "hr_hires.c #1,-1" error

With most dos games, I just drag the icon onto dosbox & it runs without any problems
Due to the issues with Lion, I've been actually starting up Dosbox & following instructions to a T

I realize it's been discussed before, but the fact is I've gone through every page of this thread, tried every variant that's been mentioned about how to fix it (putting it directly into C:, putting it in it's own folder, etc)
I've double & triple checked this to make sure I don't have ANY spelling mistakes or other PEBCAK errors.

The fact is, it's not working, & I can't figure out why. Is anyone else still having the same problem even after all the troubleshooting, or is it something to do with my computer?

(also, if I try starting the game not in dosbox, I get a black screen that says "Divide Error" then it shuts itself down.

DarthHelmet86

That would be because the files in the ISO cellar are just that part of an ISO. They aren't meant to be extracted into the installed game. They are meant to be all downloaded and turned into an ISO of the original CD, from there you can install the game (more then likely in Dosbox).

Unpack lion.rar to get the CD image.

After you close DOSBox, every next time you want to play the game you have to just mount the CD image in DOSBox first.

Check all COM, EXE and BAT files in the root of the CD. It's not unusual for the installer to be named differently.
The game manual probably explains which executable starts the installation procedure.

There is a setup.exe on the CD (I just downloaded it to check). Make sure you have the CD and your normal C drive mounted (like C:\oldgames as your C drive for Dosbox). Type;

D:
cd setup

And the setup should run, it will install it onto your mounted C drive (which is why you should mount your C drive as a folder where you keep your old games so that it isn't installing onto your real C:\ drive.)

As Fifth said if you want to play the CD version of the game you are going to need to remount it every time you want to play.

ladybirdscreatures
12-04-2011, 04:33 PM
Ok, now it says 'unable to change to: setup'
This is my mount code:

mount d c:\games
d:

then I typed cd lion to go to d:\lion, then I typed cd setup and got that message. Am I mounting it wrong? Can anyone suggest a mount code that would work?

I'd like to add that all the files from the ISO cellar are the following:
lion.ccd
lion.sfv
lion.img
lion.cue
lion.sub

I think I'm missing something. It doesn't look like a whole CD's contents to me but I definately downloaded all the files from the ISO cellar and those 5 files are all that's contained

The Fifth Horseman
12-04-2011, 10:51 PM
You weren't even looking on the right drive this entire time.
1. Mount your oldgames directory as the C drive
2. IMGMOUNT the cd image as the D drive
3. Change to the D drive
4. Look for the installer now. dir is your friend, especially when used as dir *.exe , dir *.com or dir *.bat (or you could just use Norton Commander in your copy of DOSBox and filter the display to only show EXE, COM and BAT files; IIRC it also has a file search function)

ladybirdscreatures

THANK YOU SO MUCH. it works now :D
what I did was configure dosbox with the following:

mount c c:\games
imgmount d c:\games\lion\lion.cue -t cdrom
d:

then typed dir which displayed the files and it did in fact contain setup.exe, so I typed setup.exe and it popped up with the install screen. worked like a charm! Thanks :3:

Edit:
Ok, at the end of installation it puts dosbox to c:\games\lion, with a message saying that I should change directory to c:\games\lion from now on. I type lion and the game starts with sound.
I close the game and change dosbox to mount c:\games\lion, type lion and the game starts but without sound! What's wrong now? :(

When your dosbox prompt is c:\lion> input dir /w
Take a look what you get, if you don't see a lion.exe you screwed up somewhere, most usual beginners screwup is creating a double lion folder when unzipping, eg: you have another 'lion' dir in your first lion dir.
If yes, copy everything from your second lion folder into your first one (do it in Windows). Try again then (dosbox restart needed here).

Also: don't use the build in Win unzipper, but something as http://www.7-zip.org/

Also˛: some more details if things still goes wrong would be helpful.......

I know my version of the game has a Lion.exe in it that I got from this site. I will redownload it and double check it is there in the archive, otherwise it might need to be setup or installed in some way first. BRB with info.

*Edit* Game redownloaded and there is a Lion.exe in the archive. If you don't have the view settings set to show the .exe it will be listed as Lion and as an application. Remember double check that you haven't unzipped the Lion folder into another folder called Lion, i.e you open up the folder you created while unzipping and inside it is another folder called Lion. If that is the case then as Dosraider said copy everything out of the second folder and move it into the first one.

Ok; with the info you gave me I was able to open LION, but now it gives me this every time I try to start the game:
hr_hires.c #1.-1
C:\LION>

And I can't type anything.
I realise this was discussed earlier but as far as I can see it was never resolved. Has anyone solved this problem?

Sorry-but does anyone actually know how to solve the hr_hires.c #1.-1 problem?
I've checked websites all over the net, and nothing...

I get the same error if I try to run the game from C:\

LIONS.CFG file says "CDPATH=C:\LION", so you have to run the game from C:\LION or you can edit the path in the configuration file.

Ahh.
I tried it on my mom's laptop and it worked: so now I'm playing it but I have a few problems:
There is no sound-I can't find a setup path
I don't know how to kill hyenas or humans.
I don't know how to mate
It takes three minutes to load a scenario.
Is there anything I can do to fix/improve this list?

There is no sound-I can't find a setup path
Read the review: "Neither has the sound, but then again, this is also something you will have to forgive us for not adding, the archive would be much larger that way."
Register to the site and get the full CD image from the ISO cellar if you want sound.

I don't know how to kill hyenas or humans.
I don't know how to mate
Read the manual? You can download it from the game's extras section.

It takes three minutes to load a scenario.
In DOSBox input (or change them in the dosbox.conf):
cycles max
core dynamic
before you start the game. Then the game loads faster but once it has loaded you might want to decrease the CPU cycles with Ctrl+F11 if the game runs too fast.

That doesn't give us anything as a base to determine what your problem is.
What is the first "it"? What is the second "it"?

Its a bit tricky to mate in lion.
First try to get all four bars (health, stamina, food, and water) full.
Then, if you're a lioness, press 'U'. If the lioness rolls over, she's willing to mate.
Approach the male and harass him constantly by following him, roaring, etc. It helps if his four bars are near full too. What you want to do is press 'u' when near him and click on him. If you were successful, you will see a quick mating scene. Do this until you can no longer mate. Wait a few game hours or days and repeat the process.

If your lioness is pregnant, she will no longer want to mate. It will take about 180 days for the cubs to be born. They will function the same as the other lions, but will be smaller in size. You cannot play as your cubs. It takes about 800 days for them to grow up fully, and they will either join the pride as an adult member, or leave. Hope I helped :)

Okay, I tried to search this topic up but I couldnt manage to find it and the searching system was bugging me.So I decided to post and see what happens.

As I play 'LION' I am for a male 'Bob' and attempt to try and take over a nearby pride. As I fight the dominant male, I manage to injure him, I can see that he's limping then, but I continue to fight days and nights and I just can't seem to get rid of him. He's been limping ever since and I've been fighting him until my endurance bar runs out; and Bob has very good endurance. On the scenario, taking over that pride was easy, but now it's like huh?

I just cant take over this pride and I want to!

I DID IT! I FINALLY DEFEATED THE hr_hires c. #1 -1 (For Win XP..)
I was so upset when I fixed it.
Unzip Lion into C:\ so your directory is C:\LION\LION.EXE
Install DOSBox into C:\LION
Change Lion.cfg to read "CDPATH=C:\"
Drag LION.EXE onto DOSBox.EXE
Success.

I hope this thread isn't dead... Ok so I've read through the forum three times, tried everything that was said and I'm still having issues. I'm sill getting the hr_hires c. #1 -1 message. Here is what I do

I have the LION folder in a folder called TMP on C:
I open DOS BOX and mount c as C:\TMP
after loading C it goes like this:
C:\>cd lion
C:\LION>
then I type LION and I get:
hr_hires c. #1 -1
C:\LION>
I'm using the latest DOSBOX, I edited the .CFG file, I've even tried draging the .EXE and the MDOS file to DOSBOX.EXE nothing works.
I really, really wanna play this game please help.

... I edited the .CFG file ...
mount c C:\TMP
C:\>cd lion
C:\LION>

And in this case the cfg file should read
CDPATH=C:\LION

This error should only occur if the game is unable to find its' data files - either the path to the game directory inside DOSBox is different than the path specified in lions.cfg or your archiver was set to ignore the directory structure inside the ZIPs when unpacking the game.

Try replacing the line in lions.cfg with this:
CDPATH=.
(Yes, that's a period after the equality sign)

If that doesn't work, please show us a screenshot of the contents of your C:\TMP\LION directory.

Thank you for all the help. I did finally get it to work. Apparently it was a download error. It worked fine after I redownloaded and tried again. Now my only problem is figuring out how to mate and join other lions in a pride :palm:

I'm always making Mozumba and Umar mate and it's working. But it's already two/three days in-game and she isn't rolling in her back and I'm at day 21 in-game. Does that mean she is pregnant?

Oh, and Jinja was mauled during hunting and her health won't go up. She's been very distant from the Pride as well.

Okay so... I tried opening Lions in the DOSbox but... Here's the thing I've been doing
mount c c:\lion
c:
cd lion
lion

But at "cd lion" it says "Unable to change to: lion"
Help? Also, when I skip that part and just do
Mount c c:\lion
c:
lion

It comes up with this "hr_hires.c #1.-1"
Heeelp?

I've been playing WOLF, and it's amazing(still trying to mate o-o no luck) but I really want to play LION... So, I'd appreciate help c:

mount c c:\lion

Nope, wrong mount.

Unzip the whole "lion" dir in \oldgames\ so you get \oldgames\lion\

In dosbox mount \oldgames\ as virtual C:
if done correctly

c:
cd lion
lion

will work.

What the specific \oldgames\ dir is depends of your OS.
Read the tutorials.
Notice: you should never mount a games dir directly as C: in dosbox, but always use \oldgames\ (or similar) with the game directory (folder) as subdirectory of \oldgames\
Some games need that specific mount to be able to find their files.
Even if some (in fact most) dosgames will work with game folder mounted directly as C: many won't be able to run/find needed files..... so sooner or later you run into this kind of problems.
Again: read the tutorials, they are there for a reason.

I found this to work fine! All I had to do was put the period, then drag the .exe ontop of DOSBox. Thank you all!

i LOVED this game when I was younger. Been searching high and low for this and can't believe I actually found it again!

Only problem is no sound.
And also it seems to run fairly slow on Dosbox. I'm getting lots of lags and I'm not sure why. Any good fixes?
