right i am stuck now i am on http://www.abandonia.com/main.php?nav=games&FAQ=1 and everything has worked fine, i have used constructor instead of flash. everything has worked fine until i got to the part where you type install, when i do that it says illegal command: install, then when i do setup it says illegal command setup. when i do config it says:
C:\CONST\config
config tool :
Use -writeconf filename to write the current config.
Use -writelang filename to write the current language strings.
p.s i just wanted to know what team u supported because my team Middlesbrough F.C knocked out steaue in the semi-final of the uefa cup and all the rapid fans were happy

There is still an error if you set the animation off ... Error: can't find the movie or something like that =\

Animations are little movies that are played in the game's toolbar screen on the upper-right, movies are played full screen mode. If the movie files are missing and are "called for" the game crashes.

I have lag when a factory is on my screen. who knows how fo to fix that? I have read this entire thread. I use D-fend and have changed the settings ( memsize/cycles/fullscreen ). When I don't have a factory on my screen the game runs as it should.

The problem went away for me when I set Cycles to 13000.
The problem I'm getting is that hitting Alt+Enter doesn't full-screen it, just presents it the same size with a gert black border around it.
Other than that, all is well under WinXP and Dosbox!

I fund out, if you want to play Network in this game, type in DOSBOX:
IPXnet startserver - The server
Test: In my version after this, Network is working :sneaky:
IPXnet connect - for client
For help: IPXnet help

Dosbox: Basic Setup and Installation (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?page=Basic+Setup+and+Installation+of+Dos Box)
There are several other FAQ's on the subject, one on main Abandonia site and some threads on this very subject in Troubleshooting forum. I'm too busy to go looking after them for you, but... well, I think you can find them yourself without much problem.

Assuming you now have DOSBox installed...
Step 1: Download and Install D-Fend from HERE (http://members.home.nl/mabus/dfend.htm).
Step 2: Using the D-Fend wizard, browse to the constructor GAME.EXE file where it says Game EXE. You don't need anything in the setup box. Type "Constructor" as the profile name. Go to the next page (Button marked >>)
Step 3: On the next page, choose 15000 under the cycles dropdown box. Default settings work fine for the rest of this page. Click next.
Step 4: Click Auto Create, and go to the next page.
Step 5: Click next FOUR times, to get to the memory requirements page; use the dropdown box to set 63mb.
Step 6: Click next, then click finish. You will return to the D-Fend main screen.
Step 7: Right-click Constructor in the D-Fend window, and choose Run Game.
Step 8: Once you're in the main window, be sure to navigate to Game settings and change "Display all video animations" to 'No'
Step 9: You can hit Alt + Enter when the game is the active window to fullscreen it. The same key combination will drop out of fullscreen when you're done. You may want to lower your desktop resolution temporarily to 800x600 or so to view it best.
Step 10: Henjoy. Great game, but devilishly hard.

You might want to check out the official DosBox FAQ (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php), and particularly this part of it. (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?page=Basic+Setup+and+Installation+of+Dos Box) It is quite helpful for users unfamiliar with DosBox.

As far as I know. You might need some tweaking to get it run well, though.
If it doesn't work for you, try using VDMSound or DosBox (both downloadable from Abandonia's programs and utilities page (http://www.abandonia.com/main.php?nav=programs)).

First of all, if you guys (or girls) are still having trouble i've seen most of the posts of which people are having trouble with so here’s what I did...
First of all download Dosbox in one of the above posts and the game itself either from your connection but if it’s too crappy then someone else’s.
Once the Dosbox is done downloading I remember in one of the posts some one said to change the dosbox config and replace some of the text well for you noobs here's how you do it...
Right click on dosbox.cfg file (I don’t think the format letters are correct) and click on properties and once the properties box pops up then click on change where it says | Opens with: dosbox (CHANGE...) | then click on note pad.
Open up the dosbox which should open up note pad and look for the part where it says [cpu] and replace what ever the other guy said and this should fix the lag problem a bit.
Next actually opening the game
Before that you must set up the sound so this is how you do it. You click and drag the file SETSOUND to the dosbox file as in this...| SETSOUND | --DRAG--> | DOSBOX| as the icons (You will also have to do this in most of the games you download from this website if its dosbox is needed...) for all the sound types (MIDI and others you must select AUTO DETECT in which will find the dosbox's emulated sound cards and once your done test the sounds to see if they are working, for the Digital you should hear a old man saying "Hello this is constructor are you receiving??" and for the MIDI you should hear a crappy sci-fi sorta music.
To run constructor do the same thing as SETSOUND but instead do it with the file GAME
Some of the stuff in Constructor are missing (trust me I once had the game) so in Game Settings (in the game) where it says "Display all video animations = Yes) Change it to NO so it wont crash again saying that this and that is missing
This is all I could remember from all your problems but if there are any unsolved ones please email me jax1506@hotmail.com
I will be finding other downloads and seeing if they have all the stuff there since you guys might be annoyed at the fact that your probably thinking that your missing a lot of cool stuff from the animations but your not really…
Try it out, have fun and look out for me!

Hi everyone! I've had the same problem you all have: I coudn't play either Constructor or Street Wars (the name of Mob Wars here in Spain and Europe) because I used Windows XP. I really love those games, so I spent a whole week looking for solutions and trying different ways. Finally I heard about Virtual PC. You can download it free from Microsoft, I think (it is also very easy to download from eMule). It's an awsome program that emulates any computer you want, and very easy to use (much more easy and efficient than Dos Box). The only think you need is to create a virtual hard drive and then install the MSDOS (you can find it looking for it in emule, very easy to install too) or download a hard drive with MSDOS (extension .vhd). If you want, you can contact me and I'll send you my virtual hard drive. ([BEEEP]@hotmail.com) The experience was great!! The game works exactly the same as the original (no need to adjust speed), the sound was correct, as well as the graphics. I haven't tried playing Street Wars yet (I'm downloading Windows 95) but I suppose it will run OK. Well, I hope this was useful and you can play them without problems, because they are some awsome game and it's a pity they are no longer played. If you need something just mail me. See u and good luck! :ok:

Use DosBox (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net) to run the game. You can download it here (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/download.php?main=1).
And as a side note, learn what is the _real_ speeed of your CPU. Because I'm pretty damn sure it's not 64 mhz.

People that don't know how to configure dosbox....
I found a similar solution to the problem by running virtual pc 2007.
You need a win 98 iso or the actual cd and install it on virtual pc.
I have the original constuctor iso also and it works perfect on virtal pc 2007.
The network play works also and it has all the cinematics and animations on it.
If someone can tell me where I can upload this 450mb iso I'd be happy to share the full thing and include steps on how to run it on virtual pc 2007.
Virtual pc 2007 is free and you can get a win98 iso easy.
EDIT: NVM I just found out that the full installation of 400mb doesn't even include computers in the network play.
The one that is posted on this site has network ability with computers.
The only problem I have now is sound problems where I get a stutter sound that runs until I close the game. Any help?

You can split the archive into several parts and upload to Rapidshare or a similar service.
Once you get a sufficient postcount (I think it's somwhere between 5 an 20 posts... this has been subject to frequent changes ever since it's been put into place), you will be able to access the ISO Cellar forum, which is used specifically for such purposes.

Yeah I was thinking about breaking it down and putting it up on some ftp site but I was hoping someone was having a ftp server where you don't have to have limits on it.
I also found out that the CD includes a win_95 run and a dos function which both are full with movies.
The DOS version has computers included in the multiplayer but the win_95 version doesn't.

With dosbox people who own original have problems with error message cant find cd. The game isnt that old compared to similar games/older ones. Games that have been adapted for xp. Without understanding the deep complexities I cannot truely comment on this.

First of all... never, NEVER use an external image mounting program with DosBox. Use Dosbox' internal IMGMOUNT utility instead.
Second, you may have to mess with low-level support and labels... Here's how to do it. (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?page=Internal+Programs%2FMount#CDROM)

Hello
I have original CD too and it works!
You first have to download DOSBox (I have version 0.70)
Don't install the game, you'll have to install it through the DOSBox.
Once you've downloaded the DOSBox, install it.
Put your CD in your cdrom drive.
Open the DOSBox.
Then you must mount your cdrom drive (let's say it's called F:\) so that you can open it in the DOSBox.
You can give this drive another name in your DOSBox but let's say you give it the same letter (f).
But first of all, you have to find out (before mounting your cdrom drive in the DOSBox) what is the number of your cdrom drive, by typing mount -cd + ENTER. This command will tell you the numbers of each of your cdrom drives, either the real ones and the virtual ones.
Once you know the number of the cdrom drive in which you placed your CD, you can type (for windows xp):
mount f F:\ -t cdrom -usecd 0 -ioctl + ENTER.
Explanation:
f = the name of the cdrom drive in the DOSBox
F = the real name of your cdrom drive in your PC
0 (or 1 or 2 or ...) = The number of the cdrom drive, reported by mount -cd
ioctl = for win2k/xp/linux
Once you've typed this, DOSBox tells you "Drive F is mounted as CDRom F:\"
Then you type f: + ENTER
Now you can install your game:
The file in your cd that can install the game is "install.exe"
So you type install.exe + ENTER
You follow the instructions for the installation of your CD.
I had created a folder, BEFORE doing the installation, on my hard drive called "OldGames" and thus I installed the game into this folder.
Once your game is installed, you'll have to mount your folder as a drive in the DOSBox.
Let's take my example: My game is installed in E:\OldGame. Thus, the "game.exe" finds itself in E:\OldGame\ACCLAIM\CN\GAME.EXE
In the DOSBox, once my game was installed, I typed: mount c E:\OldGame + ENTER
Now, E:\OldGame is the drive C:\ in the DOSBox.
NOTE: I think that each time you want to command directly to the DOSBox (like mount your cdrom drive or "mount -cd" or things like that), you have to return to Z:\
Thus to go into my "OldGame" folder, I type: c: +ENTER
Then, each time you want to go further in your folders, you have to type cd "The name of the folder" + ENTER.
So then I type: cd ACCLAIM + ENTER
Then I type: cd CN + ENTER
Then I type: GAME.EXE + ENTER
And my game runs.
And I'm happy :brain:
NOTE: To have fullscreen: ALT + ENTER. And to quit the fullscreen and return to a windowsize: ALT + ENTER.
Each time you'll want to play, you'll have to open your DOSBox, first mount your cdrom drive and then mount your folder where you installed the game, and finally follow the same procedure.
So I hope it will work with you too!!!
Good luck!
P.S.: Sorry for my english, I did the best I could...

Maybe once you've installed the game through the Dosbox is it better to start again from the beginning
and mount your cdrom drive and then mount your game folder... I don't know why it doesn't work

Maybe once you've installed the game through the Dosbox is it better to start again from the beginning
and mount your cdrom drive and then mount your game folder... I don't know why it doesn't work
with you.

it's the same with me. i made what u said but it keeps saying constructor cd must be in drive

I read post 261, p.18 by Elwood, which was incredibly helpful. It works as stated and I think it confirms I have configured both DOS Box and D-Fend correctly. However, I get the exact same problem as IcenFlame (post 277, p. 19 - sorry I don't know how to do quotes on this forum):
Hi All
I'm trying to run construtor on a XP machine. I cannot find a solution to the error I'm getting. When i use DosBox to mount the game etc and run the game.exe
I get the following Error
Error = Error reading INSTALL.DAT for PATHS
Does anyone have any idea what this is about?
The Fifth Horseman
16-07-2007, 04:32 PM
You need to edit Install.dat to include correct paths to where the game directory is located in DOSBox
i don't want to be rude or sth... but why can't just sbdy up the .iso of that game?:[
i already wanted to pay it but i can't find one with a price below 40~ euros...

Ok, ISOs is an "issue" here in the sense they are usually too huge for AB. BUT: Register as a member, post helpful posts for guests and other members to enjoy, and who knows what will come out of it ;)

What Midget meant is: We've got an ISO of it in what we call the ISO Cellar. However, that is only accessible for registered users with 20 or more posts.

Just one thing... don't try spamming to get that postcount in one day.
It shouldn't be a problem to get 20 posts over a period of three to five days. Just take a look on what discussions are going on and participate. Look around, try to help with something if you can - for example, that sorting project we've got going in the Requests forum is a perfect opportunity to rack in some easy posts.
PS. Remember that posts made in 3xBlah don't increase your postcount.

Mhm... can't you just destroy the computers mock tudor houses? I mean just take over his "mock Tudor" houses and then destroy them. Now you should be able to build more than 3 because there is a maximum number of houses that can be build of one type!

Hmmm...i have a problem with water leakage, well, basically the house starts leaking water, and i couldn't find a way to stop it, so i say, "what the hell" and destroy the house, little do i know its spreads to all the rest of the houses on the estate, i had too much stress with it i just quit :P
So, my question is, how do you fix leaking water in houses?

Hi guys!
I had this game long time ago, so I decided to download it and try to play it.
I installed the Windows Version and tried to play it with the Compatibility Windows 95 on Windows XP.
But when I run it it asks me for CD. Anyone has a solution?

well, the game should be run in dosbox and dont forget to disable 'display all animations' in the menu
Guest
26-07-2007, 04:25 PM
Well, but dosbox seems to be a pain in the behind to configure.
All I need is to find a way to pass by the problem of not having a CD in the drive (or a pirate one, as I lost the original). Would be easier, wouldn't be? As there isn't a crack (or I didn't find one), someone knows any other way?
Would appreciate some help.
_r.u.s.s.
26-07-2007, 04:28 PM
its not realy a pain=) just run it and it took me 1 minute to mount drive. after downloading dosbox (there are default configs already) just type in "intro" in to console and everything is explained in there.. and if you still dont get it then there are step-by-step walkthroughs on the site
btw the game is cracked already, its issue with your NT operation system
Mighty Midget
26-07-2007, 04:29 PM
Well, if you need a crack, then you're out of luck here I'm afraid.
About DOSBox: It isn't all that hard to configure. The most important thing is to read the DOSBox "walkthrough":
http://www.abandonia.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=14913
and be patient about it. You will get the hang of it, and if there are problems, search our forums and then ask for help if you still need it.

My PC is a Pentium IV, 3Ghz, 512MB RAM, 115GB Disk Space...
The rest, I did exactly like in the tutorial, except, of course, the part to "install and run" the Constructor game. I even used the same paths and directory names, just to be easier.
DOSBox is 0.70.

Hi!
I've downloaded the .iso version of this game, and got it working when i replaced the existing game.exe with the one from Abandonia-version. I run the game trough VDM Sound with the NOFLB.com / Game.exe .bat file. It seems to work great except for the lack of sound :S. When i run setsound in regular windows mode it works perfect and is able to play the test sounds etc. But when i run setsound through VDM there's no sound att all.
What am i doing wrong?

you just download "dosbox" then drag and drop constructor "game" file onto the dosbox file itself (open the dosbox progrom folder and drag and drop constructor game file on the dosbox main file and it will automatically open up dosbox and run fine :ok: ) it works perfectly no lagging or sound problem and the graphics are A1. i love this game hope my dodgy info helped some troubled souls out there for this wikid game. :w00t:

The movie file is on the original CDROM only. Back in 1997 that's how game companies distributed stuff for copyright protection. The download would get just too big with the movie file.

It's been a while since I played but from what I remember...
Under the map/TV monitor on your screen, there should be an icon for gadgets. I think it's shaped like a christmas tree, though that might be the factory production screen.
Once you've figured out which button to use, click on it to send out a delivery man to place the object.
(Pro tip: Put a subway station on each estate, and put one right outside the entry to your gadget factory to speed up delivery.)
Some gadets, like PCs and Burglar alarms must be put inside houses. You can either direct tenants to go collect them or, from the gadget factory screen, you can have them delivered to your tenants.
To remove gadgets, send a foreman to demolish them.

For the benefit of (near) future readers, here's the two bits of advice which helped me out.
I ran it with Dosbox (My version is 0.69, I don't know if it's been updated) and I ran it on my Windows XP machine.
I don't consider myself any kind of computer wiz, so this should be in the reach of a casual user.
Hi people! Get ready to kiss your build-related lag goodbye :bye:
1. Go into your C:\Program Files\DOSBox-0.63\dosbox.conf
2. Look for the following:
[cpu]
# core -- CPU Core used in emulation: simple, normal, full, dynamic.
# cycles -- Amount of instructions dosbox tries to emulate each millisecond.
# Setting this higher than your machine can handle is bad!
# cycleup -- Amount of cycles to increase/decrease with keycombo.
# cycledown Setting it lower than 100 will be a percentage.
core=normal
cycles=3000
cycleup=500
cycledown=20
3. Change cycles to 10000 like I did.
4. Play now or keep reading to see some more tweaks I've done......
5. Noone enjoys playing in a box, even if that is what its called
fullscreen=false
becomes
fullscreen=true
6. Bump DOSbox's allocated memory from 16MB to the max of 63MB
memsize=16
becomes
memsize=63
Happy constructing
If you experience lag problems using dosbox, which i did, you can speed up the fps using ctrl+F12, you'll see on the title bar of dosbox how quick you made it, 12000 works well, and i use crtl+8 for frameskip and set that to 3.. goodluck!
So, thanks to those two guys!
Even with this, the game crashed when it tried to play the "winning" movie, but from that I remember, it wasn't that interesting anyway.
Thanks to the Abandonia folks for having this game around. I've got 3 copies of the game sitting around somewhere (Original shortly after it was released, Bargin Bin Windows 95 version and a PSX version I got as a gift) but I just couldn't get the Win95 version to work on my PC.

Since you're in the game and fiddling with the options, I assume it's starting up okay and running alright.
Basically, to keep the bandwidth demands down the Opening Sequence, Lose Movie and Win Movie have been cut from the game. You're probably seeing those messages when you either win the game (Based on the win conditions you chose at the start) or you lose.
(You can lose by accumulating 100 black marks by failing to address tenant complaints, failing to complete special council missions or from having your homebase destroyed by gangsters.)
The game would have ended itself if the win or lose movie played, so you're not missing out on gamplay either way.
I think you can find all three movies (intro, win, lose) on YouTube, if you're desperate to see them.
CONSTRUCTR1
29-08-2008, 06:48 PM
The videos that show at the start of Constructor, when you lose or when you win.
These were located in a folder called WINDATA in the Constructor game folder (when installed from CD) and on the CD.
CONINTRO.AVI
CONLOSE.AVI
CONWIN.AVI
Constructor AVIs (http://files.filefront.com/CONSTRUCTORAVIs7z/;11641302;/fileinfo.html)
CONSTRUCTR1
01-09-2008, 07:10 PM
DATA.FIL file located in FLICS folder on CD and in Constructor game folder when installed from CD.
Extract FLICS folder to Constructor game folder, default:
C:/ACCLAIM/CN
Contains all the video animations. Includes intro, win and lose videos within DATA.FIL.
You can now select Display All Video Animations : YES
CONSTRUCTOR FLICS DATA.FIL (http://files.filefront.com/CONSTRUCTORFLICSDATAFIL7z/;11668914;/fileinfo.html)

I've just been recently playing around with this game... There are a few "must do" things before you can go to the next level, but all in all, the game is pretty intuitive (P.S.: be sure to indicate if "unplayable" refers to gameplay or tech issues! ;) ).
Actually, I find this like many of the "Sim" games from Maxis. Doesn't have a huge learning curve but for the things needed to make "next level" items, like tennants, etc. In fact, I find it has the hallmark of most games that I admire/enjoy; that it frustrates you just enough to make you want to keep going =P
I've run into a couple of bugs though: One is that at the point where you seem to fail hard enough to lose, it tries to start an animation that makes the game crash back to DOSBox, and second, the factory that makes things like trees, computers, double glazing... doesn't seem to want to deliver, even though it appears that it should.
Edit: Ok, I found how to get the double glazing (and other gadgets) installed for the tennants... Apparently, you can get them to pick it up themselves! Click on the house that needs the gadget, select the gadget screen, select the gaget to be installed and hit the "sell" button... the tenant wil go to the gadget factory and pick it up.

The videos that show at the start of Constructor, when you lose or when you win.
These were located in a folder called WINDATA in the Constructor game folder (when installed from CD) and on the CD.
CONINTRO.AVI
CONLOSE.AVI
CONWIN.AVI
Constructor AVIs
(http://files.filefront.com/CONSTRUCTORAVIs7z/;11641302;/fileinfo.html)
DATA.FIL file located in FLICS folder on CD and in Constructor game folder when installed from CD.
Extract FLICS folder to Constructor game folder, default:
C:/ACCLAIM/CN
Contains all the video animations. Includes intro, win and lose videos within DATA.FIL.
You can now select Display All Video Animations : YES
CONSTRUCTOR FLICS DATA.FIL

I know this is kinda old. But i loved this game so i've been trying to play in on windows XP. (What an headache to make it work >.<!! )
I used dosbox and started playing. But everytime i do something, an error comes up something like "Unable to spool file ..."
A few hours ago i found the solution in a brazilian forum here: http://www.600ml.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=11941
Just needed to download those two files :
Parte1 - http://www.mediafire.com/?ditfyw0u0fd
Parte2 - http://www.mediafire.com/?bzgoxyyxczn
Unzip them and then add them to the FLICS file in the Constructor File. Works Perfectly.
Hope it helps

the reason you got the error message is that this game is a rip and it tries to look for video animations. most of people just disabled the video animations, but having them in here is nice as well, if the size weren't this big we could put it on the main site

You probably need to switch it to a different keyboard layout or remap the inputs using its built-in remapper.

I would say Ö (Shift+ö), but when you came as far as when you need a colon, then you have your backslash at the right key, so your keyboard can't be German.

or you can simply open dosbox.conf in notepad, and add the command "keyb gr" at the end then your keyboard is switched to german

If you have any problems with the *.flc (video) files, you should just start the game, go to the Settings menu, and TURN OFF the "Display All Video Animations" option.
OR you can seek for the video files on the internet, they've got a size of ~150mb.

Okay, I have had ALL of the issues with running the game mentioned on pages 1 through 25 or so. (I grew tired of reading mass "HALP! I CAN HAZ CONSTRAXTOR IN XP??!!" posts, so skipped the last pages)...
...but this is how I got it to work:
First of all, I have a pentium 4 2.4GHz with 1.5GB RAM, and some sort of semi-decent graphics card from 2001 or so. And I run Windows XP.
Second, I _USED_ to run win98 SE back in the day, so I still have my product key and backup of the disc.
I know my way around in DOSbox, but this game would either get choppy sound when I increased the CPU cycles too much, or it would lag terribly or hang completely when placing buildings over large areas when I decreased the CPU cycles to where the sound would be acceptable (but still choppy).
I simply downloaded the microsoft virtual machine trial (google it) and set up a win98 virtual, then installed from my CD backup. Shared my oldgames folder on the network, and made sure the virtual machine was in the same workgroup.
Now, I could access constructor in my virtual machine window, and simply double-click "game.exe" to run the game without lag, and with perfect sound!
The game still crashed the first time I tried, but setting "display all video animations" to "no" in the game options seems to have resolved this completely, as I have now built my brick yard, and still haven't had problems.
--- See below for gameplay hints that I remember from playing before ---

Okay, so you're having gameplay trouble? Read on.
Starting out, it's good to disable the computer opponent, so that you can learn the build order, and how to get around to do stuff in the game. This will disable some missions, like the "get rid of troublesome tenant at blablabla estate". (That can be resolved by having a foreman take over his house, BUT! That will lead to enemy foremen constantly bugging you trying to return the favour.)
Now, to start out, you just build the wood yard, as close as possible to your HQ. It can be good to add a little extra space inside the fences to put a dog house there later. (Dogs chase away enemy foremen trying to take over your factory). You will have two foremen, each with 3 workers assigned to him. To assign the two additional workers you have, select one of the foremen, and add the workers with no "[ ]" on them, then select the "reunite team" button.
When the wood yard is completed, build one house of each kind available to you, but leave space for the cement yard on that same estate. (This will save you time when the three residents on that estate starts complaining about noise; you just move the team in one factory to the other factory, which leads to a short, but adequate pause in the noise).
Rent the houses to the "wife abuser" couples (these pay less, but make kids faster). Have one couple producing lvl 1 tenants, and the other two produce workers. If you feel it's taking too long, upgrade their bedrooms.
When your cement yard is complete, immediately buy another estate (preferrably close to your starting one), and build one of each new house. Don't bother with giving them any space, because you'll sell them as soon as you have your brick yard. When the brick yard is available, build it on the same estate, and sell the lvl 2 houses. You only got the brick yard to gain access to building a school anyway.
When you have the school (on that same estate), use ALL of the remaining space there to build a final lvl 1 house. That should make for a pretty huge garden for that house. Fully upgrade the bedroom, and have that lvl 1 couple start producing lvl 2 tenants. You'll need a lot of them. If you lack funds, then build lvl 2 houses and sell them right away. They'll get blown up anyway, so you don't loose estate space.
When you have messed around a little in the game (built a gadget factory, and got your residents set up with trees and other stuff they might demand), buy a large piece of land. This will be your milk cow for the rest of the game. Set it up as follows:
One BIG lvl 2 house in the middle, with TWO of the smaller lvl 2 houses on each side. In the middle one, place a "hippie" couple. In all of the other four, place punks. Give the hippies a hedge (they'll demand one pretty fast if you don't) and the punks their white picket fences. Have the hippies make police cadets, or have them make lvl 3 tenants for later use. The punks should ALL be set to pay rent.
This will very soon lead to the punks growing angry with the hippies hedge. They'll demand drastically lowered rates, or else they'll give you 100 black marks (bad). However, solving this situation will reward you with 20 white marks (good), and multiply that with four punk couples, that's 80 white marks... each month or so! 100 white marks can be cashed in for 10 000$.
So now, all you have to do is: When the punks complain, go to their house (you can do that from the complaint letter) and switch them to making a kid instead of paying rent. They'll stop complaining, so now you can switch them right back to paying rent, which will lead to another complaint next month. Rinse and repeat with all of them, and you'll be set with money for the rest of the game. Black marks aren't a problem either, since white marks will cancel them.
-----
That's how far I've gotten yet. A few tips:
- Police cadets can be set to patrol enemy territory. Right outside an enemy pawn shop, for instance. (Solves the enemy thief mission).
- Some gadgets in the gadget factory requires you to upgrade your wood/cement/brick/etc yards to factories.
- Some gadgets can be collected by the tenants themselves (double glasses, alarms, etc) which saves time for your delivery guy, of which you'll only ever have ONE.
- You can set up more than one hippie/punk estates if you like to keep busy, and could use a lot of cash
- Don't buy ANYTHING to tenants unless they require it in written form. I once bought a garden gnome to one of four tenants in a lvl 4 tenant estate, and INSTANTLY got four complaints. Three couples wondered why their neighbour had gotten something THEY didn't get, and the last one wanted that ugly gnome removed...
- When the park mission arrives, make SURE you manufacture the pond and the trees right away, but before placing them, make SURE to put a subway entrance right on the entrance to the park FIRST. This will save a lot of time for the delivery dude.
- Make sure to have around 4-6 of each lvl tenant in your HQ at all times. Not more than that, since it will lead to overcrowding missions, but preferrably not less, because tenants die from time to time, and if you can't refill their houses, they'll get infested.
- Repair guys will NOT repair non-residental buildings when set to auto-repair. You have to turn it off, and manually order them to the building that needs repair.
- Gangsters gain new weapons from killing stuff. Build a hospital to heal them up faster, and watch over them. If they kill a building, make sure to get them out of there before the building blows up, else they die in the explosion.
Hope I helped :)

I use DosBox 0.72 to run Constructor, turn off "Display All Video" option and the game works pretty good.
However, some times Constructor crashes and shows this annoying message:
Error = Unable to find movie file
I know that the reason is some files in FLIC folder are missing. I've read this topic, and found some links to download them but unluckily, links were dead.
Please show me how to find those files on the Internet.

That happens to me as well on occassion but this is the only trace I could find of it happening to anyone else on the internet! Sometimes it is because there is something on it's way to the house (normally a psycho) and they won't build until he has been and gone. Sadly though it sometime has no clear reason and the only thing you can do is sell the house. This is a real pain, espcially in the sort of mid-game stages when all the estates are full and you can't just rebuild. So I say glitch / bug with no clear fix.
And to set the function keys to groups, select who you want in your group, hold CTRL and push the key. If you are using DOSBOX you'll need to change the key map, infact if you want to make life a little easier you can remap the function keys to CTRL and the key to save holding CTRL and then remap the normal numbers to the function keys so you can use F1 to assign a group and 1 to select it ;) I'd also move the arrows to ASDW and some other keys around to make life even easier (every little helps in this game!)

You have to click on the house and fix it manually . This will cost you money but its the only way to fix the house . Get police on the estate .

I can't believe I can help with that, as he could have discovered the answer months ago, but as how I got problems with the Park mission, I'll help.
I was playing it once and I got there. You have to place 3 houses (or as many it asks) for level 5 tenants (the level is the tenants level) and do what the mission says, be sure to get a big space to it as you'll need it for the outside furniture. Remember to put them INSIDE THE HOUSE! They must be living there. And take a look if it's not asking for a specific space, like the Park mission. For me it worked, some minutes later I got squashed by the computer AI, but I think I forgot to protect some things...
