because it has another name... here, Tom's oldwarez list (http://www.abandonia.com/main.php?nav=awlist&Page=2&country=en), it is known as "Exploration" and here it is at Mobygames (http://www.mobygames.com/game/exploration)

If you have it, you can propose it! :ok:

I downloaded the game from HOTU (blergh, 14 mb, 5kb/s) and it is a CD rip. I feel like a complete noob, but I don't know how to make the game work.

I just opened one of the RARs, and found an installation tool. After installation, this appeared:
http://img342.imageshack.us/img342/8483/exp21uk.jpg
'Great!', I thought. So I started DOSBox.
http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/5749/exp36zw.jpg
Of course, I already did that beforehand, but I gave it another try. Same result.
Now, I know there is a trick to for faking CD-roms (something with mount -t cdrom or something) but what exactly should I mount like that?

Thank you.

Hi,

some days days ago it came over me and i had to play again all the nice games from my youth.
But then "hey wasnt there some nice old trading game called something with columbus?"
And i started to search, and search, and search all over again because i could find the real name of the game.

Then i stumbled over this site and had a search in the forum and tätärätä! There it was: Christoph Kolumbus!

Oh how i played this game!

But then... where the hell can i get it.

And started searching all over again :)

So if somebody has any idea where to get it or if you could add it to your site i would be so thankfull!

(Hopefully it is possible to put it on the site since i dont know if its abandonware or if somebody still seels it, i couldnt find any site where to buy it :( )

Edit: Of course i will also write a review (in english and german)

Hi everybody, once I had a game that was called in German "Kolumbus". Since I cannot find it anymore I wanted to check the abandonware sites. Still, I could not find it. Here is my question: Is it possible to get the game here on this site? I would be really happy about it ;).

There were three previous requests for this game, all approved. Not sure if anyone's reviewing it, though.

Edit: Merged all four requests into a single topic.

It's not Sid Maier's Colonization! :)

You start off with just a capitol city in one of the four to five playable colonial powers (England, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands) and everything else is uncharted. I think that the map is not realistic (I seem to remember thinking that this is a good thing since you didnt know where to explore).

There are two views: Capital view and Explore view.

In the Capital view you see a street with buildings in it which you click to enter, and a dock next to the street. If you click on a tavern you can recruit sailors or get some info from spies (sort of like High seas trader). There was this school or smt like that where you could opt for investing money into new ship or new weapon design, and eventually you would get it. You could also hire mercenary troops (soldiers which differ from sailing crew). If you click on a ship in dock you can fit her with cannons and stuff. This view is static and hand drawn.

The Explore view is isometric, semi birds-eye view. When you sail, you have to have water and food, or else your crew can get sick or mutiny or die. You can also get into rough seas or get some desease on the ship. The merceneries can be dispatched into new continets when you find them. There are several resources in the game: Gold, Silver, Tobaco, Cotton, Trinkets (which you can offer to indians). The colonies have limited storage space (which you expand by building warehouses) so you have to keep emptying them with your ships, and selling the stuff back home.

The game starts in 1492 (I think) ends at a specific year (not sure which one).

Please help me identify this game!

One more thing, by the graphics, I would put it in the 1994-1999 period, and it is NOT described already in abandonia (I checked all the strategy games, all the simulations, and all the "simmilar games" of games that are simmilar).

Nope.. Imperialism has better graphics for one thing... for another the map is totally uncharted except your home port when you start (not the case in Imperialism). I had very little fights with my opponents in the Old World, if any. Most or all fights were for new colonies since it was tough finding the others and the port cities (the only cities you had, so if you were England you had just London and no other cities) are heavily defended.

While searching the Internet I ran into Sid Meier's Civilization (not Colonization since you said that wasn't it), FreeCol, and FreeCiv. Are these the ones if not I am going into the Internet Galaxy another time to find the unknown entity that you are looking for. :)

At long last! I am reunited with my game! It was just like... a streak of genious... I was searching ANYTHING that has to do with the game, so I thought I try here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Trade_simulation_games

Surely enough I opened a few games that might be what I'm looking for based on the title. I was browsing through the page and opening links in new tabs, and there was "Voyage Century Online"... It's a MMO, definitely what I was looking for, but then something just snapped... I KNEW the word "Voyage" was in the title of the game, I just knew it... I couldn't remember for weeks now, but upon seeing it, I was sure as I am standing here that the word was in the game's name.

And just like that, the full name popped into my head "Voyages of Discovery"!!! A bit of googling and a few clicks later I was reunited with my beloved childhood memory! THIS IS WHY Abandonia and other sites MUST exist, and why we need Abandonware... If it weren't for someone else descrbing the game and hosting it, this gem might have been lost for ever... Man... I'm so happy now I'm besides myself!

Thank you all who helped!

It's a cool colonisation themed managerial strategy game. When I was trying to find out the game's name in the forum, people seemed interested yet unaware of the game. It also goes by the name Exploration (two names probably have to do with multiple markets the game was sold in).

It was published by a Microprose subsidiary - Interactive magic, I would say no later than 1996-ish.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MicroProse

The game absolutely cannot be bought, at least not the ways I tried to find it. Please add it to abandonia!

Is there any possibility of getting Voyages of Discovery added to the site? It was released back in 1994/1995 but it is much easier to find the German edition (Christoph Kolumbus) than the UK/European edition (Voyages of Discovery).

There is a US version released with the name Exploration but subsequent releases (which were on CD) had modifications to the game engine such as the ability to choose specific maps rather than being them randomised, ships started with certain goods on board and some cannons, etc. These were not features of the original game.

There are copies of the original version of Voyages of Discovery kicking around on the internet but all of them have problems with the cursor not showing when you attempt to play. I assume this is because it is a bad rip and not because of a bug in the original game.

There was an approved topic but the last update was a long time ago and I don't really want to bump it to the top of the list. Topic for reference:

http://www.abandonia.com/vbullet/showthread.php?t=20830&page=4&highlight=Voyages+Discovery

Anyway, I hope someone can help. Finding an original copy of the original Voyages of Discovery as it was released for the PC in the European market would be amazing.
