I'm not aiming to create huge, comprehensive lists like those that can be found at Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_commercial_games_released_as_freeware), Liberated Games (http://liberatedgames.com/) or Remain in Play (http://www.remaininplay.com/), rather, just to document the various (and sometimes rather obscure) free and/or liberated game findings that could be of certain interest :)

Iron Seed
This rather unusual sci-fi strategy game that had originally been released as shareware can be found at the official website of the original developers, who are now working on a remake:

Theseus - Return of the Hero
A follow-up of Alien Shooter (http://www.mobygames.com/game/alien-shooter) with a different protagonist, and running on the same engine. The game was released for free by Sigma Team at some point, and is available from their website:

Legend of the Silver Talisman
Originally a shareware game inspired by Gauntlet (http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/gauntlet), the full version of the Legend of the Silver Talisman was eventually released as freeware by the developers.

Perihelion
Edvard Toth, author of the Amiga role-playing game Perihelion (http://www.mobygames.com/game/perihelion), has been very kind to distribute the full version at his website (http://edvardtoth.com/games/perihelion/). With the original publisher no longer existing, this is the closest thing to an official liberated release of the game.

The download comes with a preconfigured Windows emulator.

Amulets & Armor (http://www.mobygames.com/game/amulets-armor) is now officially free (http://amuletsandarmor.com/download.htm).

Tiger's Bane (http://www.longbowgames.com/tigersbane/) by Longbow Digital Arts.
http://www.longbowgames.com/tigersbane/screenshots/Bane1.gif
Tiger's Bane is a hybrid of the shoot-em-up and simulation genres, combining side scrolling action with realistic elements such as limited ammunition, accurate modelling of weapons and their effects, flight dynamics that take inertia and wind into consideration, and a wide array of real battlefield machinery to fly, destroy, and protect.

Somehow it doesn't seem to be widely known that the registered version of LineWars II (http://www.mobygames.com/game/linewars-2) is available as a free download from the website of its creator, Patrick Aalto:

Helherron (http://www.mobygames.com/game/helherron), a classic style shareware RPG by Antti Kuukka, had been released as freeware in March 2006. The official website is down, but there's a functional archived copy (http://web.archive.org/web/20071213145721/http://www2.lut.fi/~akuukka/helherron/main.htm) where the latest, free version of the game (v2.04) is available:

Just found this really huge blog dedicated to liberated games:
http://juegosliberados.blogspot.com/

It's in either Spanish or Portuguese (can't tell because I'm not very familiar with both languages), but everything is pretty self-explanatory. The blog seems to feature quite a few really obscure games too.

I figured the blog is in Spanish (since it has links to Spanish Wikipedia). Here's some of the interesting games from the database that caught my attention:
Tecno - The Base (http://www.tecno-base.com/) - a futuristic FPS made in the early 2000s style, although apparently it was released much later than that.
PaybackTime 2 (http://rflxn.com/pt2/) - an obvious X-COM clone, which was distributed as shareware in the nineties (here's their home page (http://web.archive.org/web/19981203041908/http://tahna.tky.hut.fi/pt2/pt2.html) from back then), released for free in 2011.
Cosmos Quest (http://www.cosmos-quest.com/downloads.html) series, obviously inspired by Sierra's Space Quest games.
StarFight (http://www.jpproduction.fi/games/sf5/) series shmups.
A huge number of games produced by the German developer Motelsoft (http://www.motelsoft.de/downloadfeng.html), ranging from Amiga and DOS adventure and RPG games to Windows FPS titles.

Added SideLine (http://sideline.ghegs.com/) to the list.

Meanwhile I put together a small list of liberated PC games (with a handful of non-PC titles) as an OpenDocument spreadsheet. The list can be sorted by platform, year of release, genre, original distribution model, source code license (if available), programming language, engine, and includes working download links. A separate page lists the sources that I used when compiling the list.

The games I omitted from the list are temporary Sierra giveaways from the early 2000s, Cinemaware and Rockstar games (I think in both cases these are no longer freeware in any form), and multiplayer-only titles. Also, apart from directly liberated games I've included a small numbers of unofficial conversions and remakes that have been retroactively authorised by game owners, in the absence of the respective original games being freeware. There are over 400 games on the list.
