all time classic!
good on the amiga (amiga has super smooth hardware scrolling) but the pc version is perfectly fine.

be careful what you wish for, with plots... see 'arkanoid' for a "plot" on a bat and ball brick game..........

I'm the editor and the person who made the update. The game deserves a 4 (it says so in the review also), but there was a slight error in the update (so it says the rating is 1). It should be 4! Unfortunately I am not able to correct this (maybe Kosta - he's the owner of the site can - admins, mods and updaters can't). I hope this will be corrected shortly.

Hi! I dont know why this game has got such a poor rating as it is pretty awesome. It provides sheer keyboard busting entertainment and is one of the best pinball games I have played.

I can't seem to get sound working on Dosbox. The music works fine, but I get no sound effects.

This game remains my favourite pinball game of all time though, if only for nostalgic reasons.

Yes, it is a mistake. It's one that's not difficoult to solve (I was told), but I haven't the authorisation to do it.

The game has a rating of 4!

I am having the same problems with unzipping the file.

It says "file skipped unknown compression method".

Any hints?

You must use the WinZip... The programe that comes in the WinXP package doesn't work. Don't know why...

You can get WinZip HERE (http://www.winzip.com/).

It's because a certain compression method in zip is patented, and the patent holder doesn't like anyone using it. Only old versions of pkzip and WinZip support this patented form of compression.

Yeah.. There's no other option; I'm running it under Linux. The sounds in Pinball Dreams, for instance, work fine, for instance, just not in Pinball Fantasies. The music works great, just no sound effect such as the flippers or the ball falling into place at the start.

But it's not the end of the world

 I used 7Zip to pack it. Quite recent version.

Oh, and Total Commander does not have any problems reading this type of Zip compression and unpacking it... try that.

PS. Pinball Illusions is much better then that one!

My mistake!

I misread "file skipped unknown compression method" as "`shrink' method not supported", which is a frequent error with old (>10 years) zip files.

LOL!!! Sorry to say this guys, but you all suck at pinballs, right? :P :P

My personal record in Stone N' Bones is about 36 Billion. To be exact it's 35.923.742.400

Also in "Billion dollars" it's about 1.2 billion, but I've lost that record :(

In "Speed devils" it's 466.170.670

And I don't like "Party Land" :P

Archive from Horseman = standard WinXP ZIP packer is useless. Use PROPER software, like WinRAR/WinZIP/7-ZIP.

The review has DOS & DosBox compatibility icons.
Note, that when we use the term DosBox here, we don't mean the Windows' so-called "dosbox" (which is often called command line around these parts), but DosBox, the DOS emulator (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/download.php?main=1).

I think this is the best pinball game ever made.. and yes better then Pinball Illusions..

The problem with Pinball Illusion is that the ball lives its own life... and its much easier to loose the ball in Illusions (maby good for quick rounds).. so i would say Fantasies is much better.
And two tumbs up for the music =)

My favourite board is Stones and Bones. But my highscore is only about 500.000.000. How should one get as much as 36.000.000.000? The different scores I have found are:

Skill shot, increasing every new ball.
Open the tower for different scores, 1 million, 5 million, double bonus and hold bonus.
Light all lamps to get 5 million
tower hunt, go up in the tower.
extra ball
ten million
ghost hunt, get jackpot and super jackpot
some sort of lock to get up to 20 million in the scream-loop.
15 million
grim reaper with jackpot and as many loops as possible.

Then there is loop combo.
Million plus, double scream, loop combo and x2, ....
The vault and treasure.
Extra ball and five million every 10:th scream.
Million if you loop araound in the big loop.

Are there any more? (maybe I have forgotten some).

What strategy should I use to get high score?

I have the same problem, unfortunately, with VDMsound, and in Dosbox, it goes incredibly slow and doesn't have any music or sound.

The Fifth Horseman

I'm afraid the fault is yours - ie both of you are doing something wrong.
Refer here (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php)? for an extensive FAQ on DosBox, and here especially (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?page=Basic+Setup+and+Installation+of+Dos Box) for basic instructions.

Also, AFAIK this game is completely incompatibile with Windows - so VDMSound is not likely to give any positive results.

The first one of you says the game doesn't run "with DosBox or without". Well, try running the game THROUGH DosBox, as this emulator does not run automatically.
The second of you, try increasing the cyclecount and changing the emulated soundcard to Sound Blaster Pro 2 (SBPRO2).

And if you don't know how to, the FAQ I've linked to has all of that covered.

That is what I meant with what I said. The game doesn't run in Windows mode and it doesn't run through DosBox. I also tried tweaking the settings dosbox runs in, but nothing seems to help. Not even the newest 0.65 version (which helped me run so many oldies *SNIFF!!!*) helps.

Finally works!

Never mind the config file, it's ok. Turns out the game config file was corrupt, probably by a bad download. For some reason Setsound couldn't overwrite it either. I manually rewrote the config file, then setsound ran ok, and now the game works. :max:

Never could and still can't decide whether I like Speed Devils or Stones'n'Bones more... :bleh:

What I notice first is that you have set the cycles to 30000. Are you certain your machine can handle that?
Overclocking DosBox can lead to numerous negative consequences, remember. What is the CPU power of the machine you are using to run DosBox?

sbtype=sb16
Try sbtype=sbpro2 - that's Sound Blaster Pro 2, seems to work with more games.

mount c c:\ -freesize 1024
OK, so here is something that might be somewhat important. You are mounting entire drive C.
Where did you put the games? Somwhere in "My Documents", I presume?
That might cause some trouble.
Create a dedicated directory to put your DOS games in - like C:\Dosgames - and mount that directory instead of the entire drive.
Also, -freesize 1024 seems a bit excessive and might (just might) be the cause of the problem (sometimes software crashes when it "sees" disk space exceeding the hard-coded limits). Try -freesize 256.

+EDIT+
Whoops, I was typing this post while your second came in. Glad to hear you solved your problems.

[/b]

That cyclecount is about 90% of my CPU power. It's the setting I use for my most power hungry games. I start at that since it's faster to cycle down in dosbox than cycle up. A few clicks gives me max performance with any game. Yeah, I've tweaked the settings to my liking a lot. :ok:

I finally decided which table I like the most: Stones'n'Bones. It's because of the music when you get a high score! :max:

The Fifth Horseman
03-08-2006, 11:48 AM
If your CPU can handle that high cycles and you are running some power-heavy games, you might like to try changing core=normal to core=dynamic.

That might decrease the stability a notch - some games might refuse to start in this mode, and in some rare cases a crash might occur when playing - but your machine will be able to handle much higher cyclecount - up to twice the current amount, sometimes even more.

A secret unreveled: Open the tower at least up to hold bonus. Combine this with multiplying the bonus by first shooting the ball up the ramp and then into the well will give you x2 x4...x10 bonus. Now u do the math!! [after some balls with hold bonus and 10x10x10x10x10 or somewhat bonus. Actually this multiplier is 20 as u double bonus at the tower before u get hold bonus, etc...] Get some extra balls as well and ur the Man!

edit: Just looked up my highscore, it was: 596.996.707.690 [achieved back in 1998]

ps: i used to put the nerve wrecking in-game-music off and listened to own music instead ;)

Well you could always forge that high score :P But hell yeah, hold+ double+ 10x bonus, then next round do the same, get some grim reapers, score high, multiply by 100x :D Possible probably, but u guys are geeks :D

I know my father got something above billion probably - but then he had to quit heh, mother was running nuts since game went on for so long. I've never been an expert but I like the game nontheless.

Had some problems with dosbox tho. I had to set cycles to 8000 (below 10k). If I set above 10k menu would not show. Then after I get the main menu I can set cycles to 12k as I usually have.

Oh and about settings - try F5 in main menu.

The Fifth Horseman

Open Dosbox.conf and change the line that says fullscreen=false to fullscreen=true. This will start DosBox in fullscreen mode.

Guest
15-01-2007, 10:34 AM
i tried that, but now the game crashed immediately when i started it.

when the fullscreen= is false, i go to some playing table in the pinball and then i press alt+enter: the game works in fullscreen, but when i go back to game's menu, it crashes. i think i know why it happens: without fullscreen, the dosbox window changes it's size when going menu from a table. i'm not sure would i work if i use fullscreen only while playing, and then change it to window when going in the menu.

so does this game work in fullscreen for others here?

sorry my weak english skills.

This situation is unusual at the very least. You see, DosBox should not have any such problems with this game.

One thing I could try advising right here and now is that you re-download the game and try your luck with the redownloaded copy.

This game remains my favourite pinball game of all time though, if only for nostalgic reasons.
if you have XP you need to DL VDM sound
[/b]

What is DL VDM sound? When I started setsound.exe i couldn't choose that..

the game doesn't work for me :( How will i get it to run? please help me..

If I got a penny for every time I had to answer this question I'd be filthy rich by now. The answer is always the same:
Use DosBox (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net). Or VDMSound. Whichever works better on your system.
You can get them from our programs page (http://www.abandonia.com/main.php?nav=programs).

Before you start complaining about being unable to use them, make sure you read the readme files and check for appropriate FAQ's in Troubleshooting (http://www.abandonia.com/forum/index.php?showforum=2) and Troubleshooting Archive (http://www.abandonia.com/forum/index.php?showforum=25) forums.

thank you.. now it's working.. but it's to fast.. how do you do to slow done the ball??

Scatty
18-01-2007, 10:45 PM
Well it's actually Pinball, the ball is supposed to be fast you know ;)
Eventually though, if you run the game in DowBox, pressing CTRL+F11 few times until you slowed it down enough might help a little to be able to follow the ball better.

I know it's pinball.. but you should be able to see the ball not just a line and then you're game over..

i will try ctrl+f11 thank you :)

hy!

my father is a big pinball fan, but he didnt play it for a while.
now he asked me to run the game for him, but i couldnt manage it to run perfectly. the game starts normally, but the ball sometimes becomes crappy, how to say that... defective, gappy. and thats so annoying.
in window mode and in full screen either. even the music and sounds works fine, but just this little thing..
i dont think that the game is corrupt, because when i start it from native dos mode (with windows 98 system floppy) the game is OK. but if i run pinball this way, the sound isnt working (dos says not enough memory) :(

should a right dosbox configuration solve the problem?
i am using windows xp, on a cel 800 with 300 mb ram.

Hey, I got a problem when I'm running the game on DosBox. The game runs okay, but when I start playing, when the texts below should change (when you score, get a bonus...), there just reads "Pinball Fantasies" all the time. It doesn't change and when I lose a ball, the game freezes. So what's up with it?
E: Never mind. Solved it out myself :)

Hey There,

I am new at this whole DOSBox thing, so please forgive me if you have answered this question a million times before.

When I try to run setsound.exe I get a red error box saying Error! Drivers not found. Please reinstall program.

Is there something I am missing in the Setup?

Cause the sound is all scratchy without it, and the evil tunes of Stone's n bones bring back joyful childhood memories... :-)

You don't need to change the setting, you just need to speed up the emulation (pressing ctrl + F12 a few times) up to some 9000-12000 cycles.

could be a bug that daniel (one of the programmers) did make - he used some flag from an operation to detect a hit on bumpers - but it showed out that setting the flag was undocumented and did not work on all computers... i'm not sure if the bug came out or was fixed before release... /Johan (i'm another one of the of the programmers, have not played the game for like 7 years or so, just downloading dosbox and a cracked copy of the game to try out tonight... :)

_r.u.s.s.

you miss virtual drive letter=)
if your pinbal is in "h:\pikkupelit\pinball\pinball", then type:

mount c h:\pikkupelit\pinball\pinball

now "h:\pikkupelit\pinball\pinball" becomes C drive, so just type
C:
and you get in to the directory

when i have installed the DOSbox in my computer i ran it and then i typed intro and i read the text. Next i typed Mount c h:\pikkupelit\pinball\pinball and it not works. *meep*!

files:

H:\pikkupelit (there pinball is)
c:\ (windows is there)
z:\ (DOSBox original rom)

Are you sure that you are running DosBox emulator which you have downloaded and not the Windows' command line utility?

_r.u.s.s.

dosbox also types which command was illegal,
for example:
illegal command: munt.
illegal command: randomcrap.
illegal command: i made a typo and dont want to admit it.

type the whole message with ALL the spaces and dots and everything

The Fifth Horseman

*Sigh*

Since the name a standard keyboard connector doesn't seem to ring a bell, I take it your experience with computers is fairly limited?

PS/2 is a type of connector commonly used for keyboards. Nowadays the USB keyboards begin dominating the market, but PS/2 ones are not difficult to find (just ask at your local computer store) and are still widely used. Most new motherboards still have PS/2 keyboard and mouse ports.

A dummy's guide to changing your keyboard to a PS/2 one:
1. Turn off the computer.
2. Unplug the wireless module of your current keyboard from the USB port.
3. Locate a purple PS/2 port on the back of the computer's case. It looks like the one here (http://pinouts.ru/Inputs/KeyboardPC6_pinout.shtml)
4. Plug in the PS/2 keyboard.

This is an all-time classic , Great Intro Music , Super play , and yes I got pretty sick sometimes losing the ball ;)

One must not forget that the hardware used in those days were not all that great compared to today.
I had an Amiga with 2 Mb Fast and 2 Mb slow memory , but the program was written even for an Amiga 500 with only 512 Kb.
So remember when you hear the Great !!!! Intro and sounds ( 4 channel audio , 3 music and 1 effect ) and see the smoothness of screenscroll ( Amiga ) , its al written for 512 Kb !!! , and that is some programming if you ask me , compared to the 4 Gb installed in my pc today.

Personally I played this game a lot on an Amiga 500 ( original release ) , and later on pc but i must say that the Amiga version runs smoother than the DOS version , I still sometimes play this game ( when i am in a nostalgic mood ) , but not in a dosbox , but rather with WinUae ( Amiga Emulator )

My rating for this game would be a 5 ( original release on Amiga ) and a 4 for the pc version.

p.s. playback the intro of this game for a old amiga owner and i think 75 % or more will tell you the name of the game.
