 I have the same problem.
I tweaked DosBox as much as I could but it cannot play. It loads the game just for a sec and then DosBox closes. Also with VDM the same happens as with the others.
The screen freezes and an annoying sound plays all the time, just after an alien welcomes me in the very beginning of the game.

VDMSound would have that annoying screeching sound... That's because you actually get the PC speaker sound. That one is :not_ok:
But I have no idea what could be wrong with DOSBox. When I run this game it worked like a charm (no changes, no setups - just run in and enjoy).
So maybe I have a different DOSBox version.
I use DOSBox 6.3
And I've turned of the GUS, so I only use the SB.
There's a line GUS=TRUE and I changed it to GUS=FALSE.
Try it. Works for me (although I didn't even realise that it doesn't work by just running it in DOSBox).

Oddly enough, that annoying eeeeeeeeeeee sound is actually supposed to sound just like that. It's a mock of the static between communication devices.
Mine worked fine in a several month old download of DOSbox, though, completely untweaked.
That aside, I used to love this game but always had problems getting it to work. It's actually the reason I starting hanging around abandonware sites.

I had the same problem when first trying out VDMSound. Then I tryied DOSBox 0.63 and not only the game ran faster and smooter at only 3000 cycles (my default) but the sound bug wasn't present. I think the "bug" occur when Hal9000 begin to talk at the beginning of the mission.
This game in itself is fine but it took me 3 complete missions to realise that I had to fill a warrant myself before trying to arrest the suspect... A nice learning game but it really get repetitive after a short while. That's why I would rate it at 3 instead of 4.

Yes, the game does get repetitive, but the best way to make the knowladge stick/stay is to repeat over and over again. Thus I don't find this to be a flaw in the game.

When I run this game under Windows 98, I see the Broderbund logo, but after that, it freezes. What's wrong?

the same thing happened to me

Okay, I've found out that if I click through the logo before it finishes, then click through the next part before it finishes, the rest of the game runs without any problems.

Okay, I have another question. How do you properly exit the game? I can't find an exit anywhere.

Never mind, I found it, under VAL 9000's options.

This is how I got it working:
Download DOSBox (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/download.php?main=1) (v0.63 at this point).
Open a DOSBox session with the included DOSBox settings.
Run Carmen's Setup.
Select Sound Blaster Pro for Sound Device. The correct settings will then appear (200h/7/1). Press Enter to accept them.
Do the same for Music Synthesizer.
Save and exit.
Run Carmen.
Works like a charm for me -- I love this game!

Ctrl+Q is a quicker way to 'properly' exit the game.

SB32/AWE32 is better.

I tried the steps you suggested but not go.
Under soundblaster pro there was only the option of 220 or 240.
Any suggestions?
I haved tried to run the game on a P450 and an XP with similar results ie no sound 'cept the chirping of the internal speakers if I leave that as the sound option!
Thanks!

Hello, does anybody know if there's an ending to this game? I've been playing it for hours and hours and have about 130 solved cases, but it seems to go on endlessly. One time I captured big boss Carmen herself (somewhere around 40 solved cases), and I thought that would be the end, apparently not. Thanks in advance!

as far as i know the carmen series are in fact endless... but who knows, maybe when you reach your 666th case, the space devil is able to steal the gallactic pope... haha. ;)

I'm starting to fear that you may be right, that the Carmen series are endless indeed. That would be a real bummer, a game without an end...

Hi!
I fiddled with the sound settings to no avail. I have Dell Pentium from 2004, most software on here is from 2002. When I start "Where in Space is Carmen San Diego" I get the logo and a voice talking. If I click anything, mouse button or my space bar, I get a black screen. I get out of that by pressing Alt+Tab and closing the program with Windows. Any suggestions on how to make this go?
"Where in the World is Carmen San Diego" I played on this exact same computer with no problems, went all the way to the Hall of Fame. I hope that is a clue. Oh, I just tried "Where in America's Past is Carmen San Diego?", the game works but I tried three cases and couldn't arrest the suspect in the right place and time. I am not that good at history, really.

did you use dosbox? or just run it via pure windows

When I run it, it automatically uses the DOS Command Prompt setup. When I ran the "Where in America's Past [etc]", it asked if I wanted to quit to DOS. I tried downloading one of the DOS boxes from the website but it didn't work on my system.

After I got the hang of the weird warrant clues, this game got really addictive.

Was the sound problem ever fixed? Here it is 2012 and I have the same lockup problem after the intro screen. Would like to try this game out as I have never played it yet.
