View Full Version : Red Alert on Windows XP

well I had some spare change and decided to finally buy a new copy of red alert (my other cd is broken)
So after setting up the compatibality and everything I unstall it
everything is fine.
First problem:
I can't run the windows 95 version, whenever I try I get the following erromessage: "the procedure entry point SMapLS_IP_EBP_12 could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.DLL"
oddly enough the dos version works like a charm without even using dosbox or anything else.
Now this also means the resolution is even worse than usual.
But I can live with that (no pain no game, eh?)
now the problem is the sound.
music and movies work fine (a bit choppy the first few seconds but after that it runs smoothly)
but the voices of the units ingame are poor, very poor.
For example instead of "yes sir" I hear "ye ir"
I've tried other sounddrivers in the install, but either it doesn't find it or I don't hear any sound.
The answer would usually be simple:
run it in dosbox
or
run it with VDMsound
doesn't work
DosBox takes a long time and then I end up with a black screen.
On to VDMsound then.
It thinks a bit, then it asks me to insert the Red Alert cd (which is inside)
doesn't work.
so, what am I to do now?

Alright is a easy fix. Go to WEstwoods old ftp server (Its still up btw) and download the C&C Gold patch for windows xp. It also works for Red Alert. Put the dll file in the REDALERT folder and it will overwrite the old .dll. Then right click on RA.exe and set the compatability to Windows 95. Thats All Have Fun

The patch removes network play in this great game, and unless someone makes a IPX --> TCP/IP emulator... may great dosgames in network are lost forever.

why don't you just use Westwood Online?

That's not necessary..
All you have to do is making the setup file Win95 compatible and install the game.
Then you go to whereever you installed the game and make RA.exe Win95 compatible, that should do the trick and you'll even still be able to play over network (just don't forget to install the IPX protcol) ;)
/Laziter
doesn't work. go to ra.afraid.org and download the beta patch there that adds full compatability with windows and network play (through gamespy as well)

Sorry, you're right..
I forgot to mention that the latest official patch is needed, the beta patch is also a must if you want to play online.

Hola,
I have finally decided to install Red Alert with the expansion pack (Aftermath) onto my computer. I used to have it on my Windows 95 Emachine, but ever since we got a Gateway with Windows XP I haven't even tried to install Red Alert. I just recently got into a craze for a good RTS and C&C Generals runs too slow on my computer, so I tried to install RA. However, everytime I try I get a Setup Warning message that reads as follows:
Windows 5.1 is currently running. This version of Red Alert is a Windows 95 only product.
I click either OK or X and it closes out and will not install. I understand what you guys are doing to fix your problems (at least, I think I do), but I can't even get the directory file onto my computer because it won't allow me to install. If you have any suggestions as to what I should do, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you,
Jorge.

Yeah, I did that on my setup program (InstallShield or something like that) and tried it again, however, it did the same thing. I might to find some other compatibility issues with it or get a new setup program, but I haven't had much time lately, thanks for the input.

For RA1, C&C1 & Dune 2000 there's a different server than the default XWIS one though.
You can download an adapted (read: hex edited by me :P) XWIS tool with the IP of that other server here:
http://www.planetcnc.com/ra-tech/files/man...le=255&iType=13 (http://www.planetcnc.com/ra-tech/files/manager/detail.asp?iFile=255&iType=13)
Also, the official server is up again... though I wouldn't trust it to stay that way. Besides, it's slow as hell.

See, that's why I chose a 100% unique name from the first time I got online LOL

I do think it can run TD missions... but the RA support is still in beta stage so I doubt they already implemented RA's complex mission event trigger system.

heh, the only reason why i have a different name is because i noticed a bunch of other people using "Azazel" in games and filesharing programs, it annoyed me to the point of changing my name to this, so far no one's "stolen" it =P
*ahem*, yeah FreeC&C works with the TD missions...providing you can compile/run it, if not, youll have to wait untill A) someone else does it, B) FreeC&C is completed
now that you mention it, i dont even think TD is 100% compatible with it yet, id have to check the site again, which is too stressful for dialup =P, from the screenshots i saw, its turning out good though, the fact that you can play it at 1024x768, hehe, i cant wait.

I have a problem with RA and WinXP
While all others have problem running RA, I get a problem every time I try to install it. An error message appears:

I have a quick question on the Red Alert problems. I have Win 2000 Pro and I was wondering if there is a similar patch for my OS as there is for the Win XP? I have the CD-ROM of Red Alert and try to install it but is tells me that the game won't run on a Win 5.0 system. Thanks a lot for any help you all might be able to give me.
Thanks a lot.

I have installed this game to Windows 2000 Pro (SP4) and Windows XP Pro (SP2). Well, I did NOT install it for XP... at the time of installing, I got dual-booting system.
Here is how I did it.
1) At first I tried the autorun... no.
2) Then with all compatibility mode... no.
2.1.) Copied whole CD to HD and then tried with all compatibility mode... no.
3) I launched Windows Explorer and started to explore the RA CD...
3.1.) Found two interesting folders... SETUP and SETUP95...
3.2.) Figured out that SETUP95 is Windows version :) (no sh* Sherlock).
3.3.) Browsed to SETUP folder.
3.4.) Found two exes, SETUP and INSTALL.
3.5.) Launched SETUP.exe...
3.6.) DOS version of SETUP started...
3.7.) Did not found CD, so I swapped the CD to PRIMARY CD drive.
3.8.) Retried and SETUP started!
4) I did not choose any sound card in fear it crashes.
4.1) SETUP suggested C:\WESTWOOD\REDALERT, accepted and install started.
4.2.) Success.
4.3.) Browsed to C:\WESTWOOD\REDALERT and used RASETUP. 640x480,Backbuffer,Allow hardware filled bits.
5) Right-click and compatibility tab.
5.1) Choosed Windows 98 / ME and checked ALL compatibility checks.
5.2) Started and ... it worked!
And for Windows XP, I just created shortcut for RA95.exe and applied same compatiblity modes.

Hi
I'm still having problems with red alert. Ive got windows xp. I've used windows compatibilty on it an the cd. I've also downloaded and installed patch update version 1.08 english. This made the single player mode and skirmish work perfectly. I'm haveing trouble sorting out a lan connection. Can anyone tell me how to do it. I know red alert uses the IPX protecol and I think I've installed it onto my lan card but red alert still doesn't show me the network options menu so if I have installed everything properly it must not be detecting the IPX protecol.
Any ideas? How have you got it to work

Download this file (http://www.planetcnc.com/cnc2sw/stuff/config.rar) and unrar it in your windows\system32 folder. That fixes the problem.
See, the problem is actually that the AUTOEXEC.NT went missing for some reason. You need that file to start DOS and Win95/98 applications.
The archive also contains CONFIG.NT, since that's the second DOS config file, which also seems to have the nasty habit of disappearing.
