Anyone have the manual for this? The game asks you for manual info before you can start the game.

Shouldn't the game been cracked? Try typing something then press enter. You should be able to pass on...

For those who have the sega 16 bit version (or the arcade for that matter) you will notice that the ending is very different from this version. Check it out!

There is 1 stupid point in the game...the moment that you need to jump on a higher area...this is really frustrating (always need to do it 30 times)..

Still feels like a bug to me :not_ok:

Maybe even the best one. If younger ones don;t believe, try it on MAME, on arcade machine it should look great even now. I remember when I frist saw it. Ah, 80's, golden times for video-games and epic and space fantasys. Those wastelands, then Turtle village, then city with that big guy, ir really give you feeling of ancient history, like one gang with leader terrorise one area (like in Conan). And you don't fight 36544774 enemys, but several each day. Even now I still run it and finish it from time to time. When I was a kid, it was like a dream to finish first level with one coin. First level, man.....

Well for all of you respect-lacking-we-don't-give-a-damn about some legendary games here are some clever cheats. This game doesn't look so great on PC anyway. By the way, PC version came little later than first arcade version, even after C64 and Amiga versions. So the last level, the one inside a castle didn't existed. It was added in PC version because milions of fans who found only one thing: game was too short.

I did this ages ago, but I gess nothing changed:

Run Command Prompt and go in directory with Golden Axe
type: copy hero.spr hero1.spr
copy chicken.spr hero.spr
you will be asked do you want to overwrite hero.spr and answer with "Y"

now run the game and choose man (not amazon girl or dwarf) and you will play as that chicken dragon that hits with his tale. No enemy can hit you so you just use your tail and you'll finish the game easily.

When you want to bring back normal palying, just copy hero1.spr hero.spr (copy back hero)

Enjoy!!!!

I would not compare it to FinalFight :)

marko river
29-11-2004, 12:27 PM
hehehe, your're my man, man..

For me, Final Fight is something special. Man, I spent money on that one. Probably even more than on Golden Axe. Especially because my friends liked FF more so in two-mode it's very fun. Well, Final Fight was just another beat'em up. Well maybe just a little better. After that one, there were millions of clones. You know, like Cadilacs and Dinosaurs, and even Punisher is just good maked up FF. You probablu remember yellow bar gor energy and it leave red when they hit you. Even those other colours for boss enemy. Lots of games like that. Well Punisher changed it a bit but it still has same stuff, especialyy bonus levels.

Now, I wouldn't put Golden Axe in classic beat em up. Even other parts of GA weren't like first one. Can you think on tougher enemy then Death=Adder?

Enter any word at the first screen. The game is cracked and will accept anything.

At the character screen, press "5" on your keypad to choose your character. That's the "fire" key for this game.

Yea I loved doing that. I did that file copying probably ~12 years ago now and went through all the files to see what I could play as. I particularly liked playing as one of the large armoured guys with the huge sword. That had a nice reach. :)

The document in the game folder lists the controls, but it also says something like "...if you haven't reconfigured the controls". So if the listed controls are only default controls, how do I make my own?

Help will really be appreciated. The attack-key is very inconveniently placed in the middle of the control keys.

One of the best arcade games ever. I used to play it on arcade and used to end it 9 out of 10 times in a single coin. The real challenge for me and my friends was to get to the highest score possible
However we couldnt figure out the basis on which score is decided.

Final fight was also a great classic. Unfortunatly it was much tougher than GA. I used to end it in 2 coins at the prime of my arcade play but final level and boss of 4th level (Rolento) were the bitch.

And Death=Adder is one of the easiest boss ever just time your jump attack and he will die without even hitting you once.

You choose your character with the attack key, which is Numpad 5. Was this how you tried to do that?

Guest

How do you redefine the controls? (if you can). So far the controls I've found are q,w,e,a,d,z,x,c for movement s for attack rshift for magic and tab for jump which is extremely awkard to use and makes the game three times as hard as it noramlly is. Any help would be much appreciated. Num pad doesnt seem to work either.

dr_st
02-05-2005, 08:22 AM
Odd, what you have there seems to be the controls for the second player (except that magic should be LShift). For the first player it should be the numpad for movement, Pad5 to attack, Ins (or Pad0) to jump and Rshift for magic. Maybe Dosbox screws it up? In the original PC version the controls aren't redefinable either.

Try fiddling with the Numlock key, maybe then the numpad keys will work.

WOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWW...
This game rocks... Iīve used to play on my 80386, and apreciated very much the music that came from the PC speakers (it didnīt have sound columns). In fact, I canīt remember of another game that sounds better than this one with the PC speakers. (Can you? And donīt think so... :sneaky: ) No, I play it with my not-so-old computer (the old 386 is... well... down!), but the sound comes from the columns instead of the PC speaker, even when I play it with plain DOS.
Do you guys know if there's some way to turn this around (some hidden option, maybe)? Just for the sake of enjoing good old nostalgia stuff and that kind of things... if you know what I mean... :max: :max: :max:

Rename Copy of fireball.spr as dwarf.spr

Now play as the dwarf. He's my favourite, 'cos he's tough!!
You'll find that the fireball has no standing attack, but it can do what it does best. It can fling itself at bad guys! :ok:
Just do a ram-jump!

You are also allowed to do magic. But, for some reason, it does it twice - even better!

And it's particularly hilarious when the king dubs the fireball a hero! :roflol:

Actually, first time i finished the game i played as fireball. i played two levels and got sick of having to fight that way, but i hated even more to start again with chicken. Later on i regret that.

I was never able to get far in PC version. Arcade one rules. I also never thoguht of mixing the enemies. I must try that. :D

Actually, dwarf has strongest attack and weakest magic. Amazon is oposit, while warrior is somewhere in the middle. At least, this was the way in arcade vesrions.

Arcade classic from sega not to be missed... The one i had was called something like Golden Axe deluxe edition, was more or less the same. I used to love this game and i still do. Yes great game....played it on Sega Master System II and after that on PC 80486...33MHz. ^ ^

If you want to begin the game on a higher level just press the number of the level right after you've selected your player and pressed fire.

This also works for duel-mode but of course level 9 here would be highest possible level to start at.

OK...that was a stupid Newbie question by me. :whistling:

To do magic hit your right shift key, whether you use a joystick or not.

Pretty cool game but I must improve my battle moves to get farther than the 4th map. "Charging" like a football player is a good tactic vs. the giants and the dragon riders to knock them down.

Well, in PC game every character has the same attack - every hit takes 1/4 of the whole health bar. The only thing that the dwarf has - is the reach! The axe reaches much further then the swords, and jump+hit is made easier.

The thing with the long jump is solved with "running+jumping", so one need but to stand in middle of the map, press two times "->" and then jump. It's no bug, but it did give me some trouble some... let's say... 15 years ago ;) Anyway, Goldaxe is one of the greatest games ever! Still playing it in Linux (with Dosbox) :titan:

There are only three buttons, attack, jump, and magic. Don't remember right now which keys in the PC version but it should be easy for you to look for them. To run hit forward twice. The only special move are: both buttons at once (makes you lose life I think); run and attack; jump and attack; and run, jump and attack while airborne and holding down (but it's extremely difficult to hit with this one).

I have fond memories of playing this game a lot on arcade, back in Brazil, in the early nineties.
I would get as far a the third or fourth level with 2 credits.
I used to think that the game finished once you killed death adder but now I know that is not the case...

Is it not? :weird: The arcade version or the PC one? I've beaten the former several times and I just saw the ending clip.

This is like a port of the Genesis, or as we say over here Mega Drive version. I didn't last to the end because the gameplay is choppy and uneven by comparison. That said, being able to control the characters via a mouse was really cool.

Can I assume the ending is similar to the Genesis version?

For me despite being shorter, the MAME/Arcade version wins. :hypno:

This question likely has been asked a thousand and one times but, how does one reconfigure the controls? I don't have a joystick, mouse movement is too wiggly, but the keyboard and keypad controls are too cramped for me. The text file in the game suggests they can be reconfigured, but how? Help me, Abandonia, you're my only hope.

You can always use DOSBox' built-in keymapper (CTRL+F1). :)

Built my own arcade machine several years back and this was one of the first games to go in it. I must have put a decent amount of coinage through the one at the local milkbar & when i got it on pc me and my brothers would hack away for hours. I'd totally forgotten the pc version had duel mode... grabbed.

Played this, after playing hours and hours of Reunion (http://www.abandonia.com/vbullet/showthread.php?t=456) last night, just to chill a little, and finished it very quickly :( but now, any time I feel nostalgic and have like hour to kill I know what I'm gonna do :OK::smile2:

Go go team Golden Axe XD

Check this (http://www.abandonia.com/vbullet/showpost.php?p=29692&postcount=15) for mroe fun with GA on PC (in case you didn't know). You can then experiment with copying over anything into anything.

P.S. It was published in SK at the time :)

I remember that I played this game in the arcade, but unfortunately I forgot almost everything about the game.

I love the Medieval theme in Perspective Platform

Well, back to the past. Hello, Marty. XD

By the way, stika posted something interesting here The Dos port of Golden Axe lets you play as a Dragon riding a Dragon (http://www.abandonia.com/vbullet/showthread.php?t=33873).

Hi guys! :)

Does someone knows the 2nd player buttons?
You can choose 2 players from menu -> choose the 1st -> OK -> roll the remaining 2 characters and then what?
How can you choose the one you selected?

Square (that is not very square on current keyboards) from Q to C with S as Fire works for one player, Square from 7 to 3 with 5 as Fire - for second. Or vise versa.

THANKS Smiling Spectre! :OK:

True! (although I'm clueless what the square key is). :smile2:

What puzzles me is what is the Magic key for the 2nd player.
When I'm running the DOS port (at DOSBox or DOSEmu) the 2nd player activates magic when the right key is pressed (although the same key moves the 1st player).
Seems to be a bug to me.

The 1 player mode seems to work flawlessly.

Anyway! I tried also the MAME port and the 2 players mode works as expected.

It's not a key. It's figure. :D

(It's quite tedious to list all nine - ten with magic - buttons. I thought, it's enough to mention "square" pattern: Q is upper left, W is up, E is upper right, D is right, etc. Didn't work, it seems? :)

Oh I see!
Now I got it right! :OK:

Well, the square combination works (movement and jump and hit). What didn't work for me (at DOS port) is the key for doing magic for the 2nd player.

Ah, it seems, I missed two buttons (sorry, I never played Golden Axe, actually).

So for left player Tab=Jump, left Shift=Magic.

For right player jump is 0, and magic is right Shift.

They are not intersected as far as I see.

Hmm, but maybe you stumbled in famous Matrix bug? See, on some (older, I believe) keyboards the keys are detected by square matrix, just as coordinates. "3rd up, second left contact pair is Q". It works perfectly for one letter, and somewhat circumvented for two, but three and more simultaneously pressed keys can trigger totally wacky combinations.

If it is matrix, it's not the game bug - it's hardware keyboard bug. Change keyboard then. :)

Hi everyone,

A few months ago I created a YouTube channel dedicated to retro games and this week I took a look at the PC version of Golden Axe, which lets you play as ANYTHING in the game. You play as the final boss or every enemy in the game for that matter. You can even play as a dragon riding a dragon that shoots dragons.

Anyway, I hope you'll enjoy the video!

FBB1nSFxrCk

Look at what changes stika made in the game Golden Axe as shown in the video above.

Would it be possible to summon Goku and Shenlong to destroy the enemies? Bah, I hope not, because I am not much of a fan of the series.

I just realized that there is actually a readme file, buried under a million of similar ones, although it is somewhat confusing.

I played Golden Axe but trying to use the default keys is a nightmare, not to mention that combos are virtually impossible (at least for DOSBox).

Of course remapping DOSBox keys (as already suggested above) is a solution, but not the easier to implement.
Remapping never worked properly for me (at Linux). XD

Well...I finally played it at MAME. Configuring keys is a piece of cake and as a bonus, it offers save states too (and cheats for the really desperate)! :)

Guys, THANKS AGAIN for your help!!! :OK:
