There is in fact a whole series:

Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego? (1989)
Where in Europe is Carmen Sandiego? (1990)
Where in America's Past is Carmen Sandiego? (1991)
Where in the USA is Carmen Sandiego? (1992)
Where in Space is Carmen Sandiego? (1993)

I love this game it is so good

However, I am irritated by having to look up answers every time I get promoted so I am trying to put together a full list of questions and answers for the benefit of us all.

If anybody can tell me questions that they have been asked - with answers if you know them, then I can put them all together. If you don't have answers don't worry, I'm quite happy to do the research, I just don't want to play the first mission over and over again to get a question only to find out that its one I already answered.

It also helps if you can tell me the number of letters when it asks for a word

Of course, by the time I've done this someone will have uploaded a cracked version of the game or found the manual but it keeps me occupied!

Excuse my lack of understanding, but I thought those games were "quiz" like, and the goal was to learn the questions?

mouse31e
29-10-2004, 08:08 AM
Yes but the idea was that you had the correct resource to find those answers quickly. If you don't have the manual it can take quite a while to discover which state is slightly larger than Surinam, for example.

If you enjoy looking them all up then that's fine, go for it, but I would prefer to have them to hand and get on with playing the game which is far more enjoyable.

All these questions are is copy-protection disguised as education!

Hi,
Thanks to you guys I located this game finally, (since I did not remember the game). I played the game years back on a 386 and loved it. I am using a windiws 2000 machine now and I cant run the exe file. I get a blank screen and nothing else.

Got any ideas? do I need to find an earlier DOS versions?

Keep it going guys. Great thread.

Peace

If you have DosBox you should be able to run it in that!
If you don't have DosBox see the Programs section under Utilities on the Home Page.
If you can boot your computer into Dos, it should run there!
Normally it works fine under windows but it is possible it won't work with windows 2000 for some reason.
If you can't get it started you could try downloading it again.

Sorry I can't be of more help!

Yeah the questions at the end arn't of the 'what country has a red and white flag' variety. Here is the question, and answer I got off the net, that I was asked before promoted:

Pedro Alvares Cabral is credited as being the first european to reach Brazil in: 1500

By the way, is Where in Space is Carmen Sandiego abandonware?

mouse31e, this site may help you with the Q's & A's. The one I talked about earlier isn't even on the list, so I thought id just share the URL rather then put the whole thing here.

List of promotional questions and answers:

http://www.geocities.com/TelevisionCity/St...cheatsheet.html (http://www.geocities.com/TelevisionCity/Station/9533/cheatsheet.html)

.... have you seen them asked before?

My apologies if the site is a bit erratic, it has only been online for about 26 minutes but it was something I needed to do and Saturday morning seemed like a good time. :ok:

God, this game brings back memories. I played the original on a Commodore Amiga 2000 (still have it!)

It's interesting to see the world frozen in time in this game; you'll notice that some questions reference the now-defunct USSR and refer to the leader as the "party secretary." 1990 was a great year for games.

Awesome site.

Cheers.

Some other company (that is in ESA) must have bought Bronderbund, and therefore owns the rights to all of it's games.

Hello is that possible to know where I could find the french version of that game?
Also I'd like to know, when i get the incorrect answer on the english version, the game just closes after 3 tries, instead of...doing something else? :)

Thanks for the time you'll take to answer me !

You can probably find "A la Poursuite de Carmen Sandiego dans le Monde," for sale somewhere on Ebay - I noticed that there are quite a few english copies up for sale there, so if you dig deep enough I'm sure you'll find yourself a copy.

Of course, it's already been mentioned that the game is ESA protected, so no download for you good Sir ;)

I loved this game - many a rainy afternoon was spent in the school library playing it. *sigh* Good times :D

(By the way, has anybody seen the animated television series that was based on Carmen Sandiego and her V.I.L.E henchmen?)

I saw some people wondering why this is ESA protected. As far as I know it is not abandoned yet. The game is still for sale in many countries for school use mainly but can also be purchased for home use.

Hi, guys!

First of all, nice game for the time it was released.

But here's the thing I want to add to the thread. I've seen the collecting of copyright protection questions and answers before, and as I played it today, I just happened to get a question that is not on your list. Therefore I want to share this info with you guys.

The question I got is this:
Iceland is 39,769 square miles; the size of the state of ________. (8 characters)

I googled about it and found that it should be Kentucky. Unfortunately the game didn't took this answer, I tried it twice.

So, maybe you can use that information.

Thx and keep on retro-gaming. :ok:

Hi again!

I crossed over another question that is not mentioned in your collection, but this time, I got an answer that worked ingame too.

The question this time is:
How many stories does the Chicago Sears Tower have? (no character number given)

The Answer is:
110

Well, till the next one I guess, hope this helps to get the list more complete.

And sry for two posts, as unregistered, I can't add as you might guess.

Thx and keep on retro-gaming. :ok:

I was playing today and the promotion question I got was "James Monroe, the 5th United States President, was the son of _____ Monroe and somelady Jones." I've never seen this question on a list but after several google attempts I found the answer is Spence. Surprisingly enough, I couldn't even find the answer in an encyclopedia question. I have no idea how people played this game before the advent of the internet unless you had some kind of cheat sheet. I myself never owned this game as a child. Just played at my friends house and she constantly had to help me. LOL

Newkid1500

So people are still playing this game. Pretty funny. On the countries being similar-sized to states, sometimes you have to pick the next closest sized state, so instead of Kentucky, Iceland was said to be the size of Virginia. I got that out of an old encyclopedia. Besides, I'm Canadian and not really up on the sizes of different states anyway.

Can't somebody update Where in the World is Carmen San Diego? I'd buy an updated version. Some of the flags have changed, U.S.S.R. no longer exists, nor Czechoslovakia. Don't have to change the graphics, I'm totally fine with old-style graphics. I own an up-to-date book of flags and currencies. That game is still stuck back in 1989. While you're at it, update the Where in Europe? version.

Mighty Midget

Or, you can see it as a history lesson, the world map anno 1989. If one updates old classics like that, won't it be natural to have three terrorists chasing pac-man? Ghosts are so out of fashion.

Until recently I still had my original "Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego" disks. It has been great to revisit these games via Abandonia.I am no expert on flags or countries and never looked up encyclopaedias or the net but found the clues given in the games worked for me quite well. The game probably is a bit dated now but like many games of that era pulls one back to play it again and again....Sal

The only way to do that would be if the original developer decided to make a new version. Which I really don't see happening - with todays kids, it's easier to market Doom 4 to them than anything that requires more brains than pressing fire when next enemy appears onscreen

In the game...Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego....how do you get past the part where your in China and you have to mix the formulas....
all i know is there is a dragon, a rabbit, and a snake

The clues are:

If i breath fire, use twice as much from me than if i hiss

If i hop, use three times as much from me than if i slither

If i exist only in myths, use four from me

Plese help me!!! Thanks!
p.s how many of each do i use? and you can only have up to 6 from each

Where in the world of computer gaming are you my friend???

What you just mentioned has nothing to do with any of the Carmen Sandiego games. Please check again which game you're playing and repeat the question (possible in the discusion for that given game).

The Fifth Horseman
19-05-2008, 08:34 PM
This definitely isn't from any game in the Carmen San Diego series (or any other I played, for that matter).

But the puzzle itself is elementary, my dear Watson.

"If i exist only in myths, use four from me"
"If i breath fire, use twice as much from me than if i hiss"
"If i hop, use three times as much from me than if i slither"
Each adjective describes one of the three animals.
Breaths fire, exists only in myths = Dragon.
Hisses & Slithers = Snake
Hops = Rabbit

One sentence gives you a value outright, the second tells you the proportion between it and the first unknown and the third tells you the proportion between the two unknowns. The rest is a repeat of primary school maths:

Dragon = 4
Dragon = 2x Snake => 4 = 2x Snake => Snake = 2
Rabbit = 3x Snake => Rabbit = 6
