Yeah, raptor is one fine game, I`ve spent most of my time as a kid playing this game. But one thing i don`t like is that when you get all the weapons, the game becomes boring... :rifle: :wall:

I loved that one. Raptor was just like plugging out your brains and destroy everything that comes into your way. Unfortunately, as Spawn said, when you got all weapons it's becoming boring fast...

My tactics was to save all the money for that homing minigun and then add all the extra stuff like plasma and mini rockets to it. Worked pretty well, but you needed a whole bunch of shields every level later on.

Theres a real, REAL great trick to earn a lot of money. in level 5 or 6 you get those crazy :w00t: missiles (blackout, can´t remeber their name). start the level, fly and grab those missiles, and then Esc-quit the game. you will still have the missiles, so now you just sell them for about 75000cr. now do it again, and do so ´til you have your favourite weapon.

I nearly cried when I *cough*acquired*cough* this game. The shareware version was the greatest game ever back when I got it. I simply loved the sounds, music, weapons, enemies... well everything. It really brings back memories of my old 486.

The screenshots looks good but the levels are monotonous. If you like top-down shooters for DOS try Tyrian 2000 with parallax-scrolling.
If you like side-scrolling shooters like the classics R-Type or Katakis try Stargunner (absolutely superb).

I like the graphics too but thers is more to like about this game. I love the wepon system and the fact that its a bit more that just line up and shoot.

The weapon-system in Stargunner is very great too. You can buy different weapons, shields, satelites etc. like in Raptor.
But Stargunner has also cool smooth 3D-animations (rotating ships) and tripple parallax-scrolling.
Also in Tyrian your ship is upgradable and has tripple parallax-scrolling and a cool water-/lava-animation in some levels (waves,waterfalls).
Raptor has only a simple scrolling without such ship- and background-animations.

There's a side effect of using the "BACKSPACE" cheat code... because you will lose your score - it will be reset to zero.

Score is used to buy new weapons... though by pressing BACKSPACE a few times, you can make big money by selling your extra uber lasers once back in base... so it is actually no trouble at all. But if your target is to put your name in the high scores list, this cheat is only good for the first mission.

I remember my sisters played the game with a heavy battery on the BACKSPACE button...

I had it too. I wasn't very good at it but I got my ship to have the crazy boomarang gun (its quite good) anyway its quite a detailed shooter compared to most. Very fun

The best thing about Raptor was the music - some of the best scores for computer music ever! And compared to other games in that genre, Raptor is more complex - and offers more changing levels than as an example - Xenon/xenon2......Too bad ESA is protecting this one :ph34r:

the best way to cheat is as follows:
at the beginning, before you even start shooting, press the backspace 20 million times, then quit out of the level. at the shop, sell all of your deathrays, and buy everything you need! you can even afford the gem encrusted twin cannon you always wanted! :brain:

but cheating isn't always the most fun...

There isn't any great need to cheat in this game. Just buy yourself 5 Shilds and you are nearly invinsible

What is the differnece between the whole and the shareware version?
Because I *grabed* this game, and seems complate to me with 3 difficulties, 3 worlds, 6 level on every level (and +1 for the end bos)

Yup... DOS, Windows and even Linux versions LOL, I have em all and proud of it. Awesome shmup, there is only one that is better: Tyrian. But Tyrian is almost impossible to surpass I bet. :-)

the_fifth_horseman, I remember those things were used to access some easter eggs, the game is full of em. Also some combinations do really modify gameplay a bit, although I don't remember which ones do what anymore, I used to play it long ago. Perhaps a good time to replay it again.

Also I would suggest to try Demonstar SM1/SM2, made by the same people behind Raptor, essentially it's a superb clone of Raiden. Unfortunately it doesn't have shop and other distinguishable features seen in Raptor and Tyrian. On the other hand network coop is extremely fun. :-)

I loved to play Raptor since i was young and beautiful.
In earlier Times i just played the Shareware Version but someday i found the Full Version (it was on a Game CD or something.. i dont Remember)

Now i completed almost the whole Game but the Final Wave at the End is Impossible... even with full Shields, Mega Bombs and lot of Training im finish after the 1st Boss..

But its one of my favourite Games ever... i will make a Remix of a Level Song... think its Level 7 or something..

So has anyone here ever finished and beaten Raptor? I've heard people say it isn't that difficult with the right weapons and shields, but I've never been able to beat the last level and bosses, it always seemed way too insanely difficult.

I did, multiple times (and thus on all difficulties). Use the best weapon along with the surface to ground missiles and all auto-equip weapons, get full shields (if necessary, deplete an old one at the end of a mission if it's recieved too much damage), and make sure you don't have more switchable weapons (timing is essential in that, imho). Keep four bombs ready, with the last one being pickup or money.

Oh, and always start with the Bravo sector. The other sectors are very hard without any equipment. The Bravo sector can be finished with machine guns only (I did, though not on elite yet [/brag] :P).

I got the demo of this a couple years ago as part of eGames' Arcade Master game CD. I never really liked it that much (preferred Demonstar and Drone), but after reading the glowing reviews on here, I just may try it again. The funny thing is, I never knew it was a DOS game, or that it was so old, until I saw it as the 'screenshot of the day' on here!

Sorry to all Raptor-fans but I think that the levels, graphics and effects are not varied enough.
My favorites are STARGUNNER (a little like Katakis or R-Type) and Tyrian 2000. Sometimes I play the nostalgic shooters Xenon 2 (converted from Amiga-game) and Overkill (like old C64 shooters).

This game is kewl, but I remember DawnRaider was bit better. It had a cool super-beam weapon that required you to press and and hold a button for some 30 seconds before it fully charged up. And you could play coop with a friend sharing 1 keyboard. DR didn't have many weapons, only 1 that could be upgraded like 30 times until it reached it's full potential.
