are you sure you used a right command while mounting a hard drive as cdrom (mount [virtualcdromdrive] [realpatch] -t cdrom) ?
[/b]
Yes, when I have mounted the drive I get:
"MSCDEX: Mounted subdirectory: limited support.
Drive D is mounted as CDRom /volumes/dvdvolume/"

HELP!
I am sorry to dig on this very old thread, but i desperately want to play this game on MAC OS Leopard

I can't play it! I mount the c drive, then I try to execute every file and I can't get it to work! This is what I get with every file:

a) execute the "GO.BAT" file and get this message
C:\HEROES>GO
C:\HEROES\mount d: -t cdrom d:\
Directory d:\ doesn't exist

b) execute the "HEROES.CFG" file and get this message
c:\HEROES>Heroes
Illegal command: heroes

c)execute (one of) the "Install" files and get this message
C:\HEROES>INSTALL
C:\HEROES>SETUP /NODETECT

d) execute the setup file and get this message:
C:\HEROES>setup
Illegal command: setup

what do I do?? I'm running Mac OS Leopard

Are you running the game in DOSBox?
If so, please post exact commands you are using and information about where your copy of the game is located in your directory structure.
Oh yes, and what is the path to your CD (or DVD) drive, since you'll apparently need to modify the go.bat file with it (I'll be able to tell you the exact command to use when I know the path).

I am using DOSBox and those are the commands I execute and the messages I get.

My copy of the game is on my home folders, so it's /users/filipe/dosgames/heroes

I mounted the c: in my home folder:

mount c /users/filipe/dosgames

When I insert a DVD into the drive, any folder in it says to be located in the /volumes/dvdvolume section

mount d: -t cdrom /volumes/dvdvolume

Also note that it is much easy to place those commands into config file (AUTOEXEC) of DOSBox, so that you don't have to type this every time you start DOSBox

I did that (but changed the dvdvolume to "dvd_video" because the dvd driver has the same name as the DVDs that you introduce and the one I had was "dvd_video") and I got this message:
MSCDEX: Mounted subdirectory: limited support.
Drive D is mounted as CDRom /volumes/dvd_video

But then I try to execute any of the Heroes files and I get the exact same error messages as my other post !

Did you try to create ISO and just mount ISO instead of CD?

Another thing you can do is to copy all files from CD into folder, and then mount that folder as CD.

What ISO file? Do I need an ISO file for this? I just downloaded the Heroes folder from a website and DOSBox and I thought that was it. What else do I need?

Windows version has ISO file which you can burn on CD and then install the game to your computer. No dosbox needed there.

ISO file is disk image, but in this case you don't need that. Sorry, I was under impression that you have original disk.

This game require only to recognize that your system has a CD, it does not matter what is in it.

Easiest solution in your case is to create dummy folder on your home directory (for example 'temp' folder - /users/filipe/temp ) and then mount this folder as CD (mount d -t cdrom /users/filipe/temp).

Start the game, and execute heroes. It should work and you should see attached screen.

The Review mentions that the game has balance issues, and specified that the 'mountain' race has the easiest go of it?

I am uncertain if this is a translation issue? But surely he/she was referring to the 'Warlock' Race? As it is generally agreed that they have the best creature lineup.

I would strongly disagree that this imbalance haunted the series forever after that; HoMM2 shows significantly more balance... until ghosts are introduced in the expansion.

HoMM3 Is a rather well-balanced game; In this case there is only one race that's clearly got a weaker force, and that is the Necropolis. With weaker earlier units and a weaker L7 unit.

HoMM1 is a great game and has a lot of 'charm' you could say, which its sequel somewhat keeps, and seems to degrade slightly into a turn-based 4X game by HoMM3; and the instalments 4 and 5 in the series you start wondering if the developers felt like necromancers who revived the same skeleton a few too many times.

There could probably be a really good debate as to which HoMM is the best;
As to the most fun 'light' adventure/exploration game, i'd go with this one for the original novelty 'high'. Just the fun of sending heroes out and finding all the goodies on the map, and then plotting how best to take out that enemy hero who's making a huge nuisance of itself back home. :D

EDIT: About CD ROM issues people have, in dosbox I have found that simply mounting an actual cd rom with this seems to work seamlessly; If the game doesn't work there are probably other set-up and configuration tweaks that need to be made. As far as the simulated DOS environment goes, this game is one of the more picky ones.

I'd highly recommended a frontend like "Dos Box Game Launcher" to help you keep configurations for individual games saved and together in one place, so once you have it all set up you need only click on the name and play.

Guys, i've got a problem running HOMM - while i'm at the global map and moving heroes/building etc - everything's perfect, but when in battle - the game crashes after 3 or 4 moves. It's really disappointing, 'cause i miss HOMM1 greatly :) what can cause such crashing?

what version are you using (dos or windows - they are both on the site)?
what OS are you using?

try the windows version (also available on the site). it works great on win2000, even on very old notebooks.

the crash could be caused by bad download (error in file). but hard to say for sure if there are no error messages.

Hey guys i was wondering if someone could help me. I just finished reading all 27 pages of posts and have attempting to get HoMM1(dos) to run through dosbox.

i am using dosbox .72 and running it on my Notebook PC with Vista OS. I have run about 20 other games through dosbox and this is the only one give me a problem. I have tried all the variations listed here and it still does not seem to work.

I use the commands:

z:>e: -t cdrom e:\ c:\users\blah\blah blah
*Tells me it is mounted as a cdrom*
z:>e:
E:>heroes.exe
*then it tells me i have performed an illegal operation.*

Any help would be much appreciated.

mount d e:\ -t cdrom
mount c c:\users\blah\blah blah
c:
cd blah blah
blahblahblah

And some more blahblahblah.

And add a blah where needed.

You hardly can expect us to write it all out for you if you're even too lazy to post something else than blahblah yourself.

Well, the rest of the code wasnt important because i was accessing the file n all at its proper place.
The commands should be posted in the exact syntax you entered in DOSBox. Small errors in a part that "wasn't important" are cause of a large number of problems people come to us with.

E:>heroes.exe
*then it tells me i have performed an illegal operation.*
Exact error message, please. It's not like taking a screenshot in DOSBox is difficult.

I'm now blind, dumb & frustrated. I, too, have tried all the variations I could find to the cd problem for this game. It is still saying "unable to access cd drive. Currently, I have the .conf file setup as follows...
[autoexec]
# Lines in this section will be run at startup.
mount c C:
mount d c:\ -t cdrom
Any help/ideas ??

Try mounting the game directory as the CD drive.
Also, never mount the root of your system drive. Use a dedicated directory for your dos games and mount that as C drive in DOSBox.

so I mounted the drive and everything as I have done with every other game I've played on the DosBox. However, when I try to actually play the game, it stalls for a few minutes and then the message "Unable to access CD Drive." comes up. Any ideas on what to do? I figured I could just start over an get the file from the site again, but I'm an idiot and I can't find the download link. Anyway, please help. I used to love this game, and I'd love to be able to play it again.

Info on game sheet:

IMPORTANT!!! In order for the game to run you must mount your cdrom in DOSbox by using the following command: MOUNT * -t cdrom *:
* = your cdrom drive. (Most used d: and e:)

Examples:
mount d e:\ -t cdrom if your CD drive under windows is E:\
mount d f:\ -t cdrom if your CD drive under windows is F:\
mount d g:\ -t cdrom if your CD drive under windows is G:\
mount d h:\ -t cdrom if your CD drive under windows is H:\

also i hope you are not running the windows version in DOSBox.
BTW if you download the windows version and burn it on CD everything should work fine (install and play) in WinXP & lower (at least).

I first played a demo of this from PC Gamer and was instantly hooked. :2thumbs: All of the games up until HOMM4 were just great fun.

If you don't consider HOMM4 to be fun then bury yourself. It was the most undervalued game ever. And... well... who cares, everyone plays what they like.

HOMM4 had many new great features to offer. However instant enemy retaliation wasn't that great - you were much more certain to suffer own unit losses than in the previous games. And the Resurrection spell for heroes was removed too, Angel units were the only ones left with ability to resurrect friendly units. Which was altogether a huge mistake in my opinion.

Ever used the spell Divine Intervention? Perhaps only available for Life, it resurrects all the heroes and gives a large amount of HP to them. But it's still there. The problem is, that the fanatics couldn't bear the changes. I'm mostly a fan of HOMM4 because it was the first of the series I played with, but I was at least not blinded by prejudicement.

Oh don't worry, I like Heroes of Might & Magic IV not any less than HOMM3 or HOMM2, there are simply many new things you can do in it which you couldn't in previous games.
Considering that with a high level Demonologist hero who masters Demonology and Nature Magic (summon Poison Spitters, Ice Demons or Devils) or with an Arch Mage hero (3 or more magic schools, +20% effect on all spells I think) with Life, Order and Chaos magic (you can add Nature to that, but not necessary) you can pretty much solo almost any battle, if you don't also forget to master his Combat skills and maybe Tactics, this alone is a pretty different experience from previous games in the series, and a huge freedom I very much enjoyed to exhaust to it's limits.

Well considering that it seems that if HOMM4 succeeded, then HOMM5 could have been a TBS/RPG hybrid. Which could be awesome! :D

I just remembered a post on GOG (or somewhere else) regarding how HOMM4 is undervalued. From the time perspective (also considering the fate the whole MM series has shared) we can say, that 4 had a good strength of fantastic ideas. But that is because we can see what a great leap forward the game was and (as with oldies) we tend to overlook things that were wrong.

Still, when the game was released, it was a huge disappointment. The first release had tons of bugs (it froze after each battle on my system :/ ) and I can remember how I hated the game for quite some years. It was only after I bought Heroes 4 Complete after several years that I felt in love with this game. But that's due to the pacing and storytelling in campaigns, not the game quality overall.

I've played most HoM&M so far, and they all had overpowered stuff (which got corrected in the next version)

In one archers were too strong and an army of archers/ranged would kill anything but armies heavy on the strongest and fastest flyers. Then it was magic, up to the point you could go into a battle with some meatshields and magic your way to victory. It's a work in progress I guess.

Though the 9999 fairy army in.... 2 I think? was fun, as well as the 9999 peasants with the perfect necromancer

Evil Bunny
07-11-2012, 12:56 PM
The difficulty imbalance was frustrating - I would spend weeks trying to gather an army... only for my hundreds of peasants to be wiped out by 3 mice or something :P .
