Is this reallly from 1997? That is quite amazing then. The graphics actually keep me trying some tedious jumping parts over and over again because I want to see more of them :) I would have preferred a save-anywhere option though, so that those jumping parts wouldn't be such a drag. Ah well, I'm rating it a 4 as well anyway.

What do you mean by "maybe the only decent 3D shooter on the N64?"
How can you forget Perfect Dark? Or the one that set the standard for console shooters, GoldenEye.
Hope you guys enjoy anyways.

Does it need a really new computer?
I reckon all these abandonia games need a requirements(if approx even)section.
Cos I dont want to wait for 2 hours to find it wont work.

very nice game at first glance...... but really after a while it's starts getting tiring to be honest and at some point i got lost in a strange maze with dimensions (if i remember well) and well after going around in circles for a few hours going nowhere i called it quits. For it's era those graphics were unprecedent, however there's nothing else original about it........ maybe it was a commercial for the new era graphics of the time, because in terms of storyline.... there's none!!!!!! I don't know about u but one of my priorities is a good story to give meaning. therefore if i am going to play an action game i would really go for the newer one's.
All said i think the only old games that are really worth playing are adventure and rpg games, some simulation and strategy but other than that i think that action games loose their value fast in comparison.
ok i went a bit :ot: but that's my opinion

Why not, it's a good game and it's a classic. it's not that this site is DOS only or something (at least in my opinion)

i haven't played HALO (just tried it at a friend) it didn't appeal to me..... from action genres i would go for jedi knigts and mafia.... even Max Pane which is a classic shoot em up game has a story.
I just mentioned that to some people (i like to think a lot of ppl) the story is a selling point. OK if it was a combat simulation that could be used for training the commandos of the future there's no need for story hehehehe i would play it anyway ;)

Thanks for the game guys. :) This was state of the art when it came out, even used for benchmarking early 3D accelerators IIRC. Great fun to revisit that era, but I'd sure wish Turok had a gamma slider thingy somewhere.

For those who miss the decent storyline, use your imagination and think yourselves a one :D
My viewpoint for the story for Turok: Turok is a notorious dinosaur hunter, respected by other natives and hunters. One day some some strange portals open, but our little caveman and others don't show any intrest to them, they just let them be, because it doesn't do any harm to anyone.
One day, Turok wakes up in front of his campfire, and notices that his friends and other people of his tribe are gone. 'Where are they?'. Turok realizes it has something to do with the strange portals. He decides to go check it out. Suddenly, he hears some footsteps coming at him. Turok grabs his bow and knife - he feels that there is evil in the air.
Go Turok, find out what's behind those portals and save your people!
(Is it very lame? )

No, you're fine. The game is just noisy about Glide initialization... for no good reason since you will not be using Glide (=proprietary 3dfx Voodoo 3D API).

sorry for saying this but damn I think this is crazy, first it gives "that glide2x.dll is missing.
The problem could be solved by installing the program again".
And then it says "this program could not be started , because sgl.dll was not found.
The problem could be solved by installing the program again".
Then it tells me that NO3D-accelerated hardware cards or drivers found,Turok requries
3D hardware Consult README.TXT, returning to Windows
and then when i press OK then it goes back to Windows like nothing have happened
Blood-Pigggy
12-10-2005, 09:46 PM
I never had that problem so I can't really help you.
The missing dlls. are most likely the game's inability to find them, not that they don't exist.

I don't get it. It ran like a charm for me. I just ignored the stupid glide error and played the game in WinXP  It porbably has to do with the fact that the game expects a 3dFX card...

Well, as said, the two dll errors are normal if you don't have an old Voodoo and/or SGL card installed.
As for the third error, I never encountered it, but maybe it's due to current invalid vidcard settings. Below are my settings as found in config.ned, Turok's configuration text file located in the DATA folder. If you like, replace the contents of your config.ned with what's quoted below and try again.

Yeah, most people don't get it running.
So they say, "OMG THIS SO G4Y!!!!!11!1" And then click on the one.
Other people don't like me, and they click on the one because I reviewed the game (I am not joking here, some people have done this to me).
Either that or they heard that Turok is bad from who knows where and gave it a one.
Or they see it's a FPS and say "FPS aren't original at all, they're crappy shovelware that all dumb developers make." These fools press the one.
In reality, about 40 of those votes actually played the game, and about 40 of them actually rated it on how much they liked it.

I'd have to say that this game is terrible despite its graphics for the time. It seems like hardly any time was taken to create this game. In the game your enemies spawn at random and the level design is terrible as you spend almost all your time looking for where to go rather than fighting challenging enemies. This game does not leave you with anything to talk to your friends about. This game contains no originality, as it features 'real-life' characters (dinosaurs, hunters, etc.).
Blood (1997) is far better than this.

Terrible is an overstatement.
You're basicly saying it's "bland".
It's just not your kind of game, there are people that're satisfied by simplistic gameplay.
You should envy them, they never have a lack of entertainment.

I read a Turok novel when I was 12 or so years old, the story is this teenager who is an indian finds out that his father was just killed while being a 'protector' of the tribe called a Turok, and he has to take his father's place. And there is some kind of rip in space or some other such nonsense that allows dinoasaur like people and animals to get in, and he has to go to that world to stop it... I think, I havent read it in 8 years.

The game is based on a comic that's over 20 years old.
I believe there was a comic with the original game to explain a story.
OK, to all these people that give a low score or can't play: it's abandonware, when you're into abandonware be so with all your heart; learn to tinker around with your PC (in the DOS-days we had to!), if the game still doesn't work you probably have a shitty graphics card (SIS onboard card or something).
My graphics card is an MSI FX5600 (Nvidia chip), I chose unknown card with all the options and 800*600: works like a charm!

I don't like this game. The only good thing is the graphics (which are excellent for the time), but gameplay suffers from serious drawbacks. The four most glaring ones are:
-lots of annoying jumping "puzzles" (a clear sign of lack of designer imagination)
-stupidity and blandness of enemies (ok, some of the bosses are cool, but the "many different enemies" are along the lines of guy with knife, guy with bone club, guy with spear, guy with pistol, guy with shotgun... and others are just too mudane - big bugs, dinosaurs - nothing original. Sometimes they are so stupid that they don't react to you unless you come very close, even if you're in plain sight. Their tactics? Charge head on or stand and shoot - no dodging, strafing, taking cover etc.)
-lack of storyline and repetitiveness of levels (they all look and playquite similar; it just gets boring after a while)
-the "map" function is useless - you only get maps for very few areas, otherwise you just get an arrow pointing to the north - the "map"
I would add lack of save option but i guess since it's a N64 remake that's forgivable.
I only rank it a 2. There are better FPS games out there (especially Blood, which was released the same year).

I don't like CD-rips that don't include the music files or video clips because it's takes the fun away from these game. Like really to lisen to the music while I play it, especaily this game. And of course, Turok doesn't have any video clip. I played it on N64.

Hello guys, sorry about necro-ing this thread, but I've got a question.
I downloaded this game yesterday, and it was pretty cool, but I'm not sure about something:
After you open the second log wall, where you get the explosive shotgun shells, there is a small path where you must jump to avoid the lava. It's all good, until I reach a place that has a ladder. When I climb the ladder, the game simply freezes, and it freezes the entire computer.
Is this a bug that this version has, or is the download a demo, or what?
I pretty much like this game, but I'd appreciate it if someone could answer my questions.
Thank you!

So, anybody else had this problem? Because, I must say that this game rocks, and I've only played it once, on n64. If anyone knows whether there is a bug in the game, or if this is just a demo version, I'd appreciate your help.

Would be really strange with a demo for such an old game  I love this game. The Graphics are great, extraordinary for the time. The lack of story doesn't really bother me, since i am an casual gamer in heart and long stories only bothers me.

Hmmm... for trying to buy the game you can probably get it used at any of the usual sites: ebay, amazon, froogle, etc. I don't know about getting it new though.
I however have my own question. I was near the end of the game (seventh level) and I was low on ammo so I decided to scoure some of the earlier levels for some ammo I may have missed. Anyways, on the second level, the jungle, in what I think is the last cave, where there is a large open cavern and then a forked path, both of which eventually meet up, I found something strange. I took the right path and following the right wall I came upon I cave that was blocked off by some stalagmites and stalactites. Inside I saw a minigun, some tek armor, a gold health, and a lot of purple triangles. I can not for the life of me figure out how to get in there! :eeeeeh: I checked all the walkthroughs I could find but none of them even mentioned it.
Does anyone know what I'm talking about or have any ideas how to get in there?
Gamefreak

Tried to blow the stalagmites (and stalagtites) up with a rocket launcher, grenade launcher or whatever the game offers in things heavy weaponry? It's usually the same thing in 3D shooters.

Sorry you didn't ask about it sooner, but you actually can invert the Y-axis if you want
When you first start up the game, before you click "start Turok" in the window with the cool picture of turok fighting with the raptor, go up to the menu under controls and under mouse there should be a box you can check called "Y-Axis Looking".

It works fine on my XP.
It might be your graphics card.
What kind do you have? If you have one of those basic ones that come with most $600 dollar computers it generally works with older games, since those cards are more generalized.
If you card is a fancy new GeForce or Radeon that might be the problem, they generally suffer when you try to play games with old 3D acceleration.

The game works fine for me on XP, and man is it bringing back memories! This game came with my very first 3Dfx card, a voodoo rush card. Not the greatest card, but it got my foot in the door. And despite being a console game, I found it be pretty damn fun. Myself, my brother, and my father all played through it to the end, and we all enjoyed it. Granted, it wasn't up to the standards of Jedi Knight or Quake 2, but it was a fun and colorful FPS game. Plus it has big levels and some simple puzzles to solve and some fun weapons. I highly recommend it to anyone who is still struggling to get it to run. Keep it up! Its worth it!

I played this game some time ago and thought it was super awesome. I was going to try it again, but it seems that it can't open the graphics dll (video_3dfx.dll or something) so I can't play it! I assume that this is because my graphics card is incompatible. Any suggestions?

This game works fine on my computer, but my dad has got a problem:
When he tries to play it, the graphics are all messy and some obstacles and enemies are invisible. And also the menu texts won't appear.
When he goes to the performance-menu at the start-screen, he can't choose any videocard and the only option he can do, is to turn on/off the fog. And turning it off doesn't help anything.
Does anyone know, what this means. My dad's (and my) guess is a crappy videocard

Perhaps the story is lame, but the comic is very old.
But the game tells me it could not find glide2.dll and other strange stuff like that.
Should i put the game on a fat32 drive i have ?
This reply is belated, but it should help others who have recently downloaded Turok and want to ditch the annoying glide2x.dll error message when they start the game. I'm using Windows XP and I've discovered that switching the compatibility mode of the executable to Windows 98 will eliminate the message completely. The game still plays flawlessly too. This is the first time in 8 years of XP usage that the backwards compatibility feature has actually helped me. :amused:

WASD click-to-kill was too confusing for developers back then, and they clearly had no idea people would want to change the control scheme, so they decided that the options menu didn't need a 'configure controls' setting.

I loved this game as a kid. I had it on Nintendo 64 (:perv:), though, so it weirded me out to find it for the PC. :oh:
I remember it almost perfectly: dudes are ridiculously easy to kill (one or two swings from your knife will do), dinosaurs are a bit tough, and I never seemed to be able to finish it. I got stuck where there's a bunch of gates. Apparently, I didn't collect something.
I guess I'll just have to play it again and find out!

For those of you who don't know the Story, Turok is a Native Time-Travelling warrior charged with protecting the Lost Land, which is unaffected by time.
The Campaigner is an evil warlord who wants to break the barrier between the Lost Land and Earth, so he can invade and begin his conquest of the universe.
I had this game for ages on the Nintendo 64, played it forever, over and over again. One of the greatest games ever.
Also, to answer a few questions i've seen here;
-You can configure your controls before you launch the game. Before you click 'Start Turok', the option is up top.
-The warning messages you get at the beginning are junk, just ignore them.
-There are 6 keys on the first level, 3 of them are tricky to get. Keep looking around until you find them all!
-You save by reaching these 'altars' that are placed in the levels. It can be a pain in the ass to find them but thankfully you can use them as many times as you like.
This game is great, but there's so much missing without the awesome music! Is there anywhere I can find it? If not, what format do the files have to be in if I want to put in the music myself?

what I really wanted to ask is
A: are there any tricks to getting more ammo or is there essentially a set amount per playthrough?
B: do headshots/bodyshots/limbshots actually affect anything? the pistol damage seems inconsistant at times.
but i was also wondering
why doesn't this game get the first-person tag? abandonware action is pretty narrow description when there are tags like first person, shooter, platformer(for the jumping puzzles DX) and heck fantasy applies too.

Another thing you should do is remove Video_3DFx.dll from the game folder. Then the game will ask you what graphics card you use. Choosing an old Nvidia card is good if you use any Nvidia card. Turok will work on my GTX 460 when I choose Nvidia Riva 128. It is because of good backwards compatibility. It probably is the same for ATI cards too!

Has anyone gotten the background music to play with the Abandonia version of Turok?
I found the tracks in MP3 format and they really rock!
Would be great to have them playing in game.
I tried downloading & installing the CD image from the cellar but it appears to be the Rendition only version and won't run on my PC. ( of course, I no longer have my Rendition vid card installed  )
The 2 versions seem to have all the same files with minor size differences ( except the rendition version doesn't have the extra vid driver DLLs )
So I think the music data is in the Abandonia version. Just a matter of getting it to play.
I have a Soundblaster X_FI Xtreme audio card.
Update:
After listening to the music tracks I am pretty sure they are MIDI so they would not be real big. Perhaps the game is not finding the MIDI device? Any ideas?

Well, my curiosity got the better of me. So, I grabbed a retail copy of Turok at Amazon for $8.
The only difference I can find between the retail version & Abandonia's is 5 bytes in Turock.exe
At x10FC3 Abandonia has x9090909090
and the retail exe has xE89831FFFF
This seems to be both a "no cd" and a "no music" patch.
So, if you zap these bytes in the Abandonia exe,
download the cd image from the cellar and mount it with something like Virtual CloneDrive you can play the game WITH MUSIC! WooT!!
