That's strange...
I deleted the one I had on my computer and downloaded the version on the site (the one you can get). I extracted it and it works just fine!
Download the file.
Extract the file (here miy be the catch - I have it in the C:\waxworks folder).
Run the WAX.BAT - a blue screen shoul appeare, followed by the Accolade screen and the Horror Soft screen - then the credits will roll.
When the manservent asks you for the ticket number press enter (without giving in any number) and you're ready to play!

If you use WinXP the game can freeze, so use either DOS, DOSBox or VDMSound.

I don't know what you're doing wrong, so if you want anybody to be able to help you, you'll have to provide more info.

maybe game must be extracted to c:\waxworks?maybe crack needs the specific path to run properly?i'll redownload it,unzip to c:\waxworks and see

sory for spaming forum,but after many years ive finally found the version of waxworks which wants to run at all.

The game definitely is cracked. I just downloaded it to a folder called Dos - not even to the root of the directory - then opened the file Wax.bat with VDM sound and there were credits, then an introductory movie played, and I was swept into the waxsworks without a by-your-leave. Didn't even have to press 'enter' :w00t:
The ones that aren't working perhaps aren't using dos, or a dos emulation or have done something deviant along the way. *evil laugh* Well,, ok, just trying to get into the Halloween spirit. Btw, it's just after midnight here, and I'm totally alone. :eeeeeh: :whistle:

this is a very difficult game... i remember playing it several years ago, i bought it with an walkthroug (those days almost anyone had internet) and even so i was scared like hell and didn't managed to finish the game (it can get pretty difficult). i think i've only managed to solve the Egyptian waxwork :o

You can only drop those item that need to be dropped - at a particular place. There aren't all to many things you need to collect, so it's better to carry everything the to have to return for some items later on. Once you finish a waxwork the items will disapeare.

About the combination of tiles... if you smashed the mural you'll just have to rough it - try all the combinations (there are 32 of them - it's not too many).

The link which leads to shop seems to be dead. But I think it´s still sold.

EDIT:Otherwise you should host Elvira and Elvira2 as well...

Well, unfortunately I haven't finished mapping the London Waxworks (the other three are in the incomplete walkthrough and maps). The walkthrough that was available on the net is somewhat incomplete, that's why I'm writting a new one (but as you can see it's not inished yet). I'll hurry though and post it when it's finished - but to answer your question: there should be only one dock area (where the inn is).

Do you know how to set up DOSBox?

After installing dosbox, downloading and extracting the game, follow these simple steps:

1. Move the game folder to drive C: (in this case there should now be a folder C:\waxworks)
2. Run DOSBox
3. TYPE: mount c: c: (press enter)
4. TYPE: cd c: (press enter)
5. TYPE: wax (press enter)

Play the game and enjoy!

Technical note:
The game has been cracked, but it is possible that you may need to crack it again (the crack file is included). It seems the crack doesn't work well if you run setup.exe first, so don't run that file!

It's answered in the review - and in some of the previous posts.

I first played Waxworks when it was new, I was not very old at the time. The raw, brutal deathscenes disgusted me so much that I couldn't go on playing it. I ended up hating the game because it was so difficult and I kept dying.

After that I kept thinking about the game every now and then because it had left such a strong impression on me. Many years later I read the review on Underdogs and got interested again, partly because it was said to be inspired by Lovecraft. I bought a copy of the HorrorSoft HorrorPack (got it from AdventureSoft's website, dunno if it's still around, Elvira 1, 2 and Waxworks are included) and played the game again. This time around I thought it was great, it was still very difficult and I had to use a walkthrough several times, but the fantastic graphics and the brilliant horrifying atmosphere really affected me, this time in a good way.

Worst part of the game are the incredibly annoying flaws when it comes to puzzle design. It's very easy to get stuck because, for example, you accidently press a button or hit something you shouldn't have. However it's still one of my favourite games and I can think of no other game that's as intense as this in terms of sheer brutal horror.

Try the new game Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. Although not as frightening, it's quite similiar to this in a some ways. I'm guessing because Mike & Simon Woodroffe (of HorrorSoft/AdventureSoft) helped make it.

I offered the moderators of this site Elvira 1&2 cracked with manuals a few months ago, but never heard back from them - yes it was supposedly still sold, but as has been said, the shop has been dead for quite some time. Also since the games no longer work under WinXP and haven't been upgraded accordingly, I find it cheeky to ask money for a game that's unplayable on anything but 10 year old computers.

About the Oldwarez list...
The Accolade company is on the list, yet ESA never contacted us regarding any of their games (and Horrorsoft is not a part of ESA).
So both of this companies are considered border-line cases (so we're not too enthusiastic about adding their games).
Horrorsoft may be connected with Adventuresoft and Accolade may be ESA protected. If it turns out the game is either ESA protected or sold by the copyright owner, then it will be removed (naturally).

OK - finally I got the answer for you!

When you reach the docks (where the Inn is and everything) go east. Turn north and take the first street east - the first a door on your right side isn't locked. Click on it to open and go through the warehouse to the pier. You'll find the plank there!

The full walkthrough and the complete maps should be up soon (Finally finished doublechecking everything, just need to arrange my final notes and it's going to be posted).

I played this game a long time ago and it rocks!

Atmosphere is great, maybe it's too difficult and gets a bit flustrating when you can die on every corner (on the other side - remember Orion Conspiracy - horror adventure game about alien-infested space station? you couldn't die there no matter how hard you tried, and that IMHO literally killed the atmosphere), but still a great horror game.

I managed only to finish the 'mine accident' part, now I'll play it again and finish the whole damn game :)!

@Guest: When you enter that warehouse (it's full of crates) take one step west and then one step south. It should be one of the bottom crates (I'm, not sure if it's always on the same location).

@Mike_fields: Just press the sword icon. The weapon is a sword hidden in the cane you picked up in the pawn shop. You don't need to select it, just click the SWORD icon.

:help: The controls are giving me some problems - in the Pyramid level 3, how do I put the sand in the hanging jar? If I select the sand or the jar it just gives me the "examine" option.
Also, is combat just a matter of clicking fast enough on the right part of the enemy or is there something else you can do - like blocking enemy strikes or something?

Well I've been able to block some hits, but that was only agains Jack the Ripper - in the pyramid I wasn't able to block, but if you're fast enough with the first blow (especially after using the spear as the weapon) you shouldn't have many problems (two hits are usually enough).

About the sand... Just drag the sand to the jar (click on it and release the button - place the hand icon over the jar and then release the mouse button).

Thanks for the maps Sebastianos. It's poor game design to me when someone has to take the time to painstakingly make out maps just so you can find your way through the game. :wall: I don't want to have to do tedious work to be able to enjoy a game. Thank goodness this method of game design is no longer with us. Pretty fun game otherwise...

You must NOT INSTALL the game. Just delete it, download it again (unzip/extract) and play - don't try to set it up!

There is some nudity,but I doubt thait anyone would find maimed corpses with exposed breasts appealing..

I had the same problem as Ivo and wally- I got to the keypad and then couldn't go any further. The game gives you three chances (a different code each time, though) and kicks you out after the 3rd time. I tried what you suggest, deleting the folder and extracting again, but the problem still reoccured with the new folder.

I finally solved the problem: appparently if you hit the 'setup' OR 'install', it PERMANENTLY screws up the file. Delete the WHOLE thing and download it anew. The new one should work fine.

So, to ammend Sebastianos' instructions:
When the guy asks for your ticket, hit 'enter'. You will get a keypad asking to type a number from the manual. Below the keypad are 3 symbols. Hit 'enter' a second time. If the file is ok, the manservant reappears, leading you into the game. If nothing happens when you hit 'enter', you need to delete BOTH the folder and your downloaded file and re-download it. Just extract the files to your h.d. in whatever directory you want it to be in. Then run DosBox or whatever normally

Hope this helps..

I think I discovered a bug in the Amiga version,. In London exhibit I can´t show the landlord at ship´s inn the letter about his tea, I have told him I were looking for Molly but he denies knowing her, when I talk to him again and call him a liar I just get one dialoge option "I guess I´ll have to go look for her myself" I got the letter though and the key to the warehouse, I have even tried going back to the lawyer´s firm and search the room but found nothing. Can anyone help me out?

Ok I found out how the crack works even after using setup.exe to get your desired sound settings working.

SETUP rewrites wax.bat and thus deletes the entry "WAX_MSI.COM" (which is the crack file). You have to put this entry back into the batch file for the crack to work. Just put it one line above the RUNVGA entry in the batch file and it should work. A sample batch file is here:

Echo off
WAX_MSI.COM
runvga gamepc /4 /3
Echo on

Alternatively you can edit your wax.bat and change the runvga entry to what is shown above. This should start Waxworks in Roland / Soundblaster mode.

Here's the solution for the floor tile puzzle in the 4th or 5th floor of the pyramid since in the walktrough you said you couldnt work it out and guessing the right tile can be frustrating. In the very first room of the pyramid (the one with the corpse on the table - dagger sticking out of his back) collect the papyrus that is under that guys head. On it you will find the symbols of death which you need at the floor tiles. Each row of the floor tiles all but one tile show symbols of death.... so just step on the symbol that is not on the shown on the papyrus (hence the symbol of life)

I already owned the first two (on the original disks, weee!) but it was just too expensive for that one game. Otherwise it seems damn hard to find it! Ebay has one very expensive copy of the game but I'm not paying $80 for one single game which might not even survive the mail.

I bought the triple pack (Elvira 1, 2 & Waxworks) - comes in a big box with one CD in a plastic sleeve and two copied pages with spells. A bit disappointing - the manual is on the CD but is limited. Ah well.

The walkthrough isn't as big of a deal as the maps! I really had problems before I maped everything out (especially the foggy London).

this is a very difficult game... i remember playing it several years ago, i bought it with an walkthroug (those days almost anyone had internet) and even so i was scared like hell and didn't managed to finish the game (it can get pretty difficult). i think i've only managed to solve the Egyptian waxwork :o
