If you like this game you should definitely play the online game Arcane by Sarbakan. they are both based on Lovecraft's works.
You can find it herehttp://www.arcanegame.com

Sorry, after reading the (otherwise great) review, I'm a little confused about one thing:
Is there a version with speech, or not?
If so, any chance of a voice addon being uploaded to the site eventually? I already have Shadow of the Comet (floppy), but I find that speech always adds much more atmosphere to adventure games.

I agree
I don't have much time either.
I gave the game a try but soon became bored of it the lack of sound is usually not annoying. But this game... I don't know, it really bothered me here.
and next to homework and tests I still have to finish loads of other games I bought, like:
Red Alert 1 (not new, but I am playing it)
Doom 3 (final levels)
Ground Control 2 (should finish this... but its a bit boring now)
Myst 4 (ehm... I think I'll wait for a walkthrough to come out ;) )
Farcry (brother finally returned it to me... should play it one day)
Syberia 2 (bought it, reached the end, lost all savegame, uninstalled... now I need to start all over)
Beyond Good & Evil (reached the ending but couldn't defeat the final boss since i had forgotten to buy/find all +1 life potions. Had to defeat the boss with 7 lives instead of the required 12... which obviously didn't work)
See this is what happens when I get depressed.
My usual miserly character changes into that...
7 games
all worth about 50 euros
350 euros spent in a short time...
I eventually took all my money I had at home to the bank so I would stop buying games.

Press 'd' for disk options and there you'll find load and save options.
With 'Tab' you can see and choose commands.

I've just finished downloading the CD version of Shadow of the Comet, and I must say I'm impressed. It has an extended intro sequence, full speech thats acted well, added sound effects and a mouse interface. The mouse interface is a bit basic but its a nice alternative to using the keys. I have it zipped up at around 80MB but I had to use Dosbox to get it to run so you might find it a little complicated to get running (you may have to burn the zip to a CD, since all I did was zip up everything that was there). If anyone wants to host this let me know and I'll be happy to upload it, but I cant afford to share it more than once.
Edit - Oh, it also comes with a interactive Lovecraft museum which you walk around just like in the actual game.

Use chemicals: Metol, Hydroguinone, Benzine Chlorate(wich is Sodium Hyposulphite) and Chromogenous(wich is Potash Metabisulfite)
I never understood why in every walkthrough for Shadow of the Comet they use other names for last two chemicals. Actually, Parker calls them that way, but in inventory they are named different.
I send my own walkthrough with these corrections (you see it above :D ) but I guess Kosta wanted to write his own.

Hey gang, I just did a search to find the post about the cd version and I came up empty handed. Would anyone mind pointing me in the right direction because I loved this game and think it would be swell to have the talkie version (plus who can go wrong with mouse support :P).
Thanks a bunch. :)
EDIT-Scratch that I found it on a site. Hopefully 1)It works properly and 2)Firefox's resume function will cooperate with it since it's 94.9mb and I'm on 56k. ;)

Sorry for the double post but I need a bit of assistance. I ended up getting the download but I seem to have run into a problem when it comes to sound. I burned the iso that came in the installer and then ran the installer. Only two files installed to the directory so I tried hand copying the others that I thought were important. Then the game kept crashing. I fiddled with the .config file so now I have the game working but there's no sound (which completely ruins the whole point of me getting the cd version since I already have the non-talkie). I didn't want to link to the site because I didn't want to get in trouble but I don't really know how else to explain what happens than to have you guys check it out. You'll find it here. (http://staregry.gry-online.pl/index.php?akcja=odczyt&id=Shadow+of+the+Comet+CD)
EDIT-Just wanted to make it clear that I have tried running it through DOSbox and VDM sound. The update is I can *sometimes* get the sound to work but it's really jerky in DOSbox and if I put anything other than the music on in VDM sound it runs incredibly slow. :eeeeeh:

Im running this game (floppy version) on an old Dos machine and its great, but I have just gone down into the cemetary and met Jonas and I cant get the statues or talk to him I just say "But Im innocent" and die! I have tried everything, read the walkthroughs all to no avail. Please, please, please can someone give me any idea where Ive gone wrong or what i should do? I really dont want this game to end here!

I went back to a save game before the cemetry and re-did it, think I must of walked on one of those panels twice or something first time round, as that is the only thing I seemed to do differently, anyway I am on to day 3 now, must get back to it :D

I'm running the CD version of the game in DosBox 0.63 (which up until now has run the game perfectly), but have run into a prolbem. I'm on Day 2, in Arlington's office, trying to get the diary out of the safe, but even though I dial in 3-4-5, nothing happens! The hourglass figure still remains, indicating that it's still cogitating and not recognizing that I've put in the number.
I've tried slowing down the game's speed in the Options menu, but to no avail. Does anybody have any ideas how to get around this? Failing that, can anybody post a save game just after getting the safe open so I can continue with this excellent adventure!
Thanks.

Okay, I'm in another pickle and nothing I do seems to change the problem. I'm in the crypt, ready to move into the chamber that contains Jonas, but when I go through the portal I end up falling down and dying. I can't find any way to get around this, as the cut scene happens the minute I move through. Obviously, I didn't set something up right.
I've gone back to that room that has the 9 squares you have to step on to make sure I only stepped on each one once, and of course went around the table three times to get the gate to open. So I'm ready to make my entrance, I see the statues and Jonas down there, but then that's all she wrote. I'm stumped! :wall:
Ideas?
Thanks!

Shadow of the Comet is really a great game. I enjoyed it so much when i played, especially for the atmosphere (i think Prisoner of Ice, another game from Chtulu series, is good too, but it doesn't have the same "appeal" of this)

Post the site Horseman, other abandonware sites are fine provided they host no warez (ie, games that are still for sale/protected and they don't have permission for). Adverts are obviously not allowed but this isn't one.
The Fifth Horseman
19-12-2005, 05:33 PM
What I've posted and what later was removed by Sebatianos read:
removed again
..., I doubt they'd put an ESA-protected game like that one without getting a permission. I really doubt.
EDIT: But you guess wrong - they don't have permision (and you know who they are). It's their policy that they explained in the conversation between a very destinguished member of our site and the founder of theirs. They put it us as warez, hoping ESA wouldn't care.

I'm not quite sure what you mean.
Do you want to download the version hosted on this site? Then I must disappoint you, because it is ESA protected, meaning that you are not allowed to download the game.
If you mean something else, like a tool to do something with CDs, then I must disappoint you again because I don't know where or what to look for.

Did you try the Compatibility Modes (Properties window, Compatiobility tab)?
Hello! I just started playing this game and came to the point (as it often happens) when
I don't know what to do anymore. So I turned to the solution and it said:
(G) some absorbent cotton and the alcohol out of the drawer.
Use them (U) to make a piece of cotton soaked in alcohol
(this clue is given in Captain Robin's statement, see documents in the box)
It's pretty clear what I have to do, but I just can't find the damn box with the documents
mentioned! :-( Could you please tell me where it is? Because I want to understand what
I am doing and why, not just follow the instructions and get the ending sequence..

What files does it install, exactly? Also, does it display any error messages during the installation or after it?

I have the same problem. I've got the original CD (bought long ago) but I cannot install it. I tried the Dosbox (I already played games with Dosbox without any problem) but it tells me "Installation path must be C:/I-Motion/Shadow.CD and it exits. I also tried to install it normally but the installation screen has weird simbols instead of letters.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

Please tell me what are your configured mounts, what commands you have entered and where the Shadow.CD directory is present on your actual HDD.
I'll try to figure out what went wrong and help you if possible.

First, I tried to install it as you would do regullarly with any game. But the installation screen didn't show the proper words but incomprehensible simbols. No matter what I do there, it always ends up exiting.
Then I tried to use Dosbox. I've followed the instructions from Abandonia.com ("Download and Installation of Games"). I've created a subfolder inside the CDrive folder. The game files were not zipped (it's the original CD game) so I copied and pasted the CD content into this subfolder. Then, the usual: dir - cd shadow (or cd i-motion) - dir - install. A screen pops up with the text "Installation path must be: C:\I-MOTION\SHADOW.CD".
I don't know where this "Shadow.CD" could be. I don't think it's talking about the actual Compact Disk.

Delete that folder where you copied your cd files.
Run dosbox, mount your C,
and as extra input:
mount d x:\ -t cd rom
d:
install
This extra line will mount your CD.
The x is your real cddrive letter in windows.
Mount the cd everytime you wanna play.
Or make an ISO of it and mount that as D

Delete that folder where you copied your cd files.
Run dosbox, mount your C,
and as extra input:
mount d x:\ -t cd rom
d:
install
This extra line will mount your CD.
The x is your real cddrive letter in windows.
Mount the cd everytime you wanna play.
Or make an ISO of it and mount that as D

Thanks, dosraider! I'll do that.

Great, dosraider! It worked perfectly. I'm a moron. All I had to do was to run the install.exe and the shadow.exe from the D drive (CD) instead the C drive. Thanks!!
:(Can anyone give me a clue about controls on Cof C..I have P for pause

Sal, I can check the manual when i get home tonight.
I would love to use the mouse 5th horseman but I downloaded the game from Abandonia and this doesn't seem to support mouse use. I think I have figured out all the keyboard controls and was getting on with the game really well but "saved" games apparently don't "save"..Any help suggestions gratefully received.:)
JMB just saw your reply...many thanks

JMB, the walkthrough for this seems to have got lost somehow. Did you contribute it, if so do you still keep it? If so please upload it again so I can restore it.
I've sent a Pm to marko_river who submitted the walkthrough.

Great game. On of the first adventures I'd seen, in my cousin's computer. I played the floppy version years later; loved the graphics, loved the ...errr minimalistic sound. But the interface - God! Worse than Grim Fandago :)

If you are playing via the keyboard ...
1. Pressing TAB brings up the Icon Bar (you can then use the arrow keys to select the icon you want and press ENTER.
2. Keyboard shortcuts are ...
a. "T" to talk
b. "G" to get and item
c. "U" to use an item
d. "L" to look at either the environment (search) or to inspect an object
e. "O" to look at inventory objects
f. "I" to look at notebook (use the arrow keys to page through journal)
g. "ESC" to close the notebook or skip dialogue
h. "M" to use the map (use the arrow keys to select a destination)
i. "D" to bring up the Tools Menu (save/restore, control panel, exit etc)
j. "S" to save a game (shortcut)
k. "L" to load a game (shortcut)
l. "T" to bring up the Control Panel (shortcut)
m. "X" to exit game (shortcut)
n. "P" to pause/resume
Maybe this weekend I will have time to do some scanning. There are a lot of documents (letters etc that come in an envelope addressed to Mr Cestrade, Scotland Yard) with the game that look like they might be needed to play the game. Copy protection perhaps.

How did you guys manage to install the game? I have the CD version and I ran the installer from a mounted CD-drive. I have a Vista and am using Dosbox. I select the language and choose the install button from the menu. But then, the installing menu is distorted, there is no text visible. When I press the arrow keys, the text in the gray background at the bottom of the screen will change. But there's no way to manipulate the destination in which I want to install the game. Here's a pic of the view:
http://img4.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cometinstalllc1.jpg
I tried to manually copy the contents of the CD to a folder in my drive. Before I can play, I'm told that the game has to be installed first. Now when I run the install.exe, there will again be a menu with no text visible. Did anyone here experience similar struggles?
Hi There Guest....I downloaded my copy of the game from the Abandonia site and it is the floppy disk version (no mouse ) I simply copied the game to Dos Box 0.72 extracted the files scrolled down to Tatou exe. click on that and the game starts..I had a few probs with saving games initially but once I got that sorted the game plays really well I love it. There are some great people at Abandonia who can help you good luck with the game:)

Thanks, but the CD version is apparently a whole different animal in terms of making it work. Now I have a slight progress to report. I had all the game files on a folder on my hard drive. Then I held the CTRL button and dragged the install.exe on top of my Dosbox shortcut. That is an alternative way to start a program that requires the DOS environment. Now the text became readable. There's a single blue window that notifies me that "Installation path must be C:\infogram\shadow.cd".
This is a matter of mounting the drives in the right way. Previously when I ran the installer from the virtual cd-drive, different menus popped up. Next I tried to drag the installer.exe from virtual drive to the Dosbox icon. It didn't function. When you jumpstart the Dosbox with this method, things get jumbled.
H is the letter of my virtual drive. Dosbox tried to execute this line:
"mount C H:"
"Directory H: doesn't exist" is the result. I wonder why Dosbox doesn't recognize the virtual drive H. I have it mounted in the config file thusly:
mount h h:\ -t cdrom
And about the installation path that should be "C:\infogram\shadow.cd". I created a structure like that complete with a "shadow.cd" subfolder. And ran the installer from there. Still no luck. I guess there's a way solve this, I haven't been able to do it.

The drag & drop is not a recommended way of running games. It works, but isn't always reliable.
"mount C H:"

mount C H:\
And you're forgetting you need to mount somewhere you can install it to.
Create a directory for your DOS games somewhere and mount THAT as the C drive in DOSbox.
I have it mounted in the config file thusly:
mount h h:\ -t cdrom
First, always mount drives using successive letters of the alphabet, starting with C. So you'd actually mount this as D
But you're saying you run it from a virtual drive, ie you have an image of the CD. Use IMGMOUNT to mount the image as a drive in DOSbox (read up on that in the DOSBox readme file, there are a few things that make doing it for the first time somewhat difficult)

Jesus hotrodding Christ, now it's working! Thanks man. Using the Dosbox's internal IMGMOUNT command was the key. Since otherwise there was a conflict, as the system didn't regard a Daemon Tools -mounted drive as a proper drive. Before I haven't had much success in tinkering with these CD settings.

Hi, i seem to be stuck.
I'm at the mayors office. I opened the safe. Took diary and cigar case. Read diary and put it back. Opened cigar case and got the deposit note. Read it. Then i went to the post office - but the lady won't talk to me! I tried using deposit note on her, talking, pressing keys while standing a bit further - it didn't work.
I was thinking, maybe i am supposed to close the cigar case and put it back into safe? It didn't work as well...
Any ideas?
Hi Jasiu... Just a hint I usually find that if something doen't work it's because I have forgotten to do something before go back over the previous section and check that you have 1.read the message 2.gone to PO and spoken to Mrs Gilcrest.3 Spoken to Mr.Underhouse etc. There is a walkthrough available if you feel like using it. :)

Any clues on how to fix this?

1. Are you using DOSBox?
2. Did you mess with the configuration? When starting the game you can choose the audio device and so on (example: Sound Blaster, Adlib)

I don't know if anyone here can help me, but I've consulted every walkthrough I can find for the game and none of them are assisting me.
My problem is that I cannot get the third branch in the forest. I've walked all over the place trying to figure out how to get to it but no matter what I try I just keep going around in circles.
I can see it on two screens but neither of them lets me get to that elusive branch.
Can anyone tell me what I need to do to get to it?
Its a while since I played this game but I remember having a similar problem..I seem to recall that I eventually found the last branch not actually in the woods but just on the path into the woods..Sorry I can't be of more help.

I eventually found a video playthrough and it seems that the one in the "middle" of the forest isn't actually grab-able. A red herring I suppose. The thing that is royally confusing is that each room of the forest seems to have a mirror opposite. I eventually found the other "entrance" to the Forest and got my third branch, but it certainly was not easy.
Time to meet up with my guide now.

You're trying to run a DOS game in a virtual machine running Windows. I can't really see anything in particular that could be wrong with that... apart from the whole idea.
I asked you what is happening in DOSBox, because that's your best bet at running this game. Now, if you want help, would you kindly answer the questions?

It seems my DosBox screws up at some point. I have 2 different installations of the game (this one and my own, although it is installed from a CD it still has just the floppy elements, heaven knows why...) and both create problems when changing from day to night on day one.
Leaving the house works, although the lower quarter of the screen is a bit messed up (moved to the left, edges with mostly white and purple pixels) moving to the next area (I am not a friend of the map) crashes the game entirely - it looks a bit like static on my analog TV set, just with more colors. Some pixels are red, some green, blacks and whites, purple, blue etc
I have been trying to mess around a bit in the DOSBox Conf-File changing settings on memory usage, graphics emulation and emm, and tried to alter the cycles, but the error occurs everytime.
I'd be glad if someone had any idea where the problem might be and how it maybe coult be avoided. First dai for by now 18 times is daaaamned boring.
Seeing as i remembered my username and password ^^
first, the above is my post, second, missing info...

Hey guys,
I recently was doing some cleaning in my house and found my old games collection, with Shadow of the Comet CD version among them.
So, I decided to make a copy in case the original imploded and I am currently playing it. I remember it being awesome and nothing has changed. To me, SotC is one of the best adventure games ever.
I have one problem with it, though. I have both text and voice activated, and the text lasts too long. By the time a character has finished speaking, in most cases, the first dialogue is still being displayed. There is an option to accelerate the text, but that accelerates the whole game, and trying to compensate it by decreasing cycles is the same as if I had done nothing.
Any ideas, guys?
