Specialising in "advertisement games", The Art Department was founded in 1992 by some of the members of then already defunct Starbyte (known for Hannibal and SpaceMAX). The studio created mostly promotional casual games for their partners, targeting especially the german-speaking population. Their last project under the "Art Department" name was Moorhuhn, who later became a longstanding and popular franchise, both in Germany and the entire world.

In 1999 they were acquired by Phenomedia AG (from 2004 - Phenomedia Publishing gmbh) making together tens of titles featuring funny characters like the crazy chicken from Moorhuhn or the amourous sheep Sven.
