Poor, poor Shang Tsung. Liu Kang kicked his butt in the last game, and now the old sorceror faces execution at the hands of the emperor of Outworld, Shao Kahn -- not only for losing the tournament, but for the death of Goro as well. But Shang Tsung is known to be sneaky, for he convinces his master of a new plan: To lure the Earth warriors into a new Outworld tournament, where they'll meet their certain doom at the hands of Kahn and his dark minions. The emperor likes this plan, so he restores Shang Tsung's youth and sends him to force the Earth warriors into kombat in the Outworld!

Whereas the first game felt uninspired and wooden, Mortal Kombat II was a truly solid successor. Everything was improved: The graphics, the sound, the gameplay, and the blood were all doubled in quality. The MS-DOS version does its best to deliver the arcade experience to your personal computer in a satisfying way.

This time, there're twelve fighters, some new faces and some returning favorites. Once you pick your character, you must battle your way through all the other fighters, including yourself. Once they're defeated, you must duel the shape-shifting demon Shang Tsung, then Kintaro (Goro's tiger-like successor), and then, finally, Shao Kahn. Defeat Kahn and the game is won! There's also three secret characters for you to locate and fight, but be prepared for a whoopin' if you can reach them...

The graphics are degraded again, but still excellent. The sound is crispy, but the music is in MIDI format. The gameplay is fast-paced and very responsive; all the moves and fatalities can be done with the keyboard really easily. Also, since this is the CD-based version of the game, errors with the floppy version have been fixed, such as the buy-in continue screen working correctly in DOSBox.

Mortal Kombat II is widely regarded as the best game of the entire series, and the DOS version doesn't disappoint. If you've never played Mortal Kombat before and are wondering what it's like, this is the perfect first step into a new world...
