I know someone else with the same problem. That was caused after installing sp2... Before sp2 everything worked well.

try selecting the option "install new hardware device manually" or "select drivers
for new hardware manually" (i don't know exactly what the english text for this option is, because i'm using the german one). afterwards, in the driver selection window, choose "browse for file" and select the location where you have saved the drivers for your scanner. then it should be detected properly. at least that's how i got my scanner running... |

it's rather odd that it didn't apply a generic driver for it. XP comes with a healthy serving of them...weird
it may mean absolutely nothing, but i too have an HP scanner and if i remember correctly, there were special circumstances to avoid. With many of their scanners, they would conflict with HP printers also installed on the machine. I read that you got the latest drivers for it, but did you try the old ones by any chance? Also, have you tried leaving it plugged in and doing a windows update? They will also search for new drivers for you automatically. |

i tried the old drivers before but no luck and i just tried getting an update for it through windows update but it didn't detect an update
and as for those special circumstances, what were they and how did you get round them?

all i can remember is that my scanjet 5100c wouldn't agree with some other HP printers. Do you have an HP printer hooked up? if so, unplug it and give it a try.
Also, if it also has an lpt port, try also getting it out of USB and into printer port to see if it works that way |
