When I was young, I liked playing in sand and digging holes. Now when I look back on my life, I realize that I also really enjoyed playing video games that focused on digging. Like, “Dungeon Keeper” for example. Maybe I was a dwarf in my past life? :P

Diggers is a strategy game where you control five diggers that dig around the landscape and look for treasure. It’s similar to the game “Lemmings”. Your little friends are not regular miners, though. There are four different clans of miners that you can choose from. Every clan has its weaknesses and strengths. One may have a large amount of health, but are slow diggers. Another clan may be fast, but are weak in fighting, and so on. My favorite is the Habbish. They look a bit like Grim Reapers, but they make for excellent miners. There are 30+ missions, or levels, that you must complete to finish the game.

You select your diggers by left-clicking on them. Right-clicking the mouse will open a menu of commands for you to choose from. Your diggers can move, dig, collect, drop, and return to base. It might take you a little time to get used to the controls, because you’ll have to do everything with your mouse, but you’ll get used to it quickly.

There are brown, blue, green, yellow, and purple colored treasures that you can sell to the bank to make a profit. The purple treasure is rare and the most valuable of them all, so be sure to keep an eye out for them. With your profits you can buy various gadgets like bridges, explosives, lifts, medical kits, and others to help you in your goal. You can also buy a large tunneling device, which is a very nice piece of machinery indeed. :)

Your goal is to reach a certain amount of profit in each level, and to do it before your opponent. Yes, you are competing against a computer-controlled enemy. When your diggers encounter the AI, it’s one Hell of a party. Your beloved diggers can perish by falling from tall heights, drowning in water, being killed by rival clans, and the special enemies that dwell in the deeps. If you lose all five of your diggers, then it’s game over.

Diggers refresh their health by sleeping, which is automatic. The gameplay is the same in all of the missions, except that you play for different amounts of cash, against different clans, and on different landscapes. You probably think that this would get boring after a while, but it doesn’t. Not for me, anyway. Every mission is a different story and the developers put a lot of Easter eggs in the game that are very challenging to find.

The graphics have a goofy cartoonish look to them and are very nicely done. Sounds are sparse and rather unimpressive, consisting of indecipherable gibbering, various mining sounds, ect. The music isn’t too bad, but it’s definitely not Mozart material. Overall I was left quite satisfied with the graphics and artwork, but wished there were more sound effects and perhaps in-game music.

It’s a great game and it deserves your time and attention, 5 is my mark.

Dig into this gem! :D
